Not one of his better books

I've read quite a few of Hugh Howie's books and, generally, love them. This one wasn't up to the quality of his later books like Dust and the Shell Collector. It had its moments and the ending was interesting, but some parts of the story I couldn't buy.

It's a fairly good book if you like a lot of details and lots of technical information. I found myself tuning out quite often.

Tara Westover weaves a great story about growing up in surreal conditions. Absolutely excellent narration.

A well told story. I'm never much on the isolation in space kind of book but this one is better than most. The story has unusual twists and the pace keeps moving. Ryan McCarthy had some really good moments and I thought his performance was well done. I think I'm becoming a Hugh Howey fan.

Honestly, I don't give out 5 star reviews often. How many of us imagine a grand adventure and find out the reality of it is tough. That's what this book is about. He had the desire, he was organized...the only thing he lacked was experience. He went into the adventure with his eyes wide open, understanding his strengths and weaknesses. He overcame almost all of them. The story is well told...sometimes funny, sometimes cringe-worthy, always honest. It's not bloated at all...moving along at a good clip. To me, a great book is when it leaves you wanting to read more and that's where this book left me. Highly enjoyable...highly recommended.

I really enjoyed the Water Knife but the first half, I really didn't connect much with the characters or where the book was going. Somewhere around the middle that changed. The book exploded and the story and characters really began to take shape. It's a tough book...well written about tough people in really tough times. It weaves between the characters and it left you guessing all the way until the end. The narration was very well done. Almarie's portrayal of voices was quite believable.

This story has haunted me more than I thought it would. I like these stories about people walking to find themselves. About her life, Cheryl doesn't pull any punches...at times extremely blunt, especially about how she thinks of love and relationships. At times I felt the back story was, at times, long winded. Here, at the end, I find myself thinking about it a lot, about Paul and all the people she met along the way, making me pause before starting the next book (which is unusual). I have a feeling that there's more to this story.

It was a great book, well thought out and unusual...

(spoiler) until the end. I felt that the author rushed through the ending. There were so many possibilities and they chose the simple way out. Damn.

I had a difficult time connecting to the characters. I thought their emotional interconnectedness was weak and, while the author tried to make the case that someone was devastated by the loss of someone, she barely made the case: you were just supposed to believe it, I guess. The story was believable but, mostly, thin except at the end where things got interesting. I'm glad I stuck it out...I had thought about putting the book down many times before I got there, though.
