*That's* how you do satire!
Revisado: 05-07-23
I loved it! it's everything satire should be - sharp, clever, a little funny but the kind of humor that makes you laugh so you don't cry or scream.
I loved the sci-fi structure for the story. Max Barry always delivers something special that makes you think.

This Audible Exclusive performance features a unique introduction written and narrated by Miriam Margolyes. Recognised as one of Dickens' most accomplished titles, Bleak House has impressed critics and audiences alike since it was first published in 1852. The novel boasts one of the most intelligent and engaging plots in all of English literature and is sure to engage the listener's imagination as it transports us back in time to the seedy, grimy and hazardous streets of Victorian London.

great human interest narrative
Revisado: 05-04-23
I'm reading all of Dickens this year and this is my third, longest (40 hours) and favorite so far. I highly recommend having SparkNotes, Litcharts or just Wikipedia with separate chapter summaries and a good character list (because there are billions of characters 😜) or the like handy. Without a good working knowledge of the history of the time, stratification of society, legalities, values, family structure, you can't enjoy and understand some important plot points. I mainly read the chapter summaries after chapters I feel I didn't "get," but sometimes before if I am having trouble catching his drift. Don't even worry about spoilers because they aren't spoilers if you can't follow the multiple entwined storylines in the first place. besides, IMHO, the joy of Dickens is in his understanding of humanity, inhumanity and human behavior.

Historia
'Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts. Facts alone are wanted in life.' So says Thomas Gradgrind, a wealthy, utilitarian school board superintendent. Father to Tom and Louisa, he shapes the minds of all the young children, including his own, with the exception of only one: the circus-born Sissy Jupe.

An important book about seismic social upheaval
Revisado: 04-15-23
I'm working my way through all of Dickens. I think it's a shame US high schools try teaching Dickens. I'm reading things that I, a book fiend, barely finished, didn't learn anything from, didn't enjoy, and/or don't remember anything about. Dickens' time is just far enough removed from ours that social norms, education, jobs, family expectations and the like are faintly recognizable, if at all, without life experience and a decent grasp on the history and geography of the era
Hard Times never would have been relatable to me as a 16-year-old girl - it took concentration and repeating passages and even whole chapters to "get it" as a 53-year-old woman.
That said, it was well worth the effort, as it captured an important transitional period that is still affecting our day-to-day life.

A masterpiece of feminism & social commentary
Revisado: 09-10-22
Grady Hendrix is brilliant. When it comes to non-mainstream fiction, horror, sci-fi & absurdist fiction, Grady Hendrix stands alone in his ability to make a story with a moral & not beat you over the head with it. Every story of his highlights the challenges & horrors of being a woman in a patriarchy. "We Sold Our Souls" is an exceptional story rooted in those feelings music expresses for us, the ones we can't put words to & the music that pushes us through when we don't think we can live another day "under the wheel."
