Historia
It’s 1997 at the dawn of the digital age in San Francisco. Ex-journalist and struggling alcoholic David “Itchy” Crane’s fledgling “information consultancy” business is getting slowly buried by bad luck, bad decisions, and the growing presence of the Internet. Before he can completely self-destruct, a private investigator offers him 50 grand to find a missing girl named Ashley. Crane takes the job because the money’s right and because the only clue to her disappearance is a dead-on oil portrait of Crane himself - painted by the mysterious missing girl he has never met.

Stupid 8th grade boy talk
Revisado: 05-27-24
See above. This might have been a decent mystery story in the hands of someone who can write without constantly dipping into gratuitous sexualization reminiscent of 60’s tv. I guess it’s pitched to really old dudes even older than me who don’t know better. Plus - who still uses the “C” word??? I can’t wait to have a little conversation with the person who said “read it! It’s great!” I think I’ve just been punked!!!

Historia
Fabienne is dead. Her childhood best friend, Agnès, receives the news in America, far from the French countryside where the two girls were raised—the place that Fabienne helped Agnès escape ten years ago. Now, Agnès is free to tell her story. As children in a war-ravaged, backwater town, they’d built a private world, invisible to everyone but themselves—until Fabienne hatched the plan that would change everything, launching Agnès on an epic trajectory through fame, fortune, and terrible loss.

How I kept waiting for the point of the book to become evident
Revisado: 02-01-24
A meandering and vague sort of story. I didn’t really get it. Although I did enjoy listening to the narrator and will look into other books she has worked on.

Historia
God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose unlikely prophet is 18-year-old Lauren Olamina. The young woman's diary entries tell the story of her life amid a violent 21st-century hell of walled neighborhoods and drug-crazed pyromaniacs - and reveal her evolving Earthseed philosophy. Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.

Unusual, provocative, utterly depressing.

Perhaps it’s just the sadness of the current times but although I loved Kindred, this book was hard to read emotionally.

Historia
On June 23, 1911, Fall River, Massachusetts, is reveling in its success. The Cotton Centennial is in full swing as Joseph Bartlett takes his place among the local elite in the parade grandstand. The meticulously planned carnival has brought the thriving textile town to an unprecedented halt; rich and poor alike crowd the streets, welcoming President Taft to America’s “Spindle City.” Yet as he perches in the grandstand, Joseph Bartlett straddles the divide between Yankee mill owners and the union bosses who fight them.

Read, don’t listen
Revisado: 09-22-21
I used a credit for this book because as a fiber artist I thought the history would be interesting. It’s not. Only read if you have nothing else cued up (😂, as if!!) The narration is the worst I’ve heard in years of my audible enrollment. Could not finish.
I wish I could get this credit back.

On their first night in Paris, the Gamaches gather as a family for a bistro dinner with Armand’s godfather, the billionaire Stephen Horowitz. But an attempt on the elderly man’s life sends Armand, his wife, Reine-Marie, and his former second-in-command at the Sûreté, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, from the top of the Tour d’Eiffel, to the bowels of the Paris Archives, from luxury hotels to odd, coded works of art. It sends them deep into the secrets Armand’s godfather has kept for decades.

This week I have listened to the audio of A Better Man, watched on Acorn A Still Life and just finished reading my hard copy of All the Devils. I believe I have just read the perfect mystery novel. Every element, clever perfection. I was a nervous wreck during most of it, it kept me awake. Dominated my thoughts. And the ending was icing on the “justice served”cake!

Abandoned by his father after his mother drowns in a frozen Minnesota lake, fifteen-year-old Wes Ballot is stranded with coldhearted grandparents and holed up in his mother’s old bedroom, surrounded by her remnants and memories. As the wait for his father stretches unforgivably into months, a local girl, whose own mother died a brutal death, captures his heart and imagination, giving Wes fresh air to breathe in the suffocating small town.

Revisado: 07-30-19
While well written in captivating prose this is a story the starts sad, moves on sadly, continues to be sad in the middle and ends with the, now expected, tinge of sadness on a bare uptick of hope. Be sure you’re in the mood for, well, sadness, when you pick up this book.

When Ruby Clare's father was alive, they toiled together happily on their dairy farm in Northern Ireland. Since his death Ruby - thirty-three, plump but comely - has been forced indoors and made a domestic drudge for Martha, her endlessly critical mother, and her prettier younger sisters, May and June.

Revisado: 07-18-19
“Life’s not always fair” our elders tell us when we grumble and whine. Sometimes, though, they truly aren’t as main character, Ruby discovers. But as this story unfolds, Karma intercedes in favor of our heroine. I have thoroughly enjoyed this trilogy, it’s unforgettable characters and a story line come full circle.

Historia
For Susan Green, messy emotions don’t fit into the equation of her perfectly ordered life. She has a flat that is ideal for one, a job that suits her passion for logic, and an “interpersonal arrangement” that provides cultural and other more intimate benefits. But suddenly confronted with the loss of her mother and the news that she is about to become a mother herself, Susan’s greatest fear is realized. She is losing control.

Unexpected insights and narrator who sounds just like you think the main character would! Loved that. Story leads you through liking, hating then understanding all the main characters. Loved that, too.

A done-to-death dystopian book that reads like a high schooler who’s watched lots of 007 movies wrote it. Couldn’t finish it, quit being curious about what “really” happened - couldn’t stand all the stupid boy jibber-jabber.
I love Nicola Barber but, sorry, Hon...this book is crap.

So glad I got this book on reward points because this narration is the worst I’ve experienced since signing up for audible!
I’ll check the book out from the library to follow the story line.
