Historia
Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

Worth Listening… with Lower Expectations
Revisado: 10-06-24
An enjoyable listen, well-read. Uneven in some places — too trivial and modern in language. But compelling characters who deserved more thoughtful interior lives. Perhaps I’m missing some depth because I’m not a gamer.

Historia
First published over 40 years ago, The Cancer Journals is a startling, powerful account of Audre Lorde's experience with breast cancer and mastectomy. Long before narratives explored the silences around illness and women's pain, Lorde questioned the rules of conformity for women's body images and supported the need to confront physical loss not hidden by prosthesis.

Piercing truths
Revisado: 09-19-24
Much has changed since Audre Lorde’s mastectomy but her description of our inability to address our mortality still rings true.

Compelling Story
Revisado: 09-16-24
This was a perfectly paced inside look on the many factors that led to Jackson’s historic appointment and tenure on the Supreme Court. What a truly extraordinary person, family, education and careful stewarding of a career. Helpful for anyone with high aspirations.

Historia
Originally published in 1953, Go Tell It on the Mountain was James Baldwin's first major work, based in part on his own childhood in Harlem. With lyrical precision, psychological directness, resonating symbolic power, and a rage that is at once unrelenting and compassionate, Baldwin chronicles a fourteen-year-old boy's discovery of the terms of his identity as the stepson of the minister of a Pentecostal storefront church in Harlem.

Searing truths, beautifully rendered

Can’t recommend Gay’s introduction or this brilliant reading highly enough. A moving addition to the canon.

Conventional wisdom holds that America has been a Christian nation since the Founding Fathers. But in One Nation Under God, historian Kevin M. Kruse argues that the idea of "Christian America" is nothing more than a myth - and a relatively recent one at that.

Not worth it
Revisado: 06-08-17
This was a disappointment. The book lacked the depth and analysis I was expecting for a topic where so much more is available, including a host of living potential interview subjects. There was a notable lack of compassion for why the country was so enamored by the notion of godliness, and scant attention paid to moderating influences. The reading was overly dramatic and distracting. I would skip this and head more toward something by Jeff Sharlet.
