Dismal ending to a less than “thrilling” series.

Weak final book in a less than exciting series. Horrible ending. I kept going back and re-listening to the last 5 chapters certain that I must have missed something. Nope. It is like Akart just gave up on the storyline and characters in this book. Very disappointing for someone who has purchased dozens of books from this author.

Horribly misleading biblical interpretation

I have not purchased one of Mark Goodwin’s books in many years due to really bad theological interpretations. I had hoped perhaps over the years he would study and improve. I was greatly disappointed. This series could be a stumbling block to understand what is actually written in Scripture.

We see the ‘Sarge’ character of the Boston Brahmin series reborn in Dean Winchester in “Behind the Gates”.

Dislike the sing-songish rhythm of the audible narrator. It makes this series difficult to listen and the low tone in which he speaks (almost like a whisper) difficult to hear.

Just when the series looked at an end..

Franklin Horton still found unexpected twists and turns in the story line that shows even more growth in the primary characters while setting us up for the 11th book in the series.

Kevin Pierce never disappoints as the voice actor/reader in Audible (the version I purchased).

Off the curve and over the cliff

Abruptly ended series as though the writer was behind on deadline to finish. One cannot help but feel gyped on the series purchase.

Vulgar language and unnecessary violence between characters serving no purpose and some even destroying the image of one character.

I have avoided purchasing Boyd Craven’ books for many years after listening to his early efforts. While the 3-star review reflects some slight growth as a writer I cannot help feel like his intended audience is 16-20 something males with ridiculously immature fantasies.

Kevin Pierce is always a good narrator, even when reading trash.

I suffered through the entire series hoping the story line and character development would get better. It did not.

This whole story could have been told in one book rather than being drug on with meaningless wordiness. It was written like a high school assignment requiring ‘X’ number of words with no substance being added.

First exposure to the author Tom Abrams

This book was a difficult listen for me due to the constant jumping around. If you have ADJD you’ll probably appreciate that it jumps about.

Book three was a real disappointment. It seemed even more disjointed and with extra characters just thrown in that added minimal or no value to the storyline.

Kevin Pierce does a great job. Truth be told I often purchase audiobooks just because he is the narrator. This series was one such instance.

Thought provoking novel illustrating the moral dilemmas facing ourselves as individuals, communities, a nation and as humans on a small planet filled with unnecessary political turmoils when real solutions to inevitabilities of nature require action.

This is book illustrates why you should care who grows your food.

Heartfelt and often heartbreaking story of the real life trials, frustrations, rewards and humility of a young and hopeful family farmer trying to change generations of farming and debt habit to save the family farm and be that valuable cream that rises to the top.

An outstanding book for those who seek to know their food, grow their food, or grow clean food in a clean, sustainable, and regenerative manner for others.

Above all, this is a tale of an American family, by no means average, but the soil at the roots of us all.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

If Prepper Fiction is on of the genre's you enjoy I think you too may recognize Goodwin's Ichabod as a mix of Boyd Craven's 'Good Fences' and Frank Horton's 'Legion of Despair'. While there is slight variance in themes, the sequence of events in the three books is nearly identical. The recommended change would be in having a more original story line.

Character development between 'Behold Darkness and Sorrow' and 'Ichabod' seems inconsistent and unrealistic at best. Some of the new characters introduced in 'Ichabod' would appear to have a better story to share than the original characters around whom this central story revolves.

Would you ever listen to anything by Mark Goodwin again?

I became a fan of Mark Goodwin's via his Economic Collapse trilogy. As he shifted to more faith based works I have become enormously disappointed. My disappoint is not because of the subject matter, but rather. because of the seeming ignorance displayed in his books about the book upon which his faith is based.

'Ichabod' emphasizes the removal of the Father's blessings from the USA because the nation strayed from His laws/commandments. Yet, Goodwin seems to have no foundational understanding whatsoever of the Father's laws/commandments via the actions of his central characters in this series.

I am undecided as to whether I will purchase any more of Mark Goodwin's Audible offerings. The quality of the past two series is not that of the economic collapse series. I feel as though 'Ichabod' was a rip-off of two other Audible offerings and that I wasted money on a cheap copy of other works. I am NOT suggesting Goodwin plagiarized. Rather, a lack of research and lack of imagination in Prepper Fiction in general leads to the retelling of the same story ad nauseam.

What about Kevin Pierce’s performance did you like?

Love Kevin Pierce as a narrator. He never disappoints.

Those seeking faith based fiction should beware of being led astray by the author's ignorance of the foundations of Christianity , especially in regard to the Law and the Prophets. There is a great deception in the modern Christian churches and Goodwin is, while perhaps unwittingly, leading others astray by entertaining and promoting this deception in his works of fiction.
