Historia
Around 950,000 years ago, a family of five walked along the beach and left behind the oldest family footprints ever discovered. For award-winning historian Simon Sebag Montefiore, these poignant, familiar fossils serve as an inspiration for a new kind of world history, one that is genuinely global, spans all eras and all continents, and focuses on the family ties that connect every one of us. In this epic, ever-surprising book, Montefiore chronicles the world’s great dynasties across human history to the people at the heart of the human drama.

A Monumental Work with Pros and Cons: the Bad Old Days
Once again Simon Sebag Montefiore leads his readers down a path usually untrodden, this time in analysing the history of the world, no less.
Pros: it covers most major cultures and important figures.
Cons: it covers most major cultures and important figures which means every part is only given a couple of moments of coverage.
The narration is excellent, with native speakers handling Asian pronunciations.

"Set in Kiev in 1911 during a period of heightened anti-Semitism, the novel tells the story of Yakov Bok, a Jewish handyman blamed for the brutal murder of a young Russian boy."
The main character is from Latvia which is where my paternal grandparents came from (in 1909) so this novel has a very special meaning for me.

Historia
In February 1944, in one of the most astonishing battles of World War II, a ragtag collection of British clerks, drivers, doctors, muleteers, and other base troops, stiffened by a few dogged Yorkshiremen and a handful of tank crews, managed to defeat a much larger and sophisticated contingent of some of the finest infantry in the Japanese army on their march toward India.

Historia
Few books have had such an impact as Wild Swans: a popular best seller and a critically acclaimed history of China that opened up the country to the world. Through the story of three generations of women in her own family - the grandmother given to the warlord as a concubine, the Communist mother, and the daughter herself - Jung Chang reveals the epic history of China's twentieth century. Breathtaking in its scope, unforgettable in its descriptions, this is a masterpiece that is extraordinary in every way.

Historical Tales that seem like a Novel

Historical Tales that seem like a Novel
Jung Chang recreates the story of her grandmother and her mother in an enchanting way that makes 1930s China seem like a fairy tale, despite the lowly status of women at the time. Stories of post revolutionary China range from absurd to disgusting, particularly about the needless great famine of 1959 which caused mass starvation and even cannibalism.

Qiu Xiaolong has written another insightful Inspector Chen mystery set in the changing world of Shanghai in the late 20th century. What used to be taboo now may be practiced ... or not, depending on the whims of the communist authorities.

Interesting Modern Chinese Detective Story
I was expecting a T'ang Dynasty Judge Dee type of mystery but have been delighted by a deft modern-day detective story set in Shanghai.
