Good behind the scenes stories about the Shaq/Kobe Lakers years, but what sets this book apart from the rest is that some of the author asides and turns of phrase made me bust out loud laughing. The reader delivers the jokes well, so they keep hitting. Enjoyed! And I am a Sixers fan.

It is a swamp out there in nonfiction, so I was thrilled to listen to something that lets the data speak for itself. A very important work for explaining the continuing shift toward individualism over the course of six generations and the positives and negatives that have come with that change. Also a siren that social media’s impact on society is deep and in many ways harmful. That last statement may be obvious, but the author confirms the matter with some very solid evidence.

This was a great retelling of the 76ers saga during “The Process”. A fair telling of events that identifies what went right and wrong without creating heroes and villains. That is quite a feat in today’s world of journalism. However, the narration was difficult to listen to. I don’t know if it was the inexperienced reader (the author) or terrible sound editing. But, word emphasis is odd in many spots and there is a real lack of fluid reading. The story is so well crafted that I simply dealt with it and got used to it, but it is certainly an issue with this audiobook that has to be mentioned.

Many times you have to choose between a story with character development and a story with a great plot. Prince of Thieves delivers on both. Add in a reader that brings a lot of atmosphere and you have an enjoyable audio book for dull work commutes.

I really enjoyed this brief book. I could relate to the author’s experiences which seemed a lot like mine as an adjunct professor. I loved the author’s performance reading the audio book. It felt very authentic. It was like he had a dinner party, and he shared his stories with us. I recommend to any Seinfeld fan or fan of sitcoms since there was quite a bit of behind the scenes stuff that it interesting. His Larry David impression was pretty good, too!

A full telling of the story of the 1985 Bears. The character portraits are detailed and complete, and the key games are brought back to life. Narration is excellent; he does slight impressions of some of the players and it really works. I will offer one warning: the author makes a lot of high brow references and turns of phrases that seem odd in a book about the 85 Bears. There are also a number of tangential detours into the author’s life that seemed out of place, but overall this was a very enjoyable listen.

Compelling characters that seemed to me to capture people leaving middle age and coming to grips with the start of their late years. Themes of regret and second chances permeate. All thought provoking. Yet the best parts come when a haunting atmosphere descends on the story about midway through. I was surprised to suddenly find myself in an eerie ghost story in the middle of a Russo book, but it added to the story in an interesting way.

You don’t need to have read Camino Island to enjoy this book, but Camino Island is the better of the two stories, so read that one first anyway. This one is not very complex, but an enjoyable beach read. I like the Bruce character who takes center stage here.

The book relives the Cubs 2016 season with incredible insight into every player’s, coach’s, and executive’s journey to Game 7 of the World Series. More importantly, it delivers a powerful message about leadership and the importance of people. Sits nicely alongside Astroball.

Verducci does a serviceable job as the narrator of his own book. He isn’t a polished audiobook reader, but he gives the yeoman’s effort and the book’s story pushes everything to five stars.

Great Story — But a Little Heavy with the Politics

A very robust story about the making of Friends as well as interesting insights into some specific episodes. The only drawback is that the author drifts into extended assessments of Friends within the context of today’s politics, and her criticism over what Friends didn’t do sometimes overshadows what Friends did accomplish.

The narrator does a good job bringing the story to life. I liked her attempts to capture people’s dialect. Her Lisa Kudrow impression is pretty good.
