Historia
In 1967, 12 young men attempted to climb Alaska's Mount McKinley—known to the locals as Denali—one of the most popular and deadly mountaineering destinations in the world. Only five survived. Journalist Andy Hall, son of the park superintendent at the time, investigates the tragedy. He spent years tracking down survivors, lost documents, and recordings of radio communications. In Denali's Howl, Hall reveals the full story.

Really bad narration.
Revisado: 03-27-19
I don't expect to get angry over a book, unless the subject matter is meant to get me there. However, when the subject is climbing and the narrator is so damn bad that I have to think about the meaning of each sentence he (Jim Manchester) reads...then I get angry. I'd like to read or listen to this book. I wonder if the narrator has any idea of what he read. I could do better...and i'm an old man.

Historia
When Wynn and Jack decide to canoe the Maskwa River in Northern Canada, they anticipate long days of leisurely paddling and picking blueberries and nights of stargazing and reading paperback Westerns. But a wildfire making its way across the forest adds unexpected urgency to the journey. When they hear a man and woman arguing on the fog-shrouded riverbank and decide to warn them about the fire, their search for the pair turns up nothing and no one. But: The next day, a man appears on the river, paddling alone. Is this the man they heard? And, if he is, where is the woman?

I would have enjoyed this book...
Revisado: 03-21-19
when I was a teenager. I'm sure I would have enjoyed it later, too, when I was raising my young son. But here I am, now an old man...and I can't imagine enjoying this story any more than I did today. I couldn't put down. Actually, I mean I couldn't stop listening to it. Beautifully written and beautifully narrated. I was in the canoe with them. I smelled the smoke. I felt rampage of the rapids. Most of all I felt like part of that thing called "best friendship". Thank you, Peter, for another wonderful story.

Not the best of Grey Man...
Revisado: 03-13-19
In fact, it may be the worst of the Grey Man series. The plot was convoluted and the characters were clichés. I tried to like the story, but had to give up.

Historia

Lucas Davenport knows exactly how long.In 1985, Davenport was a young cop with a reputation for recklessness, and the girls' disappearance was a big deal. His bosses ultimately declared the case closed, but he never agreed with that. Now that he has a chance to investigate it all over again, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: It wasn't just the bodies that were buried. It was the truth.

Historia
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

Historia
How do we fulfill our conflicting duties as father, husband, and son; wife and mother; child and adult? Jew and American? How can we claim our own identities when our lives are linked so closely to others’? These are the questions at the heart of Jonathan Safran Foer’s first novel in eleven years—a work of extraordinary scope and heartbreaking intimacy. Unfolding over four tumultuous weeks in present-day Washington, D.C., Here I Am is the story of a fracturing family in a moment of crisis.

I think this is one great book
Revisado: 03-06-19
BUT don't try to do anything (like driving) while your listening to it. If you've read any of Foer's work, you know that the dialogue is super-sonic fast and you can miss an entire conversation if your focus slips for a moment. I loved the family...all 3 generations that live in this story. And while I don't know for sure, it seems more than a little biographical. Having read all 16 hours of "Here I Am" I feel like part of their family. I know I ate with them, because I could smell the pickles. Give yourself a treat and read this book. It's the best of Foer.

It was the last-chance moment of the war. In January 2007, President George W. Bush announced a new strategy for Iraq. He called it "the surge". "Many listening tonight will ask why this effort will succeed when previous operations to secure Baghdad did not. Well, here are the differences," he told a skeptical nation. Among those listening were the young, optimistic Army infantry soldiers of the 2-16, the battalion nicknamed the Rangers.

If I were sitting with the auther, David Finkel, I'd thank him, deeply grateful for the gift of this story. I believe i've spent the last 11 hours with the 216th Battilion, the "Rangers"... But really, it wasn't 11 hours, it was 15 months of active duty...or the 24 months this story encompases. Had I not read David's book, I'd be empty of an important part of so many "Good Soldiers". Again, thank you, David Finkel, for this gift.

Historia
Buzz Bissinger’s twins were born three minutes—and a world—apart. Gerry, the older one, is a graduate student at Penn, preparing to become a teacher. His brother Zach has spent his life attending special schools. He’ll never drive a car, or kiss a girl, or live by himself. He is a savant, challenged by serious intellectual deficits but also blessed with rare talents: an astonishing memory, a dazzling knack for navigation, and a reflexive honesty that can make him both socially awkward and surprisingly wise.

This is the truest tale i have ever read.
Revisado: 08-08-15
Would you consider the audio edition of Father's Day to be better than the print version?
I didn't read the print version, but it couldn't be any better. These people, Buzz and Zack, lived in the telling of their story. And I was right there with them. Buzz is not the most likable guy in the world, nor the best father. I know this because he told us the true story. I read this book after hearing a PBS interview of Buzz, in which he mentioned that he was disappointed that "Father's Day" had bombed. He was wrong. This is a beautiful, tough, true story of a father and son....bumps and all.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Father's Day?
Listening to the many, humiliating episodes of Buzz falling apart and blowing up...blaming Zack for all that was wrong. I wanted to slap him back to sense...and i wanted to cry for them both.
Which character – as performed by Buzz Bissinger – was your favorite?
I don't see how any father could help but love Zack. Maybe I'm wrong about my limitation to fathers, but that's all I can speak to.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No...I had to stop for hours to think about what i was reading; about what was really happening.. Therefor the book took me two days.
Any additional comments?
I read "Friday Night Lights" decades ago. I think it was a wonderful, epic, true story. I want more of Bissinger. I'm selfish that way. I'd like to read more about his life...leather and all.
