What a story, enthralling from start to finish. I loved the changing narration personality. I think it added a lot to the book. Really gave you a feel for the characters you were reading about.

It took a little bit for me to get into it but once I did I thought it was excellent! If you don’t know the real life inspiration go read about the Essex. Although this book fiction it’s not far from reality.

I would love to see this book finished

McCullough is an excellent writer and it’s a shame that he chose not to finish this story. McCullough says at the end that he choose to stop at the time Roosevelt was the fully formed man we all know. I would argue that their is no such point in any man’s life and certainly not before something like war and the presidency.

I hope he picks it up and writes part 2. For now it’s a bit of a disappointment.

Nelson Kruger was excellent, he did a great job making some of the slower stretches of this book a bit better.

Expertly written but a pointless topic

As always Gladwell puts together a good book but I must say the topic for this one was a little pointless. Gladwell, like the bomber mafia he profiled, wishes that there would have been some way to end the war without the firebombing of Japan that would have also guaranteed victory and also not caused massive allied losses.

But the reality is no such technology existed and such technology has yet to win a war. Although it has proven useful in low intensity conflicts. However, as Gladwell has pointed out the technology is in part what has encouraged low Intensity conflicts.

Overall it’s just feels like there’s not much point to this introspection into America’s action in WW2.

Gladwell always makes you think....

Even if I sometimes disagree with the conclusions Gladwell draws he always makes me think and I appreciate that he always takes an analytical approach to problems rather that the emotional one frequently found on both sides of the political spectrum today.

Chris spares no detail in both his accounts of the operations he was involved in as well as the home life. A great listen for a wide variety of people.
