Historia
By 1939, Anglo-American journalist John Russell has spent over a decade in Berlin, where his son lives with his mother. He writes human-interest pieces for British and American papers, avoiding the investigative journalism that could get him deported. But as World War II approaches, he faces having to leave his son as well as his girlfriend of several years, a beautiful German starlet. When an acquaintance from his old communist days approaches him to do some work for the Soviets, Russell is reluctant, but he is unable to resist the offer.

A Spy novel with literary thrust
Revisado: 10-15-24
This felt like Act I as I read it. Allowing it to hold that position in the series had me appreciating the way Downing handled the slow burn and intricate and nuanced humanity of espionage. I have high hopes for the rest of the series built upon a solid foundation. I like the characters, the precarious nature of Russell’s position, and his “everyman” approach to spy craft. Not to mention the supporting cast, world building, atmospheric tension, and a nice balance between interiority and plot.

Nope. Nope. Nope.

I really tried but could no longer continue. You can’t lean on a one-time witnesses who remembers a random train passenger from years earlier simply because it’s an easy plot catalyst to save your heroine.

Historia
Slough House is a dumping ground for British intelligence agents who've screwed up cases in any number of ways - by leaving a secret file on a train or blowing a surveillance. River Cartwright, one such "slow horse", is bitter about his failure and about his tedious assignment transcribing cell phone conversations. When a young man is abducted and his kidnappers threaten to broadcast his beheading live on the Internet, River sees an opportunity to redeem himself.

The Series is Better...GASP!
Revisado: 01-02-23
While it is almost lock-step the same as season 1 of the series (starring Gary Oldman), the differences were critical. This was fun but you stand to miss nothing by watching the series, instead if that's your question.

Chewy Spy Novel... blah
Revisado: 12-27-22
Espionage tales shouldn't be the soft, slightly under-baked cookie of the genre fiction world. This is the so-so B film you watch when you're sick and want nothing more than to survive until your next nap arrives.
I held out how until the end but was ultimately disappointed. At one point, I conjured up a few angles that would have satisfied me but none of them happened.

So glad I read this. Moving. Biting. Incredible.
Revisado: 10-05-22
I tried this book on a whim because it purported to be about a spy. And while I did not get the espionage I thought I would, I was not disappointed.
This book is about mankind, war, and the political struggles on the smallest scale all set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War.
The social commentary was poignant. The cultural commentary will annihilate American xenophobia. The deeply flawed inner dialogue was relatable. And the climax was perfectly tailored.
Every single word in this book was painstaking labored over. That effort, alone, the craftsmanship of the writing will be an intoxication to the reader.

Historia
This hilarious, heartfelt, and soaring adventure will delight fans of The Goonies and Indiana Jones. Performed as a 1930s radio drama, it’s bursting with humor for all ages, orchestral scoring, and some of the most talented voices on Broadway. When their ace pilot parents (and adorable puppy) mysteriously disappear over the Pacific, the Flamingo Sisters - Flo, Faye, and Franny - escape the clutches of their evil Uncle Freidrich (who believes girls should never pilot aeroplanes) and join a flying circus.

Adults beware but kids love it
Revisado: 07-16-22
My 5 year old enjoyed most of it. And I know it's not FOR me but I do have to listen to it, as well. Some parts were laugh-out-loud funny but most of it made me feel like the creators didn't value their audience's intelligence too highly. I don't love that for my kid. Just my opinion.

When Sports Illustrated was launched in 1954, baseball was, indisputable, the national pastime, its stars America's epic heroes, its rivalries the era's mythology. As baseballs fortunes rose and fell over the next 50 years - and then rose again to new heights, drawing more than 65 million fans to ballparks in 2004 - the game never failed to produce great drama and inspired storytelling.

Presumptuous Christianity cloaked in medicine
Revisado: 04-26-22
This was not for me. A certain demographic will eat this up and it's not without certain nuggets of truth but you can get those elsewhere without the overwhelming smugness of ardent Christianity. If you want fsith-based confirmation bias, with a smattering of ideas you probably already know, this is for you.
