Long Ad Little Substance
Revisado: 01-06-23
Business coaches and consultants are encouraged to write books these days. This book is a good example of why that is a bad idea. Lots of self promotion, upbeat cheerleading and very little substance.

Historia
Francesca Gino has been studying rebels in life and in the workplace for more than 15 years. She has discovered that rebels - those who practice "positive deviance" at work - are harder to manage, but they are good for the bottom line: their passion, drive, curiosity, and creativity raise the entire organization to a new level. And she has found that at home, rebels are more engaged partners, parents, and friends. Packed with strategies for embracing rebellion at work and in life, Rebel Talent encourages all of us to rebel against what’s comfortable, so that we can thrive.

Rebel with a Cause
Revisado: 07-28-22
Humanity tends to progress in fits and start. As we face, a loss of biodiversity, a climate crisis, and the threat of authoritarianism, we are in need if rebels. This book is a beautiful look at, and argument for, well mannered rebels. Nice, but a small subset. Ignored are more youthful rebels and rebel movements. Not bad for an academic.

Some great content and glaring flaws
Revisado: 06-30-22
It is well and good for white people to quote rap music. It is not okay for white people to use the N word, even in a quote. It is increasingly repugnant when most quotes they choose have the N word.
There is some good management advice and some examples of managerial cluelessness. There is a point at which he talks about employee feedback about his frequent use of profanity. He goes into a lengthy thought process about the decision on whether to control profanity in the company or let it rip. He comes to the conclusion that he will encourage mindful use of profanity. First of all the complaint was about his use of profanity, not the company’s. Earlier he had spoken about leading by example her he fails to own his example. Furthermore he designates the only point of a mindful use of profanity being not intimidating others and the only example he provided for a good use of profanity was one used to intimidate.
Wealthy white men have a hard time recognizing their own privilege.

The book is good, but....
Revisado: 04-07-22
I found enough merit in this book to go to the website (mystorybrand.com) and found that this guy does not follow his own advice at all. His website provides a resource that is confusing and incomplete. if you type in Storybrand.com you are taken to a website that hawks a $995 workshop and nothing else. Exactly what he said not to do. What do you think of people who provide advice that they do not follow?

Valuable Listen and Read
Revisado: 10-07-21
When I listen to a book that is valuable, I also buy a hard copy. That was important for this book as it has too maybe gems to capture by listening alone. The principles themselves are a great resource. But the bigger value is simply the process of capturing life in principles. Dalio is wicked smart, so there is a great deal of value in his principles but ultimately, we must consider and construct a set of principles for each of us as individuals and for each company as a unique expression of a dynamic culture. This will become required reading for our management team.

I can't take it any more
Revisado: 08-05-21
Oh lord, I gave it a gallant effort. Three quarters in and I'm finally throwing in the towel. That this book has high ratings is an insult to humanity. Never have I read such trite, over-the-top, platitude-laden drivel. What a great literary tool to tell a fable of a great man who speaks your thoughts and to provide two characters to praise every word. And if that weren't enough the worst love story ever told is thrown in.
This is one of the genres that promotes an abundance mindset from a perspective of white privilege. In this case, it is complete with obedient swarthy servants that seem unworthy of the great insights being bestowed upon the protagonists.

Profoundly Sophomoric
Revisado: 06-23-21
Yes, this book is sophomoric. There is much to be learned when we are sophomores and relearned as we mature. This tale is far too simple to be believable in its unfolding but it provides context worth remembering. Then again I am a sucker for business as a morality tale. This is going on to our required reading (Listening) list.

Lacking Depth

This lacks the detail I would have liked. Perhaps a book on half the number ideas (25 1/4) would have been better. The book Working Backwards was a better fit for me.

What’s Up Audible?
Revisado: 08-09-20
This book has 50 ratings and is ranked a 5. There is no way that is remotely credible. This book is poorly written and has limited real information, at least to the point where I gave up. What limited information there is pertains to how to use specific pieces of freeware. The best advice given is to google something to learn more. That advice is give often. I see now in the disclaimer below the text box I’m typing into it says, “Audible posts reviews at its discretion.” How is this not blatant mendacity? How much does it cost to get such a bad book to a 5? My rant is over, I’m going to look for another audiobook streaming company.

Historia
Why is it so hard to make lasting changes in our companies, in our communities, and in our own lives? The primary obstacle is a conflict that's built into our brains, say Chip and Dan Heath, authors of the critically acclaimed best seller Made to Stick. Psychologists have discovered that our minds are ruled by two different systems - the rational mind and the emotional mind - that compete for control. The rational mind wants a great beach body; the emotional mind wants that Oreo cookie.
