Interesting take on first contact.
Revisado: 10-15-24
This was a good story. The writing was pretty good. The characters were both likeable and unlikable. The story dragged a little in the middle with the bio lab on Paradise but the beginning and the ending where excellent. The story had interesting aspects of wilderness survival that I enjoyed. The characters were fairly consistent. There were no gaping plot holes which was very nice. Overall an interesting story with both adventure and intellectual curiosity. Well done.

Historia
On humanity's first extra-solar mission, the exploration vessel Magellan, or, as she prefers, "Maggie", discovers an alien artifact. Deciding that finding advanced alien life is too important to ignore, Captain Allison Ridgeway chooses to return to Earth while ordering her crew to reverse engineer technology far beyond anything back home. Meanwhile, at mission control, the governments struggle to maintain the existence of aliens a secret while also combating bureaucracy, the military industrial complex, and everyone else who wants a piece of what could skyrocket humanity into a new technological age.

Witty banter.
Revisado: 05-10-24
I really liked this story. While it was a little crunchier than I normally like my military Sci Fi, if you can turn a blind eye to the bumbling alien overlords, the rest of the yarn will have you belly laughing the whole way through. Nice and clean entertainment. However, when Felix leaves his internal comm on while he is trying to decide how best to seduce the exquisite Jacqueline, I couldn't decide if I wanted to cheer him on or die of embarrassment. Good stuff.

Historia
Sherlock Holmes is the greatest detective in literary history. For the first time since the death of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a new Holmes story has been sanctioned by his estate, whetting the appetites of fans everywhere. Information about the book will be revealed as deliberately as Holmes himself would unravel a knotty case, but bestselling novelist and Holmes expert Anthony Horowitz is sure to bring a compelling, atmospheric story to life.

Watson spends all his time moralizing.
Revisado: 06-06-23
It is seriously tedious. Every orphan in London is malnourished and dirty. I got it the first time. If I wanted to be preached at I would read Dickens although he has a much lighter and wittier touch. Your job Mr. Horowitz was to tell a good story about Sherlock Holmes, not bore me with Watson whining non stop.
Stay away from this one if you like Conan Doyle's style.

Good story well told.
Revisado: 10-27-22
The writing was quite good. I found the characters engaging. The plot was believable enough. No giant holes or blatant cheating.
P.S. Thanks to the guy who down voted the story claiming it was political and racist. Every time someone like that hates a story, chances are I will love it.
For the record, I found it neither. Like I said in the title, just a good story well told.

Historia
From "the master of alternate history" comes a new trilogy that reimagines a mid-20th century in which General MacArthur, without bothering to consult President Truman, detonates nuclear warheads in several Manchurian cities after China enters the Korean War. In his acclaimed novels of alternate history, Harry Turtledove has scrutinized the twisted soul of the 20th century, from the forces that set World War I in motion to the rise of fascism in the decades that followed.

Revisado: 09-16-22
I don't know if the author intentionally went for a retro feel to the story, but I found it really refreshing.
Beware the narrator's accent for the pilot though. It could drive a man to drink.
Overall, a very well done and enjoyable story.

Historia
For centuries, the world of Safehold, last redoubt of the human race, lay under the unchallenged rule of the Church of God Awaiting. The Church permitted nothing new - no new inventions, no new understandings of the world. What no one knew was that the Church was an elaborate fraud - a high-tech system established by a rebel faction of Safehold’s founders, meant to keep humanity hidden from the powerful alien race that had destroyed old Earth.

Interesting story about the advancement of warfare
Revisado: 05-31-22
Some reviewers complain the story moves too slowly. I did not find this to be so. I really enjoyed the detailed explanation of why characters made the choices they did.
Perhaps the biggest irony in the story is how Weber goes to great lengths to paint Clintahn as a bully and yet the feminist Nimbue is every ounce the bully Clintahn is and may be worse since Nimbue is not supposed to be insane like Clintahn is.

pretty cool. It does drone on at times and I did skip a few chapters but overall the story was good and entertaining.
Other reviewers claimed the book was political. That is not so. It is neither left nor right. It just focuses on the characters.

These stories are set in the familiar quasi-medieval worlds to which modern listeners are accustomed, and also stories rooted in the authentic myth-constructs of high antiquity, along with several that depend for their power on the juxtaposition of fantastic situations and terribly contemporary aspects of modern life on Earth. Together these stories make up a collection which provides reassuring proof of fantasy's eternal power in this technological age.
