Great story, well performed
Revisado: 12-03-21
The first section is a struggle since it details the suffering of poor Rosie, but the mood lifts when we meet Bettina. One of the best stories I have listened to this year.

Historia
Frances Hodgson Burnett published The Making of a Marchioness in 1901. She had written Little Lord Fauntleroy 15 years before and would write The Secret Garden in 10 years' time; it is these two books for which she is best known. Yet Marchioness was one of Nancy Mitford's favourite books, was considered 'the best novel Mrs Hodgson Burnett wrote' by Marghanita Laski, and is taught on a university course in America together with novels such as Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, and Daisy Miller.

Half of this story was great...
Revisado: 08-18-21
First, Lucy Scott's narration was superb...I will definitely look for more of her performances. I really enjoyed the first part of this story--who doesn't love a rags to riches story? The latter part of the story was dark and foreboding, and just not the fun I was expecting from the first part. It was still worth the credit, so just be prepared for a sharp detour.

I can’t figure out what this books wants to be…but it isn’t good. At the beginning I thought it might be a religious story, but these two teenage girls “sold” into marriage by their father appear to enjoy sex too much for that. Then it’s going to be about the intrepid heroine becoming an empowered businesswoman (hardly likely in the 1400s). I did have hopes that I might learn something about the silk industry, but that storyline is really just background texture. Nope, this story is about a weak woman masquerading as a strong woman who is desperate to stay the mistress of an evil tyrant who doesn’t even seem to care about her. Maybe it all comes together in the end, but I just can't get there with this book.

On My Way To Being A Big Fan of Laetitia Rodd
- De Lucy en 06-13-20
My very favorite cozy investigator
Revisado: 03-23-20
I loved the first Laetitia Rodd book so much, I listened to it four times, This book is great, but it felt more contrived and - I thought - more difficult to follow and close sub-story loops as the first. That said, all of the familiar characters are back and as endearing as ever. The narrator, Anna Bentinck, is as close to perfection as I can imagine.
Long live Laetitia Rodd! Fingers crossed Kate Saunders loves writing these stories as much as I love "reading" them.

Book 1 was much better, but still decent
Revisado: 02-21-18
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Probably not. I have read probably ten mystery books now that use a copy-cat Ripper as the basis of the story...seems lazy to me.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
I didn't guess the real murderer, but we weren't introduced to him until late in the story. The actual ending was just okay for me.
Any additional comments?
If more stories are written in this series, I will wait and see how it is reviewed before I download. Based on the first book, it's clear this author can write a good story with strong characters.

Here, by the whispering waters of the Thames, Fiona Finnegan, a worker in a tea factory, hopes to own a shop one day, together with her lifelong love, Joe Bristow, a costermonger's son. With nothing but their faith in each other to spur them on, Fiona and Joe struggle, save, and sacrifice to achieve their dreams.

Glad I took a chance on the series
Revisado: 01-31-18
What made the experience of listening to The Tea Rose the most enjoyable?
I like historical fiction novels, and this one was fun. It had good main characters and villains, interesting settings, and moved along nicely. Jill Tanner is always a solid narrator, in my opinion.
Have you listened to any of Jill Tanner’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I've listened to all three of the Tea Rose books and this was my favorite. The Winter Rose was also very good, but I was not as pleased with the last in the series, The Wild Rose.
Any additional comments?
Sad to see the series come to an end. It seems that the German thread could have continued through to WWII, but all good things...

Historia
Set in the industrialising England of the Napoleonic wars, a period of bad harvests, Luddite riots, and economic unrest, Shirley is the story of two contrasting heroines and the men they love. One is the shy Caroline Helstone, trapped in the oppressive atmosphere of a Yorkshire rectory, whose life represents the plight of single women in the 19th century. The other is the vivacious Shirley Keeldar, who inherits a local estate and whose wealth liberates her from convention.

Best story I have listened to in years
Revisado: 01-31-18
I still can't believe this book has escaped me for nearly fifty years...it's now my favorite from Charlotte Bronte. For me, this story sort of has it all: great, sympathetic characters, many different story threads that come together beautifully, compelling protagonists, historical context, a bit of mystery, a bit of love story, terrific narration, and an excellent pace.
I look forward to listening to this again very soon.

I have listened to all of the books in the series and I have enjoyed all of them. This is a good story, with distinct and loveable characters, told by a talented narrator. I will continue to download and listen this series...I am always interested to see how Molly matures and changes...and, in the best ways, stays the same :)

Adding to this unrest is the controversial Sofia Delacruz, who has come to London from Spain to preach a revolutionary gospel of love and forgiveness that many consider blasphemous. Thomas Pitt, commander of Special Branch, is charged with protecting Sofia.

Could not end fast enough
Revisado: 05-09-15
I have listened to every single book in this series and this was, by far, THE WORST. There was a super-annoying preachy element that rubbed me the wrong way. About half way through this book, I tried to calculate how long would really be needed to tell the story to current point and 4.5 hours (to me) would equate to 15 minutes. There was so much repetition and drawing out of obscure points that I could easily have taken naps and picked up the story missing nothing.
The most upsetting to me is the lack of Charlotte. I know, Pitt was promoted and now she can't really participate...but Charlotte's character and her participation is what gave these stories depth and interest. I am sorry to say that this is likely my last book of this series...time to find something fresh.
Davina Porter - as always - gave a great performance...thank goodness.
