A delightful listen
Revisado: 03-10-23
I have long since learned that I should always just read novels by KJ Charles regardless of the summery; somehow the plot always steps elegantly around my pet peeve pitfalls!
The atmosphere is sublime, the world just feels very textural to me; the excellent narration definitely supports this. Both the language and local flair feel authentic. It is just a delight to be immersed in a world with people very different from me yet recognisable.
Aside from world building and characters, the story is interesting and engaging. It moves fast and stays interesting without spinning out of control.
I loved this book and can't wait for the sequel (the plot of which I am already speculating about)

Historia
Declan has commitment issues. He’s been an office temp for literally years now, and his friends delight in telling people that he left his last boyfriend at the altar. And that’s all true. But he’s starting to think that maybe it’s time to start working on his issues. When Declan meets Sidney - a popular nonbinary YouTuber with an advice show - an opportunity presents itself: as part of The Love Study, Declan will go on a series of dates arranged by Sidney and report back on how the date went in the next episode. The dates are…sort of blah.

Wonderfully awkward, cute and heartwarming
Revisado: 04-22-21
I love stories about finding the right person / relationship after realising more conventional romance doesn't fit. I like how these two are awkward with each other while still respectful and how that helps them move forward together.
It was the kind of book I listened to with a constant smile on my face and it feels like a book I will return to for comfort listening. I already bought the second book and am looking forward to follow this group of people.
Also I can't believe it took me this long to notice Kris Ripper finally got a book on Audible! ...can I have The Scientific Method on Audible too then, pretty please?

Everything has changed. Everything but the man he’s never stopped wanting.

Atmospheric, magical and compelling!
Revisado: 01-04-20
This felt like getting wrapped up in a big comfortable duvet.
I was expecting more of a romance (possibly because I had it in my library for a bit before reading an mostly bought based on author anyway) but I really liked everything seemed kind of magically easy. Like the result was never really up for debate, everyone just had to get ready to go there. Writing that makes it sound a bit dull, but it really isn't.
I loved all the characters and I laughed and cried. I finished this book feeling happy and content, which is rare as endings often disapoint me a bit.

Too many plotlines none of which felt developed
Revisado: 02-06-18
What aspect of Joe DiNozzi’s performance would you have changed?
There were some really strange places where his voice was multiplied trying to make him sound like more people speaking at once, that really threw me out of the mood.
All in all the performance was okay, but not a favorite - but then I don’t really think he had the best material to work with.
Any additional comments?
I found this as part of my romance package, so I was expecting romance, which might have affected my experience adding to my disappointment. I was expecting the main character to enter a relationship but that never really happened.
This story turned out to be more of a starting college stream of consciousness thing, but even as such I was not really impressed. There were far too many themes for such a short story, I never really managed to get invested in any of the storylines. I have a feeling this is not the first story in this series, and perhaps it would help if I already knew this world and the characters, but as is it was a strangely uninteresting experience.
I am also baffled by the choice to have so many characters share names, that seems very odd and helped confuse me a few times.
All in all I didn’t really care about any of the characters and listening to this left me feeling distinctly meh.

I listened to this because I really liked the Men Under the Mistletoe collection. I would recommend this one too, but I prefered the stories of that other collection.
I don’t think I have a particular favorite this time around, all 4 stories were decent.

Loneliness. A concept with which Raphael Laurent is very familiar. He's lived a solitary life for 36 years, shunning the excesses of the local vampire clan - until he spots Lord Aleric Vane, the handsome and dissolute third son of a duke. For three years Raphael has watched from a distance, for only when he is near Aleric does the hollow, empty ache in his chest ease.

A nice little story, but for some reason it left me feeling like there was a lot left out that I would have liked to learned.
Sometimes a little snapshot of a story works well, but this time it did kind of leave me a little disappointed.
I liked the characters and would have loved to get to know them better.

Great collection, especially loved Winter Knights
Revisado: 01-26-18
Any additional comments?
I’m surprised how much I liked these 4 stories. Since the description was rather thin I went into this just figuring I’d give it a go hoping 1 or 2 of the stories would be okay, but I really liked them all.
The weakest for me personally was most definitely the first one. I found it hard to get into the story and to be honest I did skip like half an hour or so. But then it picked up and was okay, though still my least favorite.
To me the most intriguing story was Winter Knights by Harper Fox. It had a lovely mix of very real and somewhat magical. This story on it’s own might well have gotten 5 stars from me. I’m definitely going to check out a few other Harper Fox stories after listening to this one.
Lone Star and The Christmas Proposition where both lovely kind of low key stories. I like these kind of stories everything does not have to be pumped up to the max all the time. Both had strengths and weaknesses, but I will definitely be looking at more stories by these authors too.

"And you want me to sleep with him? Are you out of your freaking mind? I'm not gay, you know." "Yeah I know. All you gotta do is pretend to be gay. Since he already likes you, you can get in close to him and see what's going on back there." He held up a hand. "In the back room I mean," he said quickly when I opened my mouth to protest. "Look, all reports say that he's doing something illegal. There's no way in hell that he's made all that money clean."

A bit of a mess
Revisado: 01-26-18
Any additional comments?
Given the description I was kind of just expecting some smut, sadly it was wrapped in a thin and to me completely unbelievable love story spiced up with some completely unbelievable cop investigation thrown in. This short story seemed to want to be about 5 different things at once, and as a result delivered on nothing.
The conflicts seemed forced and unbelievable, I never really understood the reactions from any of the characters.
I feel there could have been an interesting story if the whole cop plot was let go. Focusing on a man discovering new sides of himself under the attention of the owner of a club might have had some potential.

Nice road trip story
Revisado: 01-25-18
Any additional comments?
I was very pleased with the second installment in the focus series. This time I was much more connected with the main characters.
It was interesting how this road trip kind of organically developed rather than being planned.
And I’m not sure if the narrator improved or if I just got used to his style, either way I was pretty satisfied with the narration this time around.
