Not bad for a litrpg. The story and universe is well realized. The fights and character growth ate both decent and the premise of the story is also decent. The characters aren"t bad but generally they are their own worst enemy. Their ability to communicate is hampered by their egos and sheer lack of critical thinking. Most of the time their problems could be solved with stopping and thinking. Instead they bluster through when they literally contain the power of the gods at their fingertips. At certain points they literally seem to have the key upgrading their powers at their fingertips but don"t. There is a listed reason for this but it seems arbitrary in the face of death/perma death for some of the characters. This wouldn"t be so bad if it wasn"t constantly apparent. It"s exhausting.

Solid post apocalyptic/dystopia event litrpg/gamelit story. No Harem. No agenda. Just an MC with a bit of an advantage dumped into an uncaring world with might and magic. The book primarily focuses on character growth and completing quests. Later it gets a bit of town simulation but still sticks to its roots which can be defined as, Axeman vs World.. Yes he"s a bit op but it"s a fun little ride. I"ll be buying the next one fore sure.

Mild spoilers.

Overall this was a decent listen. The story is there but overall the development seems lack luster. Like the first book (books?) there is decent character development but some of it is marred by the pacing of the story.

At some points the story goes off in odd directions creating ground work for future plot points that apprupty lead to nowhere and then go back to main story making things feel pretty jarring. Example, I"m a God and take this shiny rock use it to be stronger. I wont tell you how. Also go ahead and forget it exist for the rest of the book.

The MC fighting with himself over how he needs to get stronger and be smarter and train harder and then doing that for five minutes or so and then promptly forgetting about only to feel the same way again a few chapters got old. Also its time for Mommy to grow up. Stop going over the same emotion plot point over and over.

Lastly the ending was a weird mix of yay that guy had it coming and oh neat this cliche shit again. I guess what time trying to say is... Meh.

Voice actor was great though.

Weak MC

So in general I"m not the biggest fan of the The Hellequin Chronicles however I do enjoy the books and always seem read/listen to them along the way. They"re good books when you looking for fast and dirty action and enjoy a MC that doesn"t give a shit about killing a few bad people along the way and some decent urban fantasy and world building. This book however... Spent a lot of time with the MC hating herself, being upset about everything, not thinking and for some reason being afraid to hurt/kill really evil people. I don"t want to spoil to much but the main antagonist is responsible for multiple murders, tortures, and who knows what else. He kills his own parents, kills his own comrades and is generally a all around shit guy. He also targets the MC"s friends/coworkers as targets of his murder/torture. Yet somehow when the MC a literal gun to the said antagonist"s head she doesn"t pulled the trigger. Nor does she kill him when he is completely at her mercy again a a few moments later. She refuses, holding on to some vague idea that if she does "murder" him that she will turn evil just like him. That killing him will somehow destroy her humanity. Its shit. The human thing to do there after you find out someone is admitted murderer, torturer, and directly responsible for the murder of your mother... is to kill them with absolutely no mercy. In the end the MC does drive a sword into said bad guys chest but doesn"t kill him and while a supporting character does from the HC books does it just feels off.

The other nail in the coffin of this being a weak MC is her constant fear and worry of her own power, and how since its "demon based" (not really) it will drive her to kill her friends and family. The MC is so worried that she might lose control that she doesn"t even stop to think, if she does lose control there is a literal goddess a few feet away for most the book to stop her as well as the oldest werewolf in history. She is literally surrounded by people vastly more powerful than her with tons of experience and she is constantly worried about harming them. She even loses control and one point and basically doesn"t do shit and gets helped out by one of these said powerful experienced people. Her hubris is huge and she is selfish. Maybe this is meant to show that she is inexperienced and young but in the end it just gets tiresome. Its not what I"ve come to expect from Mr. McHugh and overall this is honestly the worst book I"ve seen come from him.

TL;DR Weak selfish MC who doesn"t use her brain enough and falls into everything instead of working to better herself. She is still pretty Marry Sue and is surrounded by a strong group of character so it doesn"t matter in the end. Worst book I"ve ever listened from Mr. McHugh.

What would have made The Dread Wyrm better?

The story? It was great. The audiobook? Mathew Wolf.

What did you like best about this story?

The story in a nutshell. It was great.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Well he took one of my most enjoyed audiobook series and made it into something I distaste. If you wanted this audiobook to alienate people from the series and make it so they go back to reading it for themselves, well its accomplishes that goal quite well.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

The book was great, among the best I"ve read. The audio book? Disappointment. A series I really was enjoying listening to went from something great to something terrible.

Any additional comments?

I really do enjoy the series, just not the narration change. I noticed Neil also picked up some other narrations/series that Mathew was narrating. Maybe something happened to Mathew, maybe he was too expensive or had a family emergency. I don"t know but I won"t be listening to another audio book in this series as long and Neil is the narrator. Let me put this very very simply, When that audio book sounds like crap it doesn"t matter how good the underlying story its still a crap audiobook. To Neil? Do some homework, listen to previous narrators when you are replacing them. Try to respect what they did before you instead of crapping all over it. Drink some water and maybe practice sounding different for different characters and not dropping accents and voice tones halfway through a sentence. Thanks.
