Historia
Home alone with her young children during a blizzard, a mother tucks her son back into bed in the middle of the night. She hears a noise—old houses are always making some kind of noise. But this sound is disturbingly familiar: it’s the tread of footsteps, unusually heavy and slow, coming up the stairs. Shrouded in the shadows, she sees the figure of a man appear down the hallway. Terrified, she quietly wakes her children and hustles them into the oldest part of the house, a tiny, secret room concealed behind a wall.

Hold on to your seat…
Revisado: 02-18-24
Terrifying though this is, there is an intelligence and sensitivity in the writing that made me trust that the roller coaster would come to a stop in a satisfying way. I was not disappointed.

Historia
Let Us Descend describes a journey from the rice fields of the Carolinas to the slave markets of New Orleans and into the fearsome heart of a Louisiana sugar plantation. A journey that is as beautifully rendered as it is heart wrenching, the novel is “[t]he literary equivalent of an open wound from which poetry pours” (NPR). Annis, sold south by the white enslaver who fathered her, is the listener’s guide. As she struggles through the miles-long march, Annis turns inward, seeking comfort from memories of her mother and stories of her African warrior grandmother.

She rocks
Revisado: 11-21-23
The lyrical prose and spiritual sensibility of the main character were deeply felt. I could have read on indefinitely.

Historia
It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart.

Very satisfying
Revisado: 10-24-16
I rarely care enough about a book to review it, but this one was so exceptional, in multiple ways, i think it should be acknowledged. The author has a gift for language and plot. the story has been crafted with an enlightened perspective on events personal and political from recent history. It is humorous as well as keenly observant, and has been woven to connect many threads with sensitivity and kindness. I loved it.
Should be a prize winner.

Really liked this one
Revisado: 07-06-15
Good summer reading or great as a take along in the car. Plot is fun right till the end and, as with the rest of this series, descriptions are both literary and creative. Can't wait to start the next one.
