Historia
Robert Caro's monumental book makes public what few outsiders knew: that Robert Moses was the single most powerful man of his time in the City and in the State of New York. And in telling the Moses story, Caro both opens up to an unprecedented degree the way in which politics really happens—the way things really get done in America's City Halls and Statehouses—and brings to light a bonanza of vital information about such national figures as Alfred E. Smith and Franklin D. Roosevelt (and the genesis of their blood feud), about Fiorello La Guardia, John V. Lindsay and Nelson Rockefeller.

An amazing true story
Revisado: 10-26-24
Held my interest for 60 hours. An impressive man who became more and more arrogant and unwilling to listen to any one else’s ideas with each accomplishment.

Historia
Alfa Ndiaye is a Senegalese man who, never before having left his village, finds himself fighting as a so-called “Chocolat” soldier with the French army during World War I. When his friend Mademba Diop, in the same regiment, is seriously injured in battle, Diop begs Alfa to kill him and spare him the pain of a long and agonizing death in No Man’s Land. Unable to commit this mercy killing, madness creeps into Alfa’s mind as he comes to see this refusal as a cruel moment of cowardice.

Definitely weird and not for everybody. Reminded me of a Dylan song from the Desolation Row era. Not a coincidence, I think.

Historia
Lucy Barton is a writer, but her ex-husband, William, remains a hard man to read. William, she confesses, has always been a mystery to me. Another mystery is why the two have remained connected after all these years. They just are. So Lucy is both surprised and not surprised when William asks her to join him on a trip to investigate a recently uncovered family secret—one of those secrets that rearrange everything we think we know about the people closest to us.

Historia
Ignition! is the story of the search for a rocket propellant which could be trusted to take man into space. This search was a hazardous enterprise carried out by rival labs who worked against the known laws of nature, with no guarantee of success or safety. John Drury Clark writes with irreverent and eyewitness immediacy about the development of the explosive fuels strong enough to negate the relentless restraints of gravity. The resulting volume is as much a memoir as a work of history, sharing a behind-the-scenes view of an enterprise that eventually took men to the moon.

Great funny story…too much chemistry
Revisado: 10-08-21
As other reviewers have mentioned there’s a lot of chemistry in Ignition. Far over my head! But (and I admit it’s a BIG but) if you can get past that the story John Clark tells is very funny and well told.

Interesting but dated
Revisado: 03-25-21
Interesting view from 1977. I think Sagan would have wanted to update it. There were many things where time has changed his statements dramatically. His accounts of computers look primitive now. And his review of the causes of the demise of the dinosaurs cover many possibilities it not the one that is currently the consensus view.

Historia
"Life changes fast....You sit down to dinner and life as you know it ends." These were among the first words Joan Didion wrote in January 2004. Her daughter was lying unconscious in an intensive care unit, a victim of pneumonia and septic shock. Her husband, John Gregory Dunne, was dead. The night before New Year's Eve, while they were sitting down to dinner, he suffered a massive and fatal coronary. The two had lived and worked side by side for nearly 40 years.

Pulitzer Prize, Biography, 2016. Barbarian Days is William Finnegan's memoir of an obsession, a complex enchantment. Surfing only looks like a sport. To initiates it is something else entirely: a beautiful addiction, a demanding course of study, a morally dangerous pastime, a way of life.

Not a surfing fan
Revisado: 05-13-20
I’m not a surfer or a surfing fan but I thought this was an amazing and beautiful book. It’s a memoir, travelogue, anthropological study and a very human story. I had to research boards and some terms and I know that not everyone would be able to deal with all the surfing, but the Pulitzer is very much deserved imho.

Brian Grazer - Hollywood Godfather
Revisado: 01-06-20
Brian Grazer has lots of interesting stories. He reminds me of a Hollywood godfather. Hollywood because everything is superlative. Everything is the best or the worst. No middle ground. Godfather because everything is about respect. People work with him not because of the money or the quality of the work but because they have a connection with and respect him. I hate to think what happens if someone disrespects him!
Good stories though.

Scientific developments radically alter our understanding of the world. Whether it's technology, climate change, health research, or the latest revelations of neuroscience, physics, or psychology, science has, as Edge editor John Brockman says, "become a big story, if not the big story". In that spirit this new addition to Edge.org's fascinating series asks a powerful and provocative question: What do you consider the most interesting and important recent scientific news?
