really good.
Revisado: 11-06-22
this book was really good. I need to be clear that I absolutely love everything Darcy Coates has written. some of her books i have listened to over and over again. That being said I will say this one wasn't my favorite. I will absolutely listen to it again it was really good. I just felt it wasn't on par with how creepy and scary her books usually are. this would be a great book to start with if you haven't read her before or if you are just starting to read/listen to horror.
the narration was superb!

The Manipulator. I can manipulate the emotions of anyone who lets me. I will make you hurt, make you cry, make you laugh and sigh. But my words don't affect him. Especially not when I plead for him to leave. He's always there, watching and waiting. And I can never look away. Not when I want him to come closer. The Shadow. I didn't mean to fall in love. But now that I have, I can't stay away. I'm mesmerized by her smile, by her eyes, and the way she moves. I'll keep watching and waiting. Until I can make her mine. And once she is, I'll never let her go.

Really good
Revisado: 09-12-22
This book is really good. It is very dark and twisted but I love that. the only thing I didn't like was that the sex became repetitive to the point I skipped through most of it. Other than that it was really good. Worth the credit and I will absolutely get the next book.

Beautifully twisted
Revisado: 09-01-22
This book, oh this book. I couldn't stop listening. I finished it in two days. It is a twisted and beautiful love story. Not everyone and everything is as it seems. The first book has an excellent twist. The second book doesn't have a twist or a surprise in it but it was just as good. I will be clear that this is not a "realistic" book. If you get hung up on that kind of thing this book is definitely not for you. I personally don't mind that at all. I live in reality every day. I don't need it in my books.
This isn't your feel good love story. If that is what you are hoping for look elsewhere. This isn't the story of the good girl changing the bad boys life for the better. This is a beautifully twisted love. This is the kind of love story that makes you fall in love with a serial killer! The villans are the heros here and all you want is for them to survive. For me this book was perfect. Even the monster's deserve to be loved.
Another review talked about the similarities of the murders in saw and that is 100% accurate. Grayson's methods are very similar. To the point that Grayson loved puzzles. However, it isn't hard at all to get past this fact and focus on everything else.
The narration was perfect. I love having a male and female narrator. I think it does so much for the performance. They both did great voices for the characters and the accents were perfect.

They say eyes are the windows to the soul—but when he looks at me through hues of slate-green and flaring blue embers, I'm terrified of what's watching me from behind his clashing gaze, something primal and feverish that threatens to melt me like fire in ice. I fear falling into Kallum Locke's pitch-black soul. But after I'm called to a crime scene to investigate the most gruesome act of violence to descend on the legendary town of Hollow's Row, I have no choice but to turn to Kallum, to the man I had locked away in an asylum for the criminally insane.

This book is a lovely bad thing. I wanted more and I didn't understand why I wasn't getting more until the very end when yiy realize you only have a minute left IT IS JUST THE FIRST BOOK!!! so frustrating. I want it all right this minute. This one just came out! It will seem like forever until the second book comes out. This book will suck you in and hold your attention until the bitter cliffhanger end! Get it! you won't regret it. tye narration is wonderful. I love having a male and female narrator, it adds so much to the listening experience!

worst narration ever....
Revisado: 08-13-22
I love these books I have since they first came out forever ago. I was so excited to see it on here. what a let down. The narrator doesn't do voices AT ALL... SAME VOICE ALL THE WAY THROUGH. The narration made the movies look well done.. yes, it is that bad. I wish they would redo them. I don't even know how this narrator was approved to narrate anything.

NO!!!!
Revisado: 05-22-22
All I can say is that this is in no way the "unseen side of motherhood". I am a stay at home mother of two and I can not relate to a single part of this. I love my children. I don't love one and hate the other. Blythe the main character in the book is horrible. The author tried to gain sympathy for her and only her but I feel no sympathy for a woman who blames a new born baby for the fact that she doesn't love her and wished she never had her. No, this book is not the unseen side of motherhood. this is a woman who desperately needed to be put in a mental hospital to get help. This book also blamed her mother and grandmother for her being the way she is. That is a cop-out.

