The main character is far more than deeply flawed. She goes completely off the tracks as the story progresses, and is not someone you can love. You want to look away, but cannot as her narrative slips down a slippery slope of what can only be described as an addictive obsession. Vividly sexual, and a fascinating description of the mind of a woman lost in her addiction, and willing to completely throw her good life away. It's disturbing in so many ways, but it keeps you listening until the last minute. A very good insight into obsession.

This story reminded me more than a little of "True Grit". Its a warm story with a strong, reasonable, and fearless main character. The story is never overdone, completely believable, and has a sense of decency that few such works provide. I highly recommend it.

I think that authors at King's level, and there are few, have a hard time living up to the expectations that are placed upon them due to their best works. This is not his best book, but it's very good and very entertaining. I went through it in about three days as it always kept me coming back. It is a very good crime noir novel, with interesting characters and a plot that makes you want to keep the audio on in your car long after you have reached your destination. The main character is very flawed, but you cannot help but cheer him on as he strives to follow his own code as a hitman with a conscience, trying to extricate himself from an impossible situation, and in the process being a man with a sense of decency. Had many other authors written this it would be seen in a much more positive light, but this is King, who can write like few others. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and it lingers in my mind. The narrator is soft-spoken, but I grew to like his voice, and it seemed appropriate for the character. This story was well worth almost 17 hours of listening.

The life of a long haul mover is naturally full of interesting stories from the road, and these are in the book. But Finn Murphy is not only a mover, but a man who has taken the injuries and insults of life, and translated them into the practical philosophies that any of us can use to make our own way. Most people don't like movers, they represent the stress of a major life change, and you just don't trust people with your stuff. Have you ever heard a good mover story? Finn always makes it a point to introduce himself and his crew, and reassure the client that they are professionals, and will do all they can to move the items safely and in a timely manner. He personalizes the job with names and faces rather than simply be objectified as "the Mover". Finn notes that we all have to much stuff, and will pay big bucks to move random junk that is not really needed, and could be donated and later replaced for less money. He also shows that the truck industry is truly "equal opportunity" His life is a clear demonstration that while we may fail sometimes, we can learn from mistakes, and build character by getting back on our feet. Finn is a well read man, who knows the human condition, and can write about it. And he closes his book with a story which you will never forget. Great narrator, great listen.

Stalin was without doubt one of the worst individuals to ever walk the planet. This volume gives a short and concise history of the man and his atrocities if you don't have the time and inclination to spend time with someone who was responsible for more death and destruction than than anyone but Mao in China. But it is time well spent to understand the horror of Communism, in a world where the brutalities of the so so distant past are being forgotten. Hitler's Germany was a paradise ( Except for Jews, Gypsies, Slavs, and the mentally disabled) in comparison to the Soviet Union that Lenin formed and Stalin later lead. There life was lived by all in terror and apprehension knowing that anyone , at any level, was subject to instant defamation and slow death by starvation, overwork in a freezing Gulag, or simply a bullet in the back of the head.

Another one of the Great Courses that educates and enlightens. This is a history course instructed by the brilliant Professor Edward t. O'Donnel that puts a laser focus on specific points in the national history that in retrospect became game changers on the American Scene. If you have a love of well presented American History this lecture series is an obvious choice.

In this series of well presented lectures Professor Stoler lectures with impressive logic that so much of what we think we know as taught in American Schools is at best half truths. An example is the belief that many of the first colonists came to the new world in order to have religious freedom. While that is true it was also true that many of these groups meant religious freedom to believe as they did, with the puritans as a wonderful example. Washington is revered as a great general, although he lost most of his battles. But he persevered, he kept the army together, and he inspired and lead a new nation. What are the real reasons we lost in Vietnam? These are some of the stories that need to be heard, if you care about American History.

This is a brilliant narrative of the first world war that truly paints a vivid picture of the causes of the war, and the horrendous carnage that resulted. It's a thought provoking book that brings home the waste and destruction brought on by pride and hubris. I consider the narrator Robin Sachs, to be one of the very best in this business. His voice and intonation are perfectly married with the text to leave a long and lasting impression.

One of the best to understand the man and the time

While there are some very good books about Custer in a crowded field, such as "Son of the Morning Star", " The Last Stand" and others, this book stands out as one of the best. Most works are clouded by the pre-set opinion of the author, and paint the man as a peerless hero, or a bloody glory seeking imbecile. Robert Utley does neither, and paints the picture of a man driven by ambition, patriotism, and possessed of a completely fearless nature, not unlike other Calvary Icons of his time. Custer was a fascinating man, and his story as well as that of the Seventh Calvary will be told for a long time to come. This is a great place to start, or continue a quest to understand the man. This is a great listen, with a great narrator.

This might be as close as you can come to the experience of the Marines in Afghanistan. The stories, and the courage of the Marines in combat will humble you as it did me. It will make you realize that there are still those men in this country who give their all, with no expectation of reward, and every chance of sudden and violent death. Thank God for the United States Marines.
