Historia
In an isolated village in the Icelandic Westfjords, three friends set to work renovating a rundown house. But soon, they realize they are not as alone as they thought. Something wants them to leave, and it's making its presence felt. Meanwhile, in a town across the fjord, a young doctor investigating the suicide of an elderly woman discovers that she was obsessed with his vanished son. When the two stories collide, the terrifying truth is uncovered.

Story had such a good tone...til the end
Revisado: 10-11-20
I think ending horror books is notoriously difficult...this book did a great job setting a spooky tone, but things began to get really heavy / repetitive at the midpoint. It’s so frustrating when a character is set as totally oblivious and the tension is based just on them ignoring the obvious....and on the other hand, it’s also frustrating when a solution is totally out of the blue...this story has both! But the first half or so is excellent and atmospheric.

Historia
In this first novel, we are introduced to suave, handsome Tom Ripley: a young striver, newly arrived in the heady world of Manhattan in the 1950s. A product of a broken home, branded a "sissy" by his dismissive Aunt Dottie, Ripley becomes enamored of the moneyed world of his new friend, Dickie Greenleaf. This fondness turns obsessive when Ripley is sent to Italy to bring back his libertine pal, but he grows enraged by Dickie's ambivalent feelings for Marge, a charming American dilettante.

The tension is almost unbearable!
Revisado: 10-25-19
Such a nerve-wracking but entertaining take of deceit set in a backdrop of American tourism in Europe. Creepy.

Historia
Welcome to Black Spring, the seemingly picturesque Hudson Valley town haunted by the Black Rock Witch, a seventeenth century woman whose eyes and mouth are sewn shut. Muzzled, she walks the streets and enters homes at will. She stands next to children's bed for nights on end. Everybody knows that her eyes may never be opened or the consequences will be too terrible to bear.

This narrator is distractingly terrible
Revisado: 06-05-19
I love this book, have read it and was so excited it has an audio version...but the narrator’s interpretation rendered it un-listenable. His female and child characters were offensively whiny, nasal, and like nails on a damn chalkboard. He made you hate actually neutral female characters by using this mocking whine voice—I shudder to think that this is how he hears the women and children in his life. It only got worse as the story progressed, I made it halfway through then had to quit because it was so grating. Too bad. Hope that narrator is ok.

Historia
The glorious Phryne Fisher returns to the spotlight in her seventh adventure. Fisher is an independent, unconventional PI with competence, unflappability and flamboyance in equal measures.
Running late to the Hinkler gala performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's Ruddigore, she meets some thugs in a dark alley and handles them convincingly before they can ruin her silver dress. Phryne then finds that she has rescued a gorgeous Chinese, Lin Chung, and his grandmother, and is briefly mistaken for a deity.

Too theatric
Revisado: 04-20-19
Not pleasant to listen to because of the overly theatric element—it’s like a radio play, not like someone narrating a book to be followed.

Revisado: 04-13-19
The voice acting was really high and low (volume wise) and lots of screechy, stagey accents. Made it hard to follow the story. Way too theatrical.

Phryne Fisher is doing one of her favorite things -dancing at the Green Mill (Melbourne's premier dance hall) to the music of Tintagel Stone's Jazzmakers, the band who taught St Vitus how to dance. And she's wearing a sparkling lobelia-coloured georgette dress. Nothing can flap the unflappable Phryne -especially on a dance floor with so many delectable partners. Nothing except death, that is.

Just a warning, a bunch of homophobia in this one
Revisado: 04-11-19
I love this series, but this one in particular is dated AF and didn’t age well due to the way it handles some themes of homosexuality.

A nice accompaniment
Revisado: 06-06-18
Nothing will ever be as good as the Golden Compass. This is good filler to the other books if you are interested in the lore of that world, but is not in itself a very compelling or complete story. It’s a nice accompaniment though!

Historia
An indispensable, richly informative, and always entertaining audio sourcebook on Provence, by the writer who has made the region his own. Though organized from A to Z, this is hardly a conventional work of reference. It is rather a selection of those aspects of Provence that Peter Mayle, in almost 20 years there, has found to be the most interesting, curious, delicious, or down-right fun.
