Takes me back in time to my days in Prescott, Arizona in the late 1940’s. Although not the true “Wild West” at that time, Prescott, Mayer, Flagstaff, Sedona, and the surrounding towns still had a flavor of the West that brought the cowboy way to the heart of a small boy. The character of U.S. Marshal, Will Tanner, is the epitome of the cowboy and his horse riding off into the sunset. Love it!

Simple story, fun, and enough twists and turns to keep me guessing - sometimes.
The narrator is one of the best I’ve ever listened to for any book.

This book is much different than the many I’ve read since I was twelve years old. (I’m 75, now) It was a lot of fun, and had just enough twists and turns to keep an old man’s interest. No “cussin”, sex, or killin’ off the heroes. The bad guys took a beatin’ and deserved every bullet - even the axe. I will continue listening to McCauley’s books as long as you never drastically change your style and KEEP YOUR READER.

I listened to the entire story and found it had no redeeming qualities whatsoever. It reminded me of “old people playing pool.” Very disappointing. There are many phrases I have to describe this book, but none of them are printable.

Although I didn’t want to have Jo eliminated from the lives of the O’Conner family - especially the horrific way she was wounded and died - I do feel it required the author to exhibit a great deal of courage. I admire that.

First. - Include Richard Ferrone as one of your characters. Perhaps a Street Fairy or a child molesting snitch. Then kill him off in the book’s first sentence. His narration makes all of your main characters sound like idiots, The voices he chooses for Lucas and his partners are so phony they’re laughable. As a former police officer, and Deputy Sheriff, I am insulted. Your stories are based in Minnesota, NOT the Bronx. Get rid of Ferrone!

I have been reading John Sanford for many years, and have attended many of his book signings. He was very friendly, accommodating, and time permitting, answered all our questions. Nice man.

Lucas Davenport has been one of my fictional heroes for many years. Lucas and Virgil Flowers make a very believable “cop” team. However, I miss Lucas on the trail of the bad guys as he kicks ass on the streets of Minneapolis and St. Paul. I like his snitches and the girls he flirts with. Dark of the Moon is a good writing, but the constant review of the many suspects and motives they might possess began getting boring and even irritating towards the end. Also, really no surprise who the killer was. The book was predictable and not much of a thriller. Sorry, Mr. Sanford, I was disappointed in this one.

After 27 years In law enforcement, I retired. Over the years, before and after retirement, I have read every one of John Sanford’s books. A couple of months ago I signed up for Audible so I could listen to his books while I pursue several of my hobbies. Big mistake! Reading his books over the past several years I have made friends with every one of Sanford’s repeated characters in all of his stories. I imagined what they looked like, the sound of their voices, how they told their stories - everything about them. I know cops. I know how they talk. I know their warped sense of humor. I know how they sometimes treat the bad guys a bit rougher than they should. I also know how vulnerable they are, how dangerous their job is, and how much they care about the victims of horrendous crimes. I know they are human and make mistakes. I know that a large part of our current society would turn their back on a cop in danger or one who needs help. I know cops I’m are unconditionally willing to risk their life for the public they work for. I also know they will do everything in their power to have the back of their brother officers. Law enforcement is an elite brotherhood. When I listen to the readers of Sanford’s books on Audible, I become furious with how the characters are depicted. The readers use voices for the characters that make them all sound like effeminate, whining, melodramatic misfits, and it is insulting to all police officers. We do not talk like that. Lucas Davenport does not sound like a whinny little sissy with a deviated septum. Virgil Flowers does not sound like Goofy or Mickey Mouse. Weather and Letty do not sound like ninety five year old spinsters. Help!! Find someone that KNOWS how cops talk. Please!!

I liked the story because it was written by John Sanford. However, after so many years and so many books, I have grown just a bit tired of the predictability of his stories. I still enjoy his work, but the stories in recent years are similar to watching a movie on the Hallmark Network - too predictable. I know who the bad guy is long before the last few chapters.
