Historia
After facing war, death, unruly gods, and unmitigated evil, Minalan the Spellmonger is forced to return to Farise, the site of his earliest battles, with the simple assignment to conquer the subtropical city-state and expel the pirates that plague the kingdom’s shipping. Tired of warfare, Minalan embarks on a clandestine campaign to do so, assuming an alias and setting up shop in Farise as a mere Practical Adept as cover for his operation. Recruiting a cadre of talented agents to assist, he reluctantly begins the task of infiltrating and observing Farisian society.

No cherry here 🍒
Revisado: 10-18-24
I've been listening to much of Terry Mancour's work and the Spellmonger series. I enjoyed them until this latest book. My impression is that it feels like 'filler.' There's no true antagonist. No enemy. Nothing to defeat but Minilan's insecurities in this latest installment. The book is well performed and interestingly paced,...but lacks conflict(s.) No undead evil. No ancient creatures from the deep. No enemy hordes. No dangerous dragons. Not even pirate battles at sea. It was basically a 'nothing burger.' There was lettuce, tomato and condiment,...but no beef patty. All we really get is a history lesson of Minilan's time in Farese and introduction to the islands political sphere. (sighs)

Historia
Killing the sadistic warlord known as the Dog Tongue took everything Gus Berry had, including the woman he loved. Now, all he wants is to get away from the bloody scene of their final showdown. But when he heads west in a stolen truck, a brutal snowstorm forces him to turn back—and seek refuge in the Dog Tongue’s former headquarters. Though it’s littered with human carnage, the abandoned luxury hotel has a lot to offer a guy like Gus. But in addition to soft beds and working toilets, he encounters still-lurking dangers both living and undead.

Exited stage left and the audience sighed.
Revisado: 08-16-23
I've listened to this series several times and really enjoyed the character arcs and plot evolution . Book 7 on the other hand really dropped the ball. I was hoping for more creativity from Blackmore. The virus putters out. The dead are kaput. Road savages are minimal. Our main protagonist spins in circles for several chapters and there's no plot development for the audience. Gus fades into the distance like the High Plains Drifter. This sequel feels like the author is waving bye bye to his core audience.

That's it,..really??
Revisado: 03-16-23
From my perspective, when an author nears the end of a series then begins drifting into parallel universes and time shifting, you know they've run out of material. Bartlett seems to have forgotten the Vlad the Impaler alternative to fighting monsters as he neared the end. Often the only thing monsters fear are greater monsters than they. Evil is never diverted from its destructive path by moral authority, Often its simply the act of stomping down on it HARD that does the job. Alternative multiverse, alpha omega b.s. is just,...so weak. Sorry Scott, had to give this a 2 star rating.

Surrounded and outgunned, a group of private military contractors known as “Strange Company” find themselves on a remote planet at the edge of known space, and on the losing end of a bad contract. Orbital D-beam strikes, dropships bristling with auto-guns, missiles, and troops - even Monarch space marines in state-of-the-art advanced battle rattle - will try to prevent the company from reaching the exfil LZ and getting off-world.

A drone of inner monologue
Revisado: 12-05-22
I can see what the author was intending, but half the time the main character is droning on and on about his victimhood. It feels less like science fiction and more like sitting in on a futuristic therapy session.

Historia
Books and Bug are polar opposites, despite their friendship. Rumors on the road speak of a hospital in Washing D.C. Leading a small group of survivors, including pregnant women, the two travel in earnest to provide the soon-to-be mothers a safe place to deliver. Bug–a natural, charismatic leader–refuses to leave anyone behind while Books–a pragmatic social outsider–wishes not to be responsible for the safety of others. Together, they're exactly what this group needs to survive. But DC isn't exactly the safe haven they hoped for.

Historia
The philosopher asks: "Faced with the mutually exclusive choice between moral principle and the survival of your family, which is the correct path?" Philosophers love to pose such questions, and in the day-to-day struggle, such thinkers rarely attain to a level of relevance rivaling that of the simple hunger pang. Their careful considerations dissipate under the leveled gun. We do not feel their disapproving gaze when The Others draw near. When the world sends doom, the survivors do not hesitate. The survivors do what is necessary.

Another Gem in the collection
Revisado: 10-11-22
The characters are well fleshed out and presented. The story arc feels realistic and well developed. The optics do feel a bit plagued by gaps in fundamental understanding of economics and property dynamics however. Overall, a good listen and credits well spent.

Probably the least noteworthy in the series. Story seems to land on a form of social apathy then remains there. Reminiscent of the Time Machine where Morlocks are eating the Eloi only here nobody gives a darn, ..which is where the author leaves it.

But as the threat of invasion from nearby RUPAC special forces loom, Reach, Alexa, and Brody seek to make newfound neighbors into allies. But friendship isn’t easy to come by, even on a planet as hostile to humans as Amir. Well performed but comes up short in the writing. Suffers from a bit of repetitive and redundant situational themes. Feels like the author was just filling time and tossing out the occasional nugget of entertainment.
