Ok
Revisado: 05-29-24
This was not my favorite. I am guessing even though the audible date says 2022, it’s an older book. Way too tame and sappy for me. I’m all for slow burn and will they/won’t they but I’m not so fond of conflicted internal monologues. Oh and my new pet peeve trope was in high gear in this book: the well meaning friend who literally gets mad and tries to interfere because they don’t agree with the main character’s romantic choices. Irl that person would not be my friend anymore but in wlw books, the friend is always treated like a true friend just looking out for main character.
Also the way the narrator pronounces Canandaigua made me laugh every time.

Historia
In the year 2514, the only thing more dangerous than the seas is those who sail them. Life aboard the mercenary ship Man o’ War is rarely dull, as hurricanes, swarms of jellyfish, and man-eating squid pose daily doses of danger. As intrigue and subterfuge from enemies old and new begin to surround its captain, the infamous Miranda Stillwater, even an uncanny sense of direction won’t be enough to help Compass Rose navigate these dangerous straits.

Pretty good
Revisado: 02-07-24
This one was kind of weird. I almost gave up about halfway through because the drug use storyline just seemed so unnecessary and contrived plus some of the relationship issues were just annoying. But it got more interesting after that (though there was yet another unnecessary substance abuse issue added later). I’m really glad I did persevere because the last third of the book was super interesting. I hadn’t been really paying attention to how much was left and was pretty surprised when it ended all of a sudden. I hope there’s a third book out there.

The main characters being teenage virgins made me feel like too much of a pedo. I just couldn’t do it. Let me read their follow up in about 10-20 years and I’m in.

Ups and Downs
Revisado: 01-16-24
Well, I have an hour left and I’m checking reviews so that tells you something. It’s kind of wild how there’s so many vastly different reviews.
It’s kind of an unusual story because the characters get together right away so you dont have any anticipation.
So the first half or maybe two thirds of the book were ok. But now it’s like nothing is happening forever. I feel like I’m reading the journal of someone holed up in a hotel room for an extended period of time. Occasionally they switch locations but they are still just in a hotel room doing a deep dive into their every thought and feeling.
Kind of lightly spoilery below here:
I realllllllllly wanted Sofia to turn out to be a spy too and the whole thing be a setup. Or have her be anything more interesting than naive stooge. I still have an hour so I guess it’s technically possible but doubtful.

Very Romancey Romance

Despite including a death as a major plot point, this was the least angsty book wlw romance book ever. Sometimes i wanted to just fast forward and get on with it already but overall it was a decent book.

Everyone around Iris Kelly is in love. Her best friends are all coupled up, her siblings have partners that are perfect for them, and her parents are still blissfully married. And she’s happy for all of them, truly. Iris doesn’t want any of that—dating, love, romance. She’ll stick to her commitment-free hookups, thanks very much, except no one in her life will just let her be. Everyone wants to see her settled down, but she holds firmly to her no dating rule. There’s only one problem—Iris is a romance author facing an imminent deadline for her second book, and she’s completely out of ideas.

Decent first half but loses steam in the end
Revisado: 11-30-23
Damn I was totally into this one until towards the end. There were some cringeworthy moments along the way but I enjoyed the main characters and the story.
Spoilers below but I just read a ton of reviews and couldn’t find anyone that disturbed by what made me lose interest. Stevie is trying to escape from chronically allowing other people to control her life and Iris is defensively avoiding relationships so she won’t get hurt. Then in the end Stevie’s so-called friend Ren goes behind her back and interferes in her relationship under the patronizing guise of knowing what’s best for Stevie even though Stevie was clear she didn’t want it and in the process breaks Iris’ heart. And we are supposed to just accept it and think it’s fine because Stevie wants to be an actress? No. Stevie needed to grow tf up. I don’t even want to finish the rest because Iris deserves better than this person who let her friend do something like that. I wanted Stevie to just honestly and truly realize it was silly to leave and that she loved her life here and outgrew acting, ren and her ex.

Wow so many twists and turns
Revisado: 11-01-23
So many times I thought I understood where the book was going and then there’d be some pivot out of nowhere. Sometimes it just changed the plot, sometimes the entire type of book. It was good. Looking forward to the second book but unfortunately I have a problem with series where once I forget the first book, it’s hard for me to get myself to pick back up the second!

I liked it but
Revisado: 10-22-23
not like I loved this author’s previous books. I missed the spiciness I’ve come to expect from her. There were also a couple of moments where it felt like a conflict was artificially added jump scare style.
Overall it was a very good book. Abby Craden was wonderful as usual. The story was solid.

The first 80% was great!
Revisado: 06-17-23
I really enjoyed the first 75-80% of the book. I stayed invested and had a hard time turning it off. But then towards the end it just took a turn. I’m trying not to be super spoily but probably should turn back if you want a fresh mind going in. Everyone was so selfish and dgaf about Caitlyn or anything she went through. I realllly wanted something more fun for a conclusion. I thought maybe Ruth could figure it out on her own and confront Caitlyn leading to illicit spicy time while no one else knew. Or maybe Caitlyn could reveal the truth to Ruth in a fun way where she took it as a relief Caitlyn wasn’t Chloe. But no. Ruth had to be the victim and treat Caitlyn like everyone else in Caitlyn’s life who only cared about their own feelings and not hers. And it was weird having spicy time tagged on the end of the story for no reason. Felt like the whole end of the book was written by someone different than the rest of the book.
