One morning in late 2017, New York Times columnist Frank Bruni woke up with strangely blurred vision. He wondered at first if some goo or gunk had worked its way into his right eye. But this was no fleeting annoyance, no fixable inconvenience.

Historia
Anthony Fauci is arguably the most famous–and most revered–doctor in the world today. His role guiding America sanely and calmly through Covid (and through the torrents of Trump) earned him the trust of millions during one of the most terrifying periods in modern American history, but this was only the most recent of the global epidemics in which Dr. Fauci played a major role. His crucial role in researching HIV and bringing AIDS into sympathetic public view and his leadership in navigating the Ebola, SARS, West Nile, and anthrax crises, make him truly an American hero.

Anthony Fauci - Doctor Extraordinaire
Revisado: 07-19-24
The humble recounting of his contribution to humanity at a time when many were suffering with no solutions. For example beginning with HIV/AIDS and ending with COVID-19. His love of all humans is apparent throughout the accurate medical and scientific descriptions that is easily understood by those who are not academics or health professionals. The world is indebted to this man for his scientific contribution, and locally for the many very ill patients he treated. Choosing the audible book narrated by Dr. Fauci is an added bonus.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Pain and Love in Appalachia
Revisado: 11-02-23
For those of us, who are not familiar with this region in the United States, the picture drawn through the words of Barbara Kingsolver is enlightening. Charlie Thurston is an excellent narrator. The description of life as a foster child and all that comes with not having a family is uplifting when friends and neighbors willingly provide the emotional support.

Historia
Based on actual events that happened between 2005 and 2009 in a remote Mennonite community where more than 100 girls and women were drugged unconscious and assaulted in the night by what they were told (by the men of the colony) were "ghosts" or "demons", Miriam Toews' bold and affecting novel Women Talking is an imagined response to these real events.

Revisado: 12-12-21
I was Introduced to Mansoor through an interview by Amy Goodman on Democracy Now. I knew I wanted to know more about a gentle man who had a hopeful spirit. I then listened to his book, and agree with his decision to have a woman read it. Mansoor’s narrative of his and his brothers’ experiences while detained is painful as an American to hear. However, everyone should know what Guantanamo was and is told by a man who lived there.

Historia
Stephen L. Carter delves into his past and retrieves the inspiring story of his grandmother’s life. She was Black and a woman and a prosecutor, a graduate of Smith College and the granddaughter of slaves, as dazzlingly unlikely a combination as one could imagine in New York of the 1930s - and without the strategy she devised, Lucky Luciano, the most powerful Mafia boss in history, would never have been convicted. When special prosecutor Thomas E. Dewey selected 20 lawyers to help him clean up the city’s underworld, she was the only member of his team who was not a white male.

Background
Revisado: 02-27-19
The background - street addresses; illnesses; family relationships; society functions - is the emphasis. The expected listen was of the "forgotten story" taking down the mobster. By the time the story appeared in the book it no longer held this listener's attention. The first half of the book was very tedious.

Historia
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.
