I have never before panned a book.
Now, to my unease and irritation, I must.
Often I will skim books I don’t find engaging, but with this book, I skipped chapters.
A WWII buff, it took me the first half of trudging along, drowning in battalion names, numbers, etc., to realized that this wasn’t going to be a good book...so the skimming began...hoping to find some kernel of info that would engage me.
Finally, the last chapters of his reunion with his wife were of some interest..

I am always on the lookout for personal accounts of anyone who was in active battles in the European sector in WWII, from any participant from any country involved.
This is as good as any I have found.
I’m not sure how I found it, but am so pleased that I did..

Historia
In 1941 a 31-year-old Frenchwoman, a young mother born to privilege and known for her beauty and glamour, became the leader of a vast intelligence organization - the only woman to serve as a chef de résistance during the war. Strong-willed, independent, and a lifelong rebel against her country’s conservative, patriarchal society, Marie-Madeleine Fourcade was temperamentally made for the job. No other French spy network lasted as long or supplied as much crucial intelligence. Fourcade was captured twice by the Nazis - and both times she managed to escape.

Always listen to the offered sample before buying
Revisado: 04-26-19
As a teacher, it goes against my grain to be harshly critical of anyone making an honest effort to succeed.
But, if I am to give an honest review of this audiobook, I must.
An excellent reader may make a book more interesting than it really is, but I doubt it. A poor reader can ruin any book.
Some readers don’t read the book, they act it. This is the unfortunate case here. I think, with a good reader, this book would have been a success.
As it was, I tried three times to listen to it , but simply could not take more than about 30 minutes total, listened to at intervals, hoping each time that I had been wrong.
So, my conclusion is that for a successful audiobook, the book and the reader are equally responsible for its success.
This is the first audiobook in my library that I have not given rave reviews, and I have listened to at least 30.

Historia
Richard Freiherr von Rosen was a highly decorated Wehrmacht soldier and outstanding panzer commander. After serving as a gunlayer on a Pz.Mk.III during Barbarossa, he led a company of Tigers at Kursk. Later he led a company of King Tiger panzers at Normandy and in late 1944 commanded a battle group (12 King Tigers and a flak company) against the Russians in Hungary in the rank of junior, later senior lieutenant (from November 1944, his final rank). Only 489 of these King Tiger tanks were ever built.

This is a well-written and exceptionally well read audiobook.
I came upon it while browsing.
Always interested in first accounts by the enemy of the war from their eyes, this more than filled the bill.
Anyone with an interest in WWII will enjoy this much as I did.
It is very, day by day, you are there, story of a young man who spent WWII in a Tiger tank, fighting Russians.
There little talk of the whys of the war, but a you are there on the many battle fields he was in.
The book gives a riveting account of what carpet bombing really is and what it does. Having read of the trauma so many German soldiers suffered in their wild flight to escape through the Falaise gap, here it is, as graphic as to give one the unvarnished truth of what Hell is like.
The author was 17 when the war started so I probably shouldn’t be as I was irritated at his whining about his treatment after the war. But, the book as a whole is a treasure for anyone who wants to know what fighting a long and terrible war in a fearsome Tiger tank was exactly like.

Historia
Here is a gripping account of the major postwar trial of the Nazi hierarchy in World War II. The Nuremberg Trial brilliantly recreates the trial proceedings and offers a reasoned, often profound examination of the processes that created international law. From the whimpering of Kaltenbrunner and Ribbentrop on the stand to the icy coolness of Goering, each participant is vividly drawn.

Excellent read
Revisado: 04-06-19
This is a thorough, incredibly well-researched book. It is outstanding in all ways.
As more a fan of well-written WWII histories than a scholar, I found myself skimming through sections that told me more than I wanted to know about certain facts and backgrounds. But, as a story of the Nuremberg Trial, it was fascinating in all respects.
After reading it, I had a satisfied feeling that I knew all of interest, and that was 30 hours , that I wanted to learn.
The British reader was outstanding, and the book, written by Brits, had, at times, an understandable slant towards things, British, was interesting but not to a fault.
It’s probably the only book one needs to read about this subject to feel they have the full story about what was a unique and fascinating moment in world history.

Historia
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

Historia
In 1945, after his capture at the end of the Second World War, Hermann Göring arrived at an American-run detention center in war-torn Luxembourg, accompanied by 16 suitcases and a red hatbox. The suitcases contained all manner of paraphernalia: medals, gems, two cigar cutters, silk underwear, a hot water bottle, and the equivalent of $100,000,000 in cash. Hidden in a coffee can, a set of brass vials housed glass capsules containing a clear liquid and a white precipitate: potassium cyanide. Joining Göring in the detention center were the elite of the captured Nazi regime....

Historia
Like many Germans, Berlin schoolboy Erwin Bartmann fell under the spell of the Zeitgeist cultivated by the Nazis. Convinced he was growing up in the best country in the world, he dreamt of joining the Leibstandarte, Hitler's elite Waffen SS unit. Tall, blond, blue-eyed, and just 17-years-old, Erwin fulfilled his dream on Mayday 1941, when he gave up his apprenticeship at the Glaser bakery in Memeler Strasse and walked into the Lichterfelde barracks in Berlin as a raw, volunteer recruit.

I’m not sorry I bought this book. His trials and tribulations were interesting..
But, Hitler’s favorite bully boys never change..,
But, they manage to skirt around their multiple sins against mankind,,,
The author seems to hardly know who Hitler was.
He loved being a Hitler Youth, but really was too busy freezing in Russia, and telling shocking behaviors by the Russians, to know anything about politics....
There was never any mention of the Einzatsgruppen ( forgive my spelling),the ghouls who systematically murdered all Russian civilians they came into contact with in their push into Russia..peasants..men, women and children...so, I’m still on my quest to find any traces of S S men who were not monstrous ..or have any hint of regret or remorse for their atrocities..

Among the best..
Revisado: 12-15-18
This book is marvelous in all ways. Having been written many years after the fact, With newly released archives, it is a grand edition to add to the ,”you are there”, quality.
Reading both sides of a battle as seen and lived by the rivals, Beevor deserves enormous credit for adding greatly to what we had read earlier.
The reader is excellent. His efforts at imitating the manner speech of the main characters are most successful with Churchill and Monty.
And Patton is his best American voice. Patton would like that.
