So much good information
Revisado: 09-16-22
I'm 37 and I've been in therapy for my whole life and I'm pretty sure we could have figured out the root of some of my quirks a long time ago if I had read this book a decade ago 😆 Very accurate depiction of a type 1. I also learned many connections on how a type 1 can be born out of a type 4. and there is a chapter on key things to note in relationship with every other enneagram type, which I appreciate since the eneagram is a tool to get to know yourself and build healthy relationships with others.
I wish there was a more spiritual aspect to it or a chapter on how this plays out in a faith journey, but I guess that's for me and God to keep discovering on our own.

Silly but not hilarious
Revisado: 01-02-19
Funny, almost satirical stories of real life observations of humans.
Not as funny as some of his other books, but I still giggled louder than was appropriate, listening to this at my desk.

Historia
Chopin's heart is carried back to Warsaw in secret by his adoring sister. A woman must return to her native Poland in order to poison her terminally ill high school sweetheart, and a young man slowly descends into madness when his wife and child mysteriously vanish during a vacation and just as suddenly reappear. Through these brilliantly imagined characters and stories, interwoven with haunting, playful, and revelatory meditations, Flights explores what it means to be a traveler, a wanderer, a body in motion not only through space but through time.

Curious and beautifully written
Revisado: 10-24-18
The author's style has been described as a constellation, and I see now how accurate that is. Some chapters are short, some are long .Some stories intertwine, some story lines are never revisited.
Bu the writing, or the translation, is so gorgeous and visual. At times I get lost in the prose or the poetry of it and it happily distracts me from the fact that I don't know where this story is going.
But the theme is movement, and the book accomplishes movement in the way it skips, the way it flows, and the way she writes. I enjoyed it so much.
My only gripe would be that Julia reads every character in the same tone. Consistency is good, but there were times I did not even realize we had jumped from the stories/words of a woman to that of a man.
Since some chapters are only a sentence long, pay attention :)

Historia
Austen wrote, 'I am going to take a heroine whom no-one but myself will much like' and thus introduces the handsome, clever, rich - and flawed, Emma Woodhouse. Emma is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage; nothing however delights her more than matchmaking her fellow residents of Highbury. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected.

I wish every audiobook was this animated!
Revisado: 10-11-18
This telling of Emma was SO well done. It was acted out, the voices and tones were beleiveable. There were even added background noises like clanking of silverware at dinner, and horse hooves on cobblestone when they travel. It was so alive!
I love Jane Austen's feminists characters. I think Emma is one of my least favorite, mostly because I cannot relate. but I love the story and the way that it unfolds clearly and all your questions get answered.

Love and life are not black and white
Revisado: 08-30-18
I loved that this book placed me in so many peoples' shoes without me truly even noticing where I had been or where I was going.
The writing seems casual, but expertly done.
This story touched me so deeply, I actually stopped reading it twice. Just to take an emotional recovery break.
It reminded me that love and life are not black and white, and THAT is part of what makes them so so beautiful.

Historia
Kell is one of the last Travelers - magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes. As such, he can choose where he lands. There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there's Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. There's White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. And once upon a time, there was Black London...but no one speaks of that now.

Magical Surreal story lines
Revisado: 12-20-17
Magical realism, or fantasy, it could be. But its also just a good action novel with good guys, and bad guys, life lessons, loveable and hateable characters. I liked it, and I think it would make for a coll movie. very visually stimulating characters, cities and descriptions.

Historia
Four US Navy SEALS departed one clear night in early July 2005 for the mountainous Afghanistan-Pakistan border for a reconnaissance mission. Their task was to document the activity of an al Qaeda leader rumored to have a small army in a Taliban stronghold. Five days later, only one of those Navy SEALS made it out alive. This is the story of the only survivor of Operation Redwing, SEAL team leader Marcus Luttrell, and the extraordinary firefight that led to the largest loss of life in American Navy SEAL history.

Intense
Revisado: 08-19-17
I was hooked on this story, and sometimes felt guilty for it.
The reading and acting were good, and I appreciate that its read with a southern accent, since it was written by a Texan.
At first, I didn't understand why he was putting so much time and detail into Seal training, but then I understood that it's the only way to grasp the rest of the story.
I appreciate history, and war stories. I found the Seal training stories to be so interesting.
I found the battle stories to be gut wrenching. I think that Marcus Lutrell is the only person who could have delivered the story in a way that could touch you the way it does. My heart broke several times.

Historia
The powerful debut novel from Alan Brennert, Moloka’i tells the story of Rachel Kalama, a seven-year-old Hawaiian girl who contracts leprosy and is quarantined on the island of Moloka’i during the 1890s. Separated from her family and forced to grow up in the leper colony of Kalaupapa, Rachel experiences intense isolation. But she remains strong, finding moments of joy, and even love. Rich in Hawaiian history, this novel proves itself a stellar piece of historical fiction.

Excellent piece of historical fiction
Revisado: 05-13-17
I enjoyed this book.
I thought it was over, twice. But it turned out that the parts that remained were worth the story being longer.
The narrator was able to pronounce all of the names and locations appropriately, which always lends to the story. But the inflections were subdued. not quite monotone, but never heard the fear or the love or the confusion in the narrators voice, so it made the story SEEM flat.
But looking back on it, the characters had depth and there were passionate moments and subjects and experiences throughout.
I appreciate that there are quite a few pieces of history in the book. I love historical fiction!

Historia
A wonderful tale of a young man’s coming of age, Zorba the Greek has been a classic of world literature since it was first translated into English in 1952 and made into an unforgettable movie with Anthony Quinn. Zorba, an irrepressible, earthy hedonist, sweeps his young disciple along as he wines, dines, and loves his way through a life dedicated to fulfilling his copious appetites. Zorba is irresistible in this charming audio production by veteran narrator George Guidall.

It seems like it should be a more exciting story. Perhaps it eas the reading that made it seem so dry. I couldn't really connect with the characters.

"It began as a mistake." By middle age, Henry Chinaski has lost more than 12 years of his life to the U.S. Postal Service. In a world where his three true, bitter pleasures are women, booze, and racetrack betting, he somehow drags his hangover out of bed every dawn to lug waterlogged mailbags up mud-soaked mountains, outsmart vicious guard dogs, and pray to survive the day-to-day trials of sadistic bosses and certifiable coworkers.

snarky and concise
Revisado: 01-18-17
I enjoyed the story. It's smart asses and to the point. Its a very real and dry depiction of life. if you stripped all the needless emotions and got the to bare bones of it...
the performance was okay. Hank was believeable , all the women characters were terrible, and some of the accents were bizarre.
