Historia
The collapse of The Flow, the interstellar pathway between the planets of the Interdependency, has accelerated. Entire star systems - and billions of people - are becoming cut off from the rest of human civilization. This collapse was foretold through scientific prediction...and yet, even as the evidence is obvious and insurmountable, many still try to rationalize, delay and profit from, these final days of one of the greatest empires humanity has ever known.

This whole series is highly entertaining with fun characters and an engaging premise. I've listened to it twice now and it hasn't gotten old. Always enjoy Will Wheaton's readings of Scalzi novels.

Historia
Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

fun storytelling
Revisado: 10-11-24
One of the best things about audio books is that it seems the format frees up authors to tell stories at their natural length rather than to make everything a standard novel or, much more rarely, a short story. This was a fun listen, well narrated. Especially since it's free, sort of a no-brainer if you enjoy Scalzi books like I do.

Historia
Outside Los Angeles, a driver pulls up to find a young woman sitting on a large black box. She offers him $200,000 cash to transport her and that box across the country, to Washington, DC. But there are rules: He cannot look inside the box. He cannot ask questions. He cannot tell anyone. They must leave immediately. He must leave all trackable devices behind. As these eccentric misfits hit the road, rumors spread on social media that the box is part of a carefully orchestrated terror attack intended to plunge the USA into civil war.

Doesn't rise to the level of the John Dies at the End series but, for me, few books do. Highly entertaining, good plot, fun characters. As always, Jason Pargin is the master of the hilarious random detail that rings perfectly true.

Historia
Rufus Leung Gresham, future Earl of Greshambury and son of a former Hong Kong supermodel has a problem: the legendary Gresham Trust has been depleted by decades of profligate spending, and behind all the magazine covers and Instagram stories manors and yachts lies nothing more than a gargantuan mountain of debt. The only solution, put forth by Rufus’s scheming mother, is for Rufus to attend his sister’s wedding at a luxury eco-resort, a veritable who’s-who of sultans, barons, and oligarchs, and seduce a woman with money.

Best yet :)
Revisado: 09-16-24
In addition to the usual vicarious romp through the world's most fascinating destinations, Kevin Kwan crafts his best characters yet in this perfectly paced novel. He also offers a nuanced, light-handed analysis of the ethics of pleasure and privilege. As a fan of Kevin Kwan's from way back, I enjoyed the references to his hometown, especially Rothko Chapel.
I thought this version was lovely to listen to. The narrator has a beautiful voice and emotes well. She obviously enjoys hamming it up as Lady Arabella who is described as sounding over-the-top upper crust British.

Not enough of some things, too much of others
Revisado: 09-08-24
It's a shame because there's some potential in the characters and concepts but there's way too much exposition here and it slows the story waaaaay down. If 1/2 the words could be edited out, you'd have something. I got annoyed and had to stop listening.

Thought this was great and really enjoyed it. if I had read this while in the target age group, it would have been my favorite book. Sean Stewart has a lot of even better books like Perfect Circle and Mockingbird that I read once upon a time as actual physical books and would love to listen to again, Audible (hint, hint). Narration of this series is excellent.

So glad to be reading this under-appreciated author again. Would love to see more of his books available on Audible. Though I am far from the target age group for this book, I fully enjoyed it. The performance and the soundscape created for it were first-rate.

I'm glad I listened to this series. Author takes his time in places, mostly in the third book, but the characters are compelling, the writing is good, and the philosophy is agreeable. Great job on the part of the narrator.

Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

The hero of John Kennedy Toole's incomparable, Pultizer Prize–winning comic classic is one Ignatius J. Reilly, an obese, self-absorbed, hapless Don Quixote of the French Quarter, whose half-hearted attempts at employment lead to a series of wacky adventures among the lower denizens of New Orleans.

Me wishing things were different...
Revisado: 11-22-23
It pains me to say it but either this book hasn't aged well or my tastes have changed since I originally read and loved it. Or both? For as long as possible, I was trying to blame the poor narrator. He does spend the first several chapters randomly cycling through various Southern accents, often touching on three or four in the course of one sentence of dialog, groping around in search of the New Orleans accent accurately described in the first chapter. Ultimately, I have to admit that the narrator has his work cut out for him voicing so many flat stereotypes repeating their catch phrases over and over again.
It's a huge shame because there's a lot to love about this book, especially when Toole sticks with the main characters and plot line instead of rolling around in deep piles of tiresome Levy family drama or fake gay local color. It really could have been a masterpiece with about 1/3 of the fluff edited out.
