Abrupt
Revisado: 10-20-19
The ending was way too abrupt. I was enjoying it and all of a sudden it ended. Not a way to end a book if you ask me.

One of the best books I’ve read in a long time. It held my attention from the very first chapter, and I lost a bunch of sleep listening to it long into the night. I don’t want to give anything away. Just read it.

Best book I’ve read in a long time. I did guess a major plot twist, but I’ve been reading a long time. I often guess right. Anyway this was a good one. Highly recommended.

I liked everything about this book but the ending. Did Jennifer Dornbush just get tired of writing??? That really sucked.

Historia
Hayat Shah was captivated by Mina long before he met her: his mother's beautiful, brilliant, and soulfully devout friend is a family legend. When he learns that Mina is leaving Pakistan to live with the Shahs in America, Hayat is thrilled. Hayat's father is less enthusiastic. He left the fundamentalist world behind with reason. What no one expects is that when Mina shows Hayat the beauty and power of the Quran, it will utterly transform the boy.

Really good
Revisado: 10-28-16
I loved this book from beginning to finish, and don't know why I waited so long to read it. It's a book about love and family, prejudice and acceptance, and saying goodbye. I admit it, I cried. Not all the way through, of course. There was plenty of happiness. One of the best things about American Dervish was the learning moments. I feel ever so much more enlightened having read it.

Historia
This transcendent story follows four college friends who move to New York City, buoyed by ambition: Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, an artist; Malcolm, an architect; and, at the center, Jude, a withdrawn, brilliant attorney haunted by an unspeakable past. Through decades of shared and separate lives, Jude’s suffering - and its impact on those who love him - raises questions about the limits of human endurance, the possibility for redemption, and the meaning of friendship.

Oh, my heart
Revisado: 09-17-16
This was a novel from the heart, from an author I'd never heard of. But even in its immensity, even while I cried buckets, I couldn't stop reading. From the very beginning and all the way through, while I was telling myself I couldn't recommend it to friends because it would break their hearts too, I knew because of the love between the characters that this was a book that needed to be read.
I only THOUGHT I loved John Irving. This reminds but surpasses.

Historia
When an intricate old map is found stuffed into the walls of the bistro in Three Pines, it at first seems no more than a curiosity. But the closer the villagers look, the stranger it becomes. Given to Armand Gamache as a gift the first day of his new job, the map eventually leads him to shattering secrets. To an old friend and older adversary. It leads the former Chief of Homicide for the Sûreté du Québec to places even he is afraid to go. But must. And there he finds four young cadets in the Sûreté academy, and a dead professor. And, with the body, a copy of the old, odd map.

Her best yet
Revisado: 09-03-16
I loved everything about Louise Penny's newest novel, including the narrator, who seemed to finally "be" Armand Gamache, which he wasn't in her previous book. We have our soft-spoken Gamache back, and no one can be more thrilled about that than I.
The book began with an old map that had been found behind the walls of the bistro. And we find that Armand has taken on the position of head of the Police Academy. We ultimately have several mysteries to figure out, in the very best Louise Penny lyrical style. There is nothing not to like and everything to love.

TBR: Everything this author has ever written
Revisado: 08-15-16
This is the best mystery/suspense/thriller I've read in a very long time. From the beginning, you begin to suspect that Anna is a tortured soul...and soon you find out it started in her early adolescence. Luckily she forms an alliance with her older cousin Jeannie. As long as she has Jeannie in her life, she can get through...whatever.
Anna marries Ronnie, a man with depression problems of his own. One day, on February 17, which turns out to be a date that has plagued with horrible occurrences, her husband commits suicide.
To escape it all, Anna moves far from home to a college in West Virginia, where she takes a job she enjoys with a supervisor she likes and who likes her back. Then comes that dreaded February day - and tragedy strikes again.
And it just keeps getting better and better....

Read this book! So powerful!
Revisado: 08-05-16
If you're interested in WWII and the Holocaust, this is the book for you. If you loved The Nightingale and Sarah's Key, you'll love and be moved by this book too. Based on a true story and real people, I know it will suck you in right away. One of the characters, Kasia, was delivering a packet for the underground in her hometown in Poland. That was the day she got caught by the Germans. Her mother, not a member of the underground, was only bringing Kasia a cheese sandwich, when she saw her two daughters being arrested - so she went with them. What happened at the Concentration Camp, Ravensbrück, was truly horrifying. This is a page turner. And a debut! I'm hoping for more books from this author!
