Fun Read
Revisado: 09-20-24
After starting to read this in Kindle with text-to-speech from Libby, I decided to listen to the Audible version. I do prefer the narrator, Alexandra Harris to the TTS. It was a good read.
It has been a week or so since I finished the read. A little case of COVID got in the way of reviewing reads. Still, I do remember this fondly and look forward to more in the series as I can buy them. In the case of fantasy beings this was a different take. It was fun!

Nancy Warren's Always Fun!
Revisado: 05-31-24
Hollis McCarthy narrates this fun book. So far, I have enjoyed every one of Nancy Warren's books. So much so that I forgot to review this one and can only say it was fun like all the others. You see, what happens is I finish one and order the next right that minute and get lost in the next adventure.
As always, the only problem I have with cozy mysteries is the murder. Why? And the witches or vampires never cause it, just a grumbling human. Aw, well, it gives us something for the book club or knitting club to solve besides how many stitches or pages we've done.

What the hex is going on? Life at Cardinal Woolsey's knitting and yarn shop is about as smooth as shop owner Lucy's knitting. In other words, lumpy, tangled, and prone to disaster. Much like her spell-casting. But things get worse when her cousin and shop assistant Violet shows alarming symptoms of a hex. Who would do such a thing? Was it the guy from Witch Date she blew off? Or is Lucy the real target?

Cozy Vampire Knitting Club Mystery
Revisado: 05-08-24
One more fun Vampire Knitting Club! I am sad to know that there are many of these left. The story continues, and I feel that saying much more becomes a spoiler. It was fun figuring out if plans would come to fruition or if another murder could be solved.
I love Nancy Warren's dry humor in her writing. Her reader, Sarah Zimmerman, knows how to vocalize it. If I didn't have a lot of other books, library books, to read, I would be set to listen to the next of the VKC.
If you get the chance and need a fun, cozy book or series, try Ms. Warren's.

My Favorite Series
Revisado: 05-03-24
After reading serious books, I like to take a reading vacation. The Vampire Knitting Club is a fun place to go. Not your usual vampires. These are sophisticated, mostly non-neck-biting types. They meet in the original owner's residence above and below the yarn shop. They knit. Anyone who knows me understands my affection for the wooly soft stuff.
It is the original owner's granddaughter who owns the store now. Her grandmother is now a vampire. It was the only way to save her life. But she can't be seen in the shop. It really upsets the customers to see their favorite yet dead yarn expert walking around.
Each and every volume of this series is fun and wrapped around some murder. Don't doubt for a minute the pointy needles are harmless. But they do remind one of the canine teeth, don't they?
Add to all that, the grandmother and granddaughter are witches. Well, the granddaughter didn't know that until she inherited the shop when her grandmother supposedly passed. Now she is learning to knit and to 'witch.' In this particular volume, she is learning about her athame. Dagger.
Sarah Zimmerman narrates the Audible version I was reading/listening to. She isn't too irritating, but her attitude seems a bit too high society for the main character, but you get used to it. At least you don't get lost. And the author writes a wonderful story and keeps you engaged and wanting more.
I have already finished and started number 12. These books are a bit of a drug of fun for me. I hope you all get to read them.

Historia
This is Austen's first published novel, from 1851, which she wrote under the pseudonym "A Lady". The story is about Elinor and Marianne, two daughters of Mr. Dashwood by his second wife. They have a younger sister, Margaret, and an older half-brother named John. When their father dies, the family estate passes to John, and the Dashwood women are left in reduced circumstances. The novel follows the Dashwood sisters to their new home, a cottage on a distant relative's property, where they experience both romance and heartbreak.

Not For Me, Now
Revisado: 09-30-23
I know others will see my rating and be quite disgusted. But I read all the Thomas Hardy books in my twenties, and I think I got this romantic type of male-dominated society books out of my system. The writing is musical, presenting a nice break in plain talk and low vocabulary flow.
I wonder if I had a more modern, popular reader if I would have loved it more? I just didn't enjoy Victoria McGee's interpretation much. /
Back in the day, and we don't have to go back as far as Jane Austin's time, how about the era of Billie Jean King? Getting a wealthy man was the main goal for a female. Even when I read the Thomas Hardy books, I still thought that way. It was taught to me by my church, family, and society, but now, having lived 73 years, I think all of that was a waste. Women should have spent as much time growing our minds and independent abilities as menfolk.
Still, reading historical novels reminds us of a time gone by. Different thoughts, fashions, and inventions prevailed. Mostly, this book makes me thankful we live now.

