Historia
At the beginning of 1940, Germany was at the pinnacle of its power. By May 1945, Hitler was dead and Germany had suffered a disastrous defeat. Hitler had failed to achieve his aim of making Germany a super power and had left her people to cope with the endless shame of the Holocaust. Despite Hitler's grand ambitions and the successful early stages of the Third Reich's advances into Europe, Frank McDonough convincingly argues that Germany was only ever a middle-ranking power and never truly stood a chance against the combined forces of the Allies.

There is nothing new in this book but still very engrossing. Well written and researched. What really makes this book so engaging is the narration. It is excellent. One of the best I have listened to which is why I will no doubt, listen to it again. Loved Paul McGann ❤ narration.

Historia
Bloodlands is a new kind of European history, presenting the mass murders committed by the Nazi and Stalinist regimes as two aspects of a single history, in the time and place where they occurred: between Germany and Russia, when Hitler and Stalin both held power. Assiduously researched, deeply humane, and utterly definitive, Bloodlands will be required listening for anyone seeking to understand the central tragedy of modern history.

Shattering
Revisado: 07-24-21
This book is one of the most difficult I have ever read or listened to. Absolutely brutal and brilliant. It is impossible to forget what you hear, all backed up by expert research. Bloodlands is a very accurate description. The grounds of eastern Europe are soaked in the blood of the innocent. And finally a book that openly admits and backs up with facts the complete betrayal of Poland by the United States and Great Britain. This book is painful to listen to. Just a note to those who decide to listen to this book, do so at your own risk. The narration is excellent.

Historia
April 7, 1944 - This date marks the successful escape of two Slovak prisoners from one of the most heavily-guarded and notorious concentration camps of Nazi Germany. The escapees, Rudolf Vrba and Alfred Wetzler, fled over 100 miles to be the first to give the graphic and detailed descriptions of the atrocities of Auschwitz. Originally published in the early 1960s, I Escaped from Auschwitz is the striking autobiography of none other than Rudolf Vrba himself. Vrba details his life leading up to, during, and after his escape from his 21-month internment in Auschwitz.

Amazingly detailed
Revisado: 07-18-21
An in depth recounting of an incredible escape from Auschwitz. I have read many accounts of this escape but never all the details of it. Rather incredible how it was done even more incredible that these two men were not recaptured. They made it and,as they intended, warned the Jewish community of Hungary of their forth coming fate at the hands of the Nazis. This begs the question. Why, after being warned and given proof, were so many Hungarian Jews murdered in the gas chambers of Auschwitz? I guess that is a story for another book. This is an excellent book, very informative, easy to listen to and extremely well narrated. My only problem with the narration was minor and that was the volume of the narrator. I wish he had spoken a bit louder. Had to listen with headphones which I do not like to do but, as I said, that was very minor. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the Holocaust or World War Two.

Historia
On March 25, 1942, nearly a thousand young, unmarried Jewish women boarded a train in Poprad, Slovakia. Filled with a sense of adventure and national pride, they left their parents' homes wearing their best clothes and confidently waving good-bye. Believing they were going to work in a factory for a few months, they were eager to report for government service. Instead, the young women - many of them teenagers - were sent to Auschwitz. Their government paid 500 Reich Marks (about $200) apiece for Nazis to take them as slave labor. Of those 999 innocent deportees, only a few survived.

Revisado: 07-11-21
This story needed to be told to honor those young women, girls, those who survived and those who did not. Their strength was amazing and although scare almost all the time ,were incredibly courageous. Well written and researched, impeccable research, by the author. She wrote a book she can be very proud of and I believe the young women would be proud of it as well. Suzanne Toren's narration is excellent, one of the best I have heard.

Historia
In August 1897, the young Belgian commandant Adrien de Gerlache set sail for a three-year expedition aboard the good ship Belgica with dreams of glory. His destination was the uncharted end of the earth: the icy continent of Antarctica. But de Gerlache’s plans to be first to the magnetic South Pole would swiftly go awry. After a series of costly setbacks, the commandant faced two bad options: turn back in defeat and spare his men the devastating Antarctic winter, or recklessly chase fame by sailing deeper into the freezing waters.

Excellent story
Revisado: 05-23-21
This is an excellent story but suffers from bad narration. The narrator reads this like a children's book, mispronounced names throughout set my teeth on edge. It can be tolerated because of the very interesting story of Cook, despite him not being a very likable man. Yes, I finished it but wish I had used my credit more wisely.

This book could have been really good had the author had the courage to change the stereotypical ending. It was predictable. Excellent narration and the characters were quite good. Overall I would recommend this book but buyers beware of the storybook ending.

Wonderful from start to finish. The narration is absolutely wonderful and the story brilliantly written. I highly recommend this audio book. I wish I had not finished it so quickly but I have no doubt that I will listen to it again. Definitely a book that bears a repeat listen. Very quickly this author has become one of my favorite. No spoilers here. I do not wish to ruin a moment of this novel for anyone else. Easily ranks as the best book I have listened to in a very long time.

Historia
No radio distress call ever crackled from the submarine USS Grunion. In 1942, under the fog of World War II, the vessel simply vanished without a trace. For nearly sixty-five years, only a dead silence lingered regarding the fate of the sub and its seventy-man crew—until now. Here author Peter F. Stevens reveals the incredible true story of the search for and discovery of the Grunion—as well as the navy’s shocking and willful cover-up of the submarine’s baffling disappearance.

Revisado: 11-26-20
A great but tragic story. A very engaging listen. The history is great. The ending is sad but uplifting also because the 70 men are finally recognized and finally laid to rest properly. Now their country honors them as it should have in 1941. The narration is very good, clear and concise and he doesn't struggle with the more difficult Japanese names. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in naval battles of the second world war or in general human interest stories.