Historia
Two years ago, Emily Burnham had an epiphany about the shallowness of her life. And she made it her mission to become a different person...a better woman. Out from under the controlling thumb of her mother, Emily is tasting the real world for the first time. And she likes it. Nixon Caldwell has served his time in the Marine Corps, surviving two brutal tours in Afghanistan. He is back home, surrounded by what he likes best...isolation. It's certainly the easiest way to avoid confrontation of the consuming guilt that is weighing him down.

I skipped through most of it.
Revisado: 05-18-22
This book is soooooo slow and even when you get to the "good" still absolutely nothing happens. this book can be told in just a few sentences.
Guy meets girl. they are attracted to each other but do absolutely nothing about for so long. finally something happens. guy and girl love each other. guy refuses to acknowledge it. guy and girl fight and breake up then get back together. the end.
the only feelings I had we for Nix and the suffering he was facing. Emily was annoyed at best. this book was just meh. even the epilogue was a let down.

These books!!!!
Revisado: 05-02-22
I don't know how many times I have read and listened to the black winter series now, but I can honestly say they are absolutely without a doubt my favorite books I have ever read and I have read well over a thousand books at this point. They are well written. the characters and world are so developed that you live it right along with them. the love story between Clare and Dorran is so beautiful it is breathtaking. they don't love each other because of everything that has happened. They were always going to love each other even before the stillness. I whole heartedly believe no matter what they would have found each other.
if you haven't read the first book (voices in the snow) stop reading this review now because I am going to be throwing out spoilers.
The hollows are absolutely terrifying! people think zombies are scary HA. zombies are nothing compared to the hollows. damn near indestructible, ravenous, will eat anything including each other. They are what nightmares are made of. I can't imagine the sleepless nights Ms. Darcy Coates had while writing these books. What creates the hollows is even more terrifying because it could absolutely happen. All it would take is one scientist making a mistake and that is it for all of us. Without Clare and Dorran's love story these books would be so painful bleak and realistic they would be unbearable. even with their love story parts of these books will leave you feeling crushed with sadness over what could happen to this world.
angela dawe is an absolute gift to narration! her range for voices is phenomenal! Her regular speaking voice is wonderful. She could narrate the worst book and make it bearable!

wonderful
Revisado: 04-28-22
I loved this book, it really was wonderful. Lowe and Hadley were well developed characters both flawed and that really helped you care about what was happening to them.
This book for me unfortunately was not as good as the first book (Bitter Spirits) for a few reasons. First was that the big shocking twist wasn't a shock or a twist at all. I knew exactly what was going on way before it wax even hinted at. Second was that the last few chapters felt like she didn't care to give the story the strong ending it deserved. They were anticlimactic.
I said this about the narration for the first book and I will say it again with this one. These books desperately need male narrator for the male parts. don't get me wrong Amy does a wonderful job her voices are great and she really tried. however, not having a male and female narrator makes it hard to know who's point of view you are in sometimes. She uses her regular speaking voice for anything that isn't dialogue between characters even in Lowes point of view and it just didn't work for me.
All in all this is a wonderful book and is absolutely worth the credit. I wish the third book was on here!

Historia
Aida Palmer performs a spirit medium show onstage at Chinatown's illustrious Gris-Gris speakeasy. However, her ability to summon (and expel) the dead is more than just an act. Winter Magnusson is a notorious bootlegger who's more comfortable with guns than ghosts. Unfortunately for him, he's the recent target of a malevolent hex that renders him a magnet for hauntings. After Aida's supernatural assistance is enlisted to banish the ghosts, her spirit-chilled aura heats up as the charming bootlegger casts a different sort of spell on her.

Revisado: 04-26-22
I am obsessed with the 1920's and the paranormal so when I found this book I knew I was going to enjoy it but I had no idea how much! The writing is beautiful. The characters pull you in and keep you invested them. The love story is so beautiful. Aida and Winter belong together and you know it the moment they meet. They have a fun. and very sexy relationship. Aida is a spirit medium and I loved that! Winter, oh Winter. He is the bees knees, beautiful, broken, tall, and so protective of the ones he loves. he is everything. this book is everything!
my only critique is that this book and its counter part Grim Shadows(which is about Winters brother and his love interest Hadley) desperately needed two narrators. Amy does great with the voices but the parts that are Winter's point of view and in the second book Lowe's point of view really needed a male narrator. other than that these books are absolutely worth the credits!
