Historia
Alexei Navalny began writing Patriot shortly after his near-fatal poisoning in 2020. It is the full story of his life: his youth, his call to activism, his marriage and family, his commitment to challenging a world super-power determined to silence him, and his total conviction that change cannot be resisted—and will come. Patriot is Navalny’s final letter to the world: a moving account of his last years spent in the most brutal prison on earth; a reminder of why the principles of individual freedom matter so deeply; and a rousing call to continue the work for which he sacrificed his life.

He stayed unchanged through it all
Revisado: 11-02-24
Meaning the book, while important to his legacy, can get a little monotonous. And why in the world did they not pick a russian narrator?! That bothered me the whole time.
Feel for and respect the guy and his cause and passion but as a book, it is not very entertaining. I just got done goolging the rest of his story. The book ends before his story does.
Anytime I get negative or in a "poor me" mood, I think I will remember all he went through and how insanely positive he stayed through it all. His level of hope and optimism was off the charts.

Historia
The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family’s tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

A lot to process in all the best ways
Revisado: 05-14-23
I wasnt sure what I was getting into with this but you hear so much about this book and author so after being impressed with Demn Copperhead, I dove in.
As for the story itself, if you want one that hits on social, political and/or religion, she's got all 3 going from the perspective of 5 people (6 really but Tata Prize doesnt have a voice) each of which have lots of reasons to question what they are told to believe about all 3. From how women are treated (its the 60s), to how inconsistent the word of god can feel, to how Governments work (or dont) to how most of us just keep living our lives regardless of it all, there is just so much to process in this book. I imagine I will be thinking about it for awhile.
And if none of that is really your thing, it is still a great story about family. 4 sisters and their parents navigating life and the shifting relationships over time.
I really liked how it switches perspective per chapter, and though it was the same narrator the whole time, you could hear the subtle differences and felt like it was 5 different people. It might have been good to use a different person for each one, but they didnt and it worked.

I dont know if I can get past it...
Revisado: 04-23-23
I am in Chapter 17, been listening all day while I do chores, and I just am not sure I can keep going. There are some points where it seems like it could "get good", but 17 chpaters in and Im mostly upset that I got tricked into a book written by someone that needed an outlet for her abusive father making her hate all men, and her clear negative feelings about how COVID went down (She never actually uses the presidents name but, we arent idiots!). I am all for people having a lens and opinion, but come on, not one decent male person exists. From Teen to Elders, all men are abusive, rapists? Even teachers? In the post-COVID age, teachers cant get away with that and teens mostly know better. I am too annoyed to finish it at the moment.

This is his story, or, rather, stories - lots of them, and all gut-punchingly hilarious, from that first far reach into a girl's tight jeans to turning forty with a cataclysmic party. In between you’ll hear about acid trips, threesomes, Nazi skinheads, his band Anal Chinook (Inuit for “warm wind”), Martians in northern Canada, throwing pedophiles in jail, dinner with the Clash, what happens when you crash Bill Maher's show wasted, and the true story of Vice magazine.

If you can sift through all the sex stories,..
Revisado: 07-29-22
I actually did really like this and agree it is funny. I laughed out loud in many public places while listening to this one. I would just caution those considering spending a credit, there is a lot of him talking about having sex in it. Probably 1/2 the book if you divided it out. I dont mind sex stories and scenes, but there didnt seem to be much point to it, other than to tell you about it. Not sure if we are supposed to be impressed or what the point was. They are graphic and and I am pretty sure I can use the word "nasty" and not be inaccurate.
Still though, it was funny and interesting. I dont regret a thing. I bought it with zero idea who he is, and I am still not sure I understand his claim to fame to be honest. Apparently you dont need to in this case.

If your a fan, you have to
Revisado: 05-23-22
As long time fans, when this came out, just to support him I had to buy it. It is good, most of it wont surprise us fans since we know he is very much about his family, a little cocky and willing to do whatever it takes to make it, which it seems he has. The only let down was no mention of The Pete and Sebastian show. I just dont get why he hides this piece of his work. He never mentions it in interviews, Ive seen him live twice, nothing there either, and now in the book, not even a sentence. I personally would love to see the Pete and Sebastian tour! I just dont get it
There are a lot of unknown nuggets in it even if you are a fan and follower. I will never forget the part about how he met Lana, the body fat percentage requirement she had. They are both so Hollywood!
The books is good overall and its funt to hear him read it.

Kept me listening but not passionately
Revisado: 03-03-19
The 2 voices used depending on whose narrative we area in made this book happen for me. Had it just been one or the other, I doubt I would have stuck with it. I have Dr. Shield's voice in my head for days now though! Dont expect a big bang ending, but, if your looking for a decent twist and turn, psychological game playing type story, this works.

Not just another fitness book
Revisado: 10-27-18
I know it doesnt market itself as "just another fitness book" but, they never do and still always are. This one has 1 chapter on diet, and 1 on exercise on exercise. Only. The rest is a lot of information pulled from all over on things you can do to feel better to best.
This book does not focus on fitness goals, scale numbers or feats of strength, it asks you to get off the hamster wheel of traditional approaches to these things and look at yourself individually, your habits, your life, and decided where you can make space to make small adjustments to feel better. No matter how you feel now, Rock star or Rock bottom. He even OKs wine and Cannibis, for those that can control the use and in moderation of course but, where have you seen that green light in a fitness book before! This one is real life stuff.
I never finish these types of books, usually get the gist of it pretty quick, eat less and well, move often and vigorously, rinse and repeat. That is not my real life. This one, I not only finished, I am going to by a print copy for reference. There is a lot in it, I can't do it all at once!

Not just for Jesus
Revisado: 10-27-18
The narrator almost sounds like a robot programmed to read, and that may be true. The book also talks about God and quotes scripture a lot, if you cant get past that, skip this. However, as someone who usually can't get past it, I tried it anyway as it was recommended by "law of attraction" type leaders. If you can mentally replace the word god with what ever you chose, energy, universe, etc...the scripture quoted actually does line right up with the law of attraction principles and kind of blows your mind. I almost returned it due to the narrator and biblical vibe out the door, but, I ended up listening to it all the way through and when Im struggling with the unknown future, I have pressed go on this one again and found it helpful.

Historia
Winter lasts most of the year at the edge of the Russian wilderness, and in the long nights, Vasilisa and her siblings love to gather by the fire to listen to their nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, Vasya loves the story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon. Wise Russians fear him, for he claims unwary souls, and they honor the spirits that protect their homes from evil. Then Vasya’s widowed father brings home a new wife from Moscow. Fiercely devout, Vasya’s stepmother forbids her family from honoring their household spirits, but Vasya fears what this may bring.

narrator excellent. story average

the narrator saves this story. It starts strong so between that and her accents, you get far enough into it not to want to stop when it fizzles a bit at the late middle/end. decent story though.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

So bored
Revisado: 09-23-17
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Im not sure I will finish this book. I only have 3 hours left but, I just dont care. The Scooby-Doo jokes might be funny if they werent actually acting like a bunch of "nosey kids" from that show, that is about the depth of the characters here. This far into the book I should care what happens but I just dont.
I do love this narrator though. I think he is why I hung in as long as I did.
Has 14 turned you off from other books in this genre?
No. But no more from this Author for sure!
What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?
His voice lends itself well to sarcasm and humor. I have listened to him in other, better, books so, it was familiar.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
bored. disappointed. Annoyed at how obvious certain things were, how shallow others were.
Any additional comments?
I would return it but, I feel like I do that too often, I made a choice, Im going to live with it.
