I would have been willing to listen to more of this series, but the voice of the narrator subtracts substantially from the enjoyment. Women sound silly, and the voice of the main character is annoyingly simpering.

After listening to these first five Lord Wimsey books, it’s easy to understand the staying power of Sayer’s stories. Her descriptions of the period between the World Wars is brilliant. These hours were a pleasure.

O’Farrell’s “idle speculations” weave a story rich in detail & moving in its subject. Her work here and in “The Marriage Portrait”, the only books of hers with which I’m familiar, are a wonder in the way she extracts small details from history to tell fascinating stories. Her prose is a bit overdone at times, resulting in repetition that draws attention to itself. But this quibble in no way detracts from a truly remarkable talent. I’ll be anticipating her next book.

With all the hallmarks of Horowitz’s considerable skill, this book is, overall, a pleasure. I will confess to getting a little impatient toward the end—felt a bit deep in the weeds. It has a more serious tone, as well. But good writing, good pacing, and a rather complicated plot make for a good experience in the end.

Lawhon does remarkable work here in bringing to life the story of Martha Ballard who was, in fact, a midwife in the late 18th-early 19th centuries. I appreciated the historical detail about, not just midwifery during that period, but the judicial system in the colonies. I do think the narration could use more vocal inflection. It was a bit wearing at times. The author’s note at the end—in her own voice—was a delight.

A new series for me, which I enjoyed beginning to end. One of the pleasurable parts of the experience of a detective mystery like this is the introduction to a part of the world about which I had absolutely no knowledge—and woven into a very good plot, I’m heading into the second book of the series very soon.

My first book by this author. Didn’t quite buy the resolution, but very much appreciated the family aspect of the story. I have heard—and enjoyed—Ms. Lee’s narration of other books, but here, her attempts at American accents were, in a word, ridiculous. Has she ever been to California—or New York? Does she think everyone in America has a jerky, slightly southern way of speaking? Not sure I’ll continue with the series, but glad I gave it a try. Four stars.

Elliott has a very nice touch with this new series. Lots of details from those early war years in Britain. One caveat to this story: her portrayal of the main character’s response to a groping incident seemed too contrived for such a supposedly intelligent young woman. A later conversation with her cousin about a long list of unwanted attention from men - and her passive response - also seemed out of character. However, these books are well worth listening to and I’ll look forward to the next installment.

So, what would a contemporary writer do with the character of Lydia Bennet? She would write a story of redemption. This young women is, as it turns out, resourceful, clear-eyed, and hardworking. Evidently, she also has massive reserves of forgiveness. Although I’m not sure the rather severe portrayal of her family is warranted, there is reconciliation enough in the end. Lydia’s age at 15 in P & P was always a bit problematic for me and even in her late teens here she seems much more mature. However, the direct appeal for more kindness, more latitude for love and forgiveness, was refreshing. 5 stars.

Michael Gilbert! What a delight. I only recently heard of his work. Set in 1950s London, the reader gets an interesting education in British law and the mores of that time accompanied by a laugh-out-loud dry wit. I’ll listen to all of his books available on Audible, And David Thorpe is perfect. Hilarious, actually. Loved it.