Historia
The Appalachian Trail trail stretches from Georgia to Maine and covers some of the most breathtaking terrain in America - majestic mountains, silent forests, sparking lakes. If you’re going to take a hike, it’s probably the place to go. And Bill Bryson is surely the most entertaing guide you’ll find. He introduces us to the history and ecology of the trail and to some of the other hardy (or just foolhardy) folks he meets along the way - and a couple of bears. Already a classic, A Walk in the Woods will make you long for the great outdoors (or at least a comfortable chair to sit and read in).

As Good As the First Read
Revisado: 04-27-23
Below is the review from my first reading. An actual paper book. This time it was the Audible version. I didn't realize I had read it before. Rob McQuay's narration was brilliant! I enjoyed this read as if it were my first time, obviously.
* * *
I haven't felt this way about a book in a while. I wanted it to continue. Bill Bryson wrote with such a light touch that you felt you were walking beside him. I loved how he threw in well-researched information not only about the AT but about the ecology and history of people.
I may want to read this again someday, so I will have to go out and buy my own copy. This one is a BookCrossing copy that will soon find someone else to thrill. 297-4877803 To find out where it lands.

Male-Heavy
Revisado: 05-17-22
Another reread. I needed something while waiting for my next Outlander read. I figured with all the stress of my cataract surgery, and I needed something in the fantasy realm.
I did enjoy the book, but I kept remembering the ending and hated reliving it. I don't think I would have been a good candidate to read this as a kid.
Besides the ending, I had a hard time with this whole series is the lack of good fleshed-out female characters. Hermoine was okay, but there weren't enough good girls or women. It was very male-heavy.
I may be reading the next one and making it to the series' end, but it will not be soon.

When the Knight Bus crashes through the darkness and screeches to a halt in front of him, it's the start of another far from ordinary year at Hogwarts for Harry Potter. Sirius Black, escaped mass-murderer and follower of Lord Voldemort, is on the run - and they say he is coming after Harry. In his first ever Divination class, Professor Trelawney sees an omen of death in Harry's tea leaves... But perhaps most terrifying of all are the Dementors patrolling the school grounds, with their soul-sucking kiss...

Male Heavy
Revisado: 02-21-22
I'm on my second reading of this book. I read the actual hardback the first time. Now the eyes wouldn't be able to. So I chose to listen to Jim Dale read the book to me. For the most part, he is a good narrator, but ugh, for the females. He makes them sound like he's making fun of them. And he seems to use the voice of Hagrid for another character making it a bit confusing.
Still, I am raising my rating from three stars to four as I found this more pleasant this time. I don't know if it is my interpretation of the book versus how Jim Dale portrayed it. I just remembered this book as scary and dark. Yet this time, I found it lighter and happier. Maybe I knew where it was going, so I didn't shake in fear?
As with the first two books, I find them male-heavy, which is disappointing because it is a female author. Seeing that she chose to be more acceptable to males by having a male pseudonym makes me admire her less. But maybe now, she might not choose that path.
Since I have the collection on Audible, I plan to continue listening. I do wish there was another actor to play the females. Still, how many can say, "Buckbeak's back" multiple times without tripping over their tongues? Jim Dale got points for that!

Good Bedtime Read
Revisado: 02-11-22
This is my second reading of the series. I noticed I haven't changed my star rating. I'm still only giving it three stars. Jim Dale is part of the reason for this rating. His voice is suitable for all the males in the book but is horrid with the females. I do feel the grumpiness of Professor Minerva McGonagall and the hyper-energy of Hermoine. But for the most part, Mister Dale's females sound demeaning and whiny.
But things I love about the book are the basilisk and the phoenix. These are two very fantastic beasts. Oh, and I love the idea of a diary that talks to you from someone else. I don't like the Tom Riddle part or Voldemort parts, but I suppose we need the bad guy. I did like getting to know Tom's back story.
When I read the tome about a decade ago, I thought it was a slower slog. This book was over quickly. And for these stressful days having something I know and enjoy, helps the sleep come faster at night.
I've already started book three. And I remember how each book gets darker. Maybe by the end, I won't use these as bedtime books.

Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

Male Heavy
Revisado: 02-07-22
I bought and read the hardback over ten years ago. Somehow my collection went away. Did I sell it before moving? I can't remember. But I remember enjoying the story and the movies. But one thing I hated about the whole enterprise was how male-heavy it was. With it written by a woman, you would think that she could have brought it around to a female point of view instead of making fun of the most brilliant girl in the room and making McGonagle mean.
I listened to this Audible version because I needed a light read for bedtime. I've been reading some pretty heavy non-fiction during the day that I knew I couldn't read before bed.
The narrator, Jim Dale, did a reasonably decent job of most of the voices. But he was not good at the female voices. As seems to be the case, males doing female voices always sound like they are making fun of the females.
All in all, though, it did make going to sleep easier. I knew where the story was going, so it soothed me to sleep.
