Historia
Artificial intelligence does the seemingly impossible - driving cars, trading stocks, and teaching children. But facing the sea change that AI will bring can be paralyzing. How should companies set strategies, governments design policies, and people plan their lives for a world so different from what we know? In Prediction Machines, three eminent economists recast the rise of AI as a drop in the cost of prediction. With this single, masterful stroke, they lift the curtain on the AI-is-magic hype and show how basic tools from economics provide clarity about the AI revolution and a basis for action by CEOs, managers, policy makers, investors, and entrepreneurs.

Good general intro to AI
Revisado: 02-20-24
I recommend this audiobook as a good introduction to AI. But, it’s starting to show its age. Very good & realistic vision of what is possible & what was currently happening then. I gave this a middle rating for performance because the material required no real stretch of the narrator’s abilities. Nonetheless, good starting point to jump into either the technical or strategic side of this fast developing field. I recommend this audiobook.

In Artificial Intelligence, Mitchell turns to the most urgent questions concerning AI today: How intelligent - really - are the best AI programs? How do they work? What can they actually do, and when do they fail? How humanlike do we expect them to become, and how soon do we need to worry about them surpassing us? Along the way, she introduces the dominant methods of modern AI and machine learning, describing cutting-edge AI programs, their human inventors, and the historical lines of thought that led to recent achievements.

Great primer on AI
Revisado: 07-08-23
I recommend this audiobook as a very good primer on AI. It lays great groundwork & initial research to better understand AI, it’s origins, the community of researchers & developers, it’s current states & future potential. I write this in 2023, while this book was published in 2019. Already, many of the predictions made in this book are interesting (now) myopic & smile inducing. I only give this four stars overall b/c I am not in love with this book as I am with my truly loved favorites.

Excellent! Dense with insights & analysis
Revisado: 07-12-22
This is a superb book dense with insights, history & analysis. There are so many great passages & lines that I stopped bookmarking them. I’m simply going to re-listen to this book to absorb it more. I gave only 3 stars for the narration not because it is bad in any way, but because the material didn’t require any stretch or variety. There is so much that I found interesting & insightful, but I found myself critical & disagreeing with some of this book. At the end, I felt he was trying to wrap it up, but fell short. The history & analysis of humanism & animism is great, but the idea of the move towards digitalism is flawed & not as engaging as the others. I, like millions of others, am not all about creating content & information then needing to post it to feel connected or validated. Nonetheless, I highly recommend this book.

At once elegant and riveting, Sync tells the story of the dawn of a new science. Steven Strogatz, a leading mathematician in the fields of chaos and complexity theory, explains how enormous systems can synchronize themselves, from the electrons in a superconductor to the pacemaker cells in our hearts. He shows that although these phenomena might seem unrelated on the surface, at a deeper level there is a connection, forged by the unifying power of mathematics.

Good listen providing good history on these ideas.
Revisado: 05-25-20
This is a good listen overall. The narration required no real stretch of ability; though there was one short part where the narrator changed slightly to accentuate the passage as an article excerpt. Very good work there, seriously.
I’m still very much a huge fan of “Understanding Complexity” by Page. That listen covered everything in this one with more clarity & applicable examples. “Sync” provides more history & depth of some characters in this realm, but I still prefer Page’s book. Keep in mind that “Understanding Complexity” is a set of lectures, so may come off as more dry than “Sync”.
Nonetheless, this is a good listen. I recommend this book if you are interested in chaos, complexity, Lorenze, Mandelbrot, small worlds & synchronicity.

Decent primer & history on chaos.
Revisado: 12-04-19
Overall a decent primer & intro to the history of chaos theory. I’m glad I listened to this for the background & personalities of this field, but I’m in search of applications to real world situations. The material called for no stretch of narrative ability, so I rated it mid-level. I preferred “Understanding Complexity” to this book. I moderately recommend this book for the reasons above.

Historia
Recent years have seen the introduction of concepts from the new and exciting field of complexity science that have captivated the attention of economists, sociologists, engineers, businesspeople, and many others. These include tipping points, the wisdom of crowds, six degrees of separation (or Kevin Bacon), and emergence. Complexity science can shed light on why businesses or economies succeed and fail, how epidemics spread and can be stopped, and what causes ecological systems to rebalance themselves after a disaster.

I am just finishing my first listen of this book, and I am going to restart it immediately. There is SO much to absorb, and it is all so engrossing! I re-listened to chapters repeatedly, but I look forward to listening to the whole book again.
The material didn’t call for any stretch of performance, but he was nonetheless more than adequate.
I highly recommend this book!

I keep dining myself wanting to restart this whole series from the beginning because it is SO well written & narrated. This will certainly be picked up in the future by Netflix or some movie producers. My hope his that they devote at least a whole movie or season to each of the semesters, to truly do this story justice. I’m starting the next book immediately. And, once again , I highly recommend this listen!

Now finally sophomores, their curriculum expands, allowing them to train in the majors that Heroes specialize in. The new classes will test their minds, bodies, and determination in ways never anticipated.

I cannot speak highly enough of this book & series so far. Superb, fully fleshed out characters. Nuanced & expert narration. Surprising & enthralling story. This book is double the length of my normal listens, but it passed too quickly. I already purchased the next book, but I’m so into this story & characters that I’m considering re-listening to this from the start of the first book!
I highly recommend this book!

Knowledge is power. That would be the motto of Lander University, had it not been snatched up and used to death by others long before the school was founded. For while Lander offers a full range of courses to nearly all students, it also offers a small number of specialty classes to a very select few. Lander is home to the Hero Certification Program, a curriculum designed to develop students with superhuman capabilities, commonly known as Supers, into official Heroes.

Excellent book! I highly recommend this listen!
Revisado: 04-15-19
This listen made me laugh & care & think.
The narrator is at the very top of the best.
The story is comprehensive with no slow spots or missteps. I barely registered that is book is longer than my normal listens because it passed so smoothly & way too quickly. I kept rewinding so as to absorb passages again & to laugh again. Though dealing with young adults, I did not feel the writing or story was juvenile.
The characters was all fully fleshed out; this must have taken the author ages to grow each character so as to know perfectly what each would say & do. And, each character (and this world the author created) are so ripe with potential.
This is one of those listens that I didn’t want to end. I’m so glad that there are volumes, chapters & hours more.
I most highly recommend this book.

Decent listen with known devices & tactics
Revisado: 03-18-19
This is a good book about learning, not necessarily about learning just math. The narration is good, but no stretch of ability was needed.
The ideas of this book are reiterated in other works. I feel that “Make It Stick” was a better version & imparting of these same ideas.
Nonetheless, this is a decent listen. But, if I were to suggest a book on this subject, I recommend “Make It Stick”.
