Jackson Lamb, Roddy Ho, and the others, all in character and read so well it couldn’t be done better and, as always, full of twists and turns right up to the very last lines.

I wish it was even longer.
Revisado: 11-05-23
Her best to date. So many twists and turns and though several were completely unexpected, looking back one could see how well they’d been prepared for. The novel reenforced yet again for me the consequences of strong yet demagogic rhetoric and the power of fraud and how hard these are to expose and the exposers be believed.

In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

Could any book be better these days?
Revisado: 10-08-23
I cannot do Justice to Patchett’s Tom Lake. It is a jewel that gives me hope and optimism for family and love and just plain decency for the future. The cherry orchard with its lake and cemetery juxtaposed to the summer stock theatre with its lake and the cemetery in Our Town brings the contrast and the connection. Meryl Streep has the perfect voice to do Justice to this wonderful book. I just wish I hadn’t read it so that I could begin anew.

I didn’t know there could be a better Louise Penny but A World of Curiodities is exactly that.
Revisado: 09-13-23
Penny creates wonderful characters as always but her plotting is stunning. The book twists and turns and gets so exciting—and scary—that you know you must be reading the last in the series. It’s only fault is the necessary but slow opening chapters. But remember them snd read on!

Historia
Bernard Cornwell, the perennial New York Times bestselling author of the Richard Sharpe series and “perhaps the greatest writer of historical adventure novels today” (Washington Post) joins co-author Susannah Kells for A Crowning Mercy—a breathtaking romantic adventure set against the dramatic backdrop of the English Civil War. The exciting story of a rebellious Puritan woman on a perilous quest for love and fortune, A Crowning Mercy is a must for Cornwell fans as well as for devoted readers/listeners of Sharon Kay Penman and Diana Gabaldon.

Gripping historical novel
Revisado: 09-02-23
Although I had foreseen the ending quite early on, it did not detract from my pleasure in the plotting and the truly wonderfully wrought despicable characters. It’s a good summer read—I listened every day as I would take long hikes with my dog. The voices were beautifully done.

Historia
Catherine Morland reads tales of Gothic romance, yet leads a country life in Wiltshire. When she travels to Bath, she meets and falls in love with Henry Tilney. She is invited by his sister and father to stay at Northanger Abbey, where she meets all the trappings of Gothic horror that she has read about. Fortunately, she has her own good sense and irresistible but unsentimental hero, Henry Tilney.

Revisado: 07-25-23
The lovely light satiric voice is beautifully done though Catherine’s gothic fantasies are way over the top. The reader caught the tone of it all.

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

I simply adored every minute of this novel
Revisado: 08-28-20
The characters are wonderful. The plot delightful even though one knows half way through how the “mystery” will be revealed. The humor keeps breaking through so I was snorting with laughter. I wish I’d never read it so that I could do it all over again. During this period of political and public health anxiety , it was the only thing I looked forward to every day. Thank you, James McBride and the superb narrator.

White Privilege, white Nationalism, Being African American
Revisado: 10-17-19
Although the story seemed predictable in its outcome and teaching lessons, it is nonetheless one we need to hear. As a white listener who has,as a teacher, done much training , I found most interesting the final speech to a jury from the defense attorney who thought she understood race (and for most WHite liberal ears, she did— but she really didn’t—until now.

Revisado: 06-19-18
Great, crazy, melodramatic plot, beautifully read, it makes one giggle then shout with laughter at its absurdity. What a terrific break from the grim news of the day! I thoroughly recommend this short novel-thriller-mystery- love story. (Last category is slim pickings).

Historia
Marion Sharpe and her mother seem an unlikely duo to be found on the wrong side of the law. Quiet and ordinary, they have led a peaceful and unremarkable life at their country home, The Franchise. Unremarkable that is, until the police turn up with a demure young woman on their doorstep. Not only does Betty Kane accuse them of kidnap and abuse, she can back up her claim with a detailed description of the attic room in which she was kept, right down to the crack in its round window.

What a pleasure, Carole Boyd and Josephine Tey
Revisado: 02-10-18
I read an audible review recently from someone who had listened to Tey’s Brat Farrar, a book I’d read years ago and forgotten. So I listened to Carole Boyd narrate Brat Farrrar and was entranced. I looked for more Carole Boyd’s narrations and saw another Tey that I didn’t know. Although I probably liked the novel Brat Farrar a bit more, both works made me wonder how what was obviously a crime could be proved so. The Franchise Affair relies more on coincidence than Brat Farrar, a reason for the latter’s superiority. But what was excellent in both was Boyd’s narration as she seems to be able to enter into the voice and nuances of all characters.
