I have no true complaints about this book or this series, but if I had to find something to complain about it would the big time skips between books. I kind of feel like I missed out on a lot of stuff but at the same time I don’t think that they detracted from the overall enjoyment of the story.
The other thing that I noticed is that the system mechanics also kind of dropped off by the end of things and started heavily favoring plot progression. I don’t think this was a bad thing but I also enjoy the numbers and measured progression. I know some people don’t like the constant stat updates and skill progressions, but I enjoy them.
Regardless, the books did a great job of telling a fun, fantastical, and epic story of dragons, battle, and family.
The ending itself (no spoilers) was not what I would call heart pounding and fist clinchingly amazing, but it was still a very good ending that didn’t leave a sour taste in my mouth. Frankly, any series that doesn’t have a crappy depressing and or bittersweet ending instantly becomes a good if not great book series for me.
Overall, this has been a fun and enjoyable book series and I will try to keep an eye out for other books by this author.

My review is only about the things I didn’t like about the book so read at your own risk. The first three strikes are a matter of taste but the fourth hits a little on personal beliefs. You can blame the author for involving Christianity in a polytheistic book. Nonetheless, I tried to make it as objective as possible. But, I digress.

Strike one for me was jumping from character to character’s perspective. I prefer books that tell a story from a single character’s view. I don’t mind books that jump to another character briefly to add flavor or intrigue to the story, but dedicating large portions of multiple chapters to someone other than the defined main character annoys me.

Strike two was the lack of defined and explained growth in abilities. Almost every gain in abilities and growth was explained more as “after the fact” rather than a focus of the book. On top of that, I am beginning to loath the trope of the MC having a pitiful mana or magic or whatever reserve. All it does from a story perspective is it forces the character to travel down a very unconventional path to achieve power. Some books do it well, but others like this one feels like someone using a Rube Goldberg machine to drive in a nail where a hammer would do just fine. This isn’t helped by the book seeming to be quite magic focused, but then, the MC is made into more of an artificially created anti mage. It just didn’t match with what I thought the book’s description portrayed.

Strike three was the MC’s time being cut short from the educational system. This is kind of a newly acquired annoyance of mine, but I have read enough fantasy books to fill a shelf where the the MC goes to an academy where they are taught how to use their magical or supernatural abilities, only to be forced to leave the facility before graduating. Either because of unforeseen events or because some “richymcNoble” finds a way to force them to leave, as it was the case with this book.

Strike four (and an unexpected one at that) was involving Christianity into a book about norse mythology; literally in the epilogue. Regardless of your theological beliefs, the existence of multiple gods and goddess’s as being undeniably real in the book, straight up invalidates Christianity. To put it in a way that non Christians can understand, should the Biblical understanding of God (ALL Knowing, ALL Seeing, and ALL Powerful) be brought into a book with undeniably existing gods and goddess’s, one of two things would happen: Christianity would immediately fall apart as Christians would recognize they are being deceived about the nature of God amongst the book’s pantheon, OR the pantheon of god’s and goddess’s would be entirely wiped out for blasphemy.

To put it simply Christianity is either true or it’s not. There is no middle ground.

With four strikes this will be my first book out of the hundreds of books I’ve read, to receive a one star rating.

Congratulations

My one gripe, is that I didn’t like how the book ended. Ending a book on a low note often sullies the book for me.

I’ll look forward to the next book, but this book gets a minus one star from me.

My only complaint is that I don’t really like it when in fantasy stories, gods and goddesses get directly involved. It punches too close to home for me. Especially when (in this case) the MC makes a deal with and pledges loyalty to them in a sort of transaction.

Otherwise, it’s a solid book. I like the magic and abilities. Combat is fluid and makes sense. World building is great, and the progression is paced well.

I had a hard time getting into the story. This could be mostly due to personal tastes when it comes to RPG elements. But I will say that it was really hard to see the MC as a 25 year old. The narrator down-pitched his voice enough times that he sounded more like a retired 40-50 year old man.

I can’t say I was a huge fan of the “eat magical items or you die” thing. I personally don’t enjoy abilities or powers that have huge potential benefits but have debilitating side effects. Gaining power has its own side effects; there’s no need to add more on top of it.

I also felt that the book ended in a weird spot. It kind of ended mid arc.

I don’t know if I’ll be motivated enough to read the next book, but regardless, it definitely was not a bad book.

I genuinely don’t like complaining about things, but when I listen to a story and the bad outweighs the good; the good no longer feels relevant to talk about.

The best way I can describe this book in an analogy is that it’s like a child’s drawing who clearly has a talent for drawing but they still have serious quality issues.

As for the book itself; the creativity, premise, and vocabulary are pretty good, but the interpersonal interactions, plot, and consistency are quite lacking.

For example:

Towards the beginning of the book, the MC is introduced to an attractive like aged girl, and with little to no quality interaction with each other, he’s already calling her his girlfriend. It gets worse, though. When the MC leaves on a mission of some kind, he’s introduced to an even more attractive like aged girl. Without any discourse, explanation, or conversation; the first girl is somehow relegated to “a girl I found interesting, and nothing more.” Keep in mind, the last interaction with the previous girl was nothing short of affectionate and still under the pretense of “girlfriend.”

This was probably the most annoying of the faults I found with the book, but some more include that the MC somehow, because of “super advanced technology”, is super smart, has a blade that can cut through anything, and has knowledge and know-how to fight, strategize mass combat, and can effortlessly implement his knowledge into his newfound magic to literally vaporize his enemies.

In full transparency, I only read about half the book. With what I’ve stated already, however, it was enough for me to know I wasn’t going to enjoy the rest of it.

A few more gripes because I feel like mentioning them, were:

Sidelining the AI companion to a literal background character; the plot being held together by the MC’s motivation of “I was bored”; and a poorly blended mix of sci-fi and fantasy magic.

So, if it wasn’t obvious at this point, I don’t recommend this book.

As of writing this review this book is five years old and there is no second book.

If this book ever gets a second book, then this book has my full support. The book feigns on the side of dark but, the plot definitely leaves room for an awesome climb from the dredges of corruption. The ending of this book definitely left much to be desired. So, as I said, unless you see a book 2 for this series; I recommend moving on to something else.

I have to say no

I’m pretty sure all of my complaints come down to my personal tastes in literature, so I’d say odds are, you’ll enjoy this book. This review is for those who might share in some of my tastes and hope to save them from some frustrations and move on to a different book.

I will say the book was pretty good. Nice skill gains, enjoyable character growth, and high quality writing. Unfortunately, though, there were too many story elements that I disliked.

It was made clear to me towards the beginning of the book that I don’t share the same moral viewpoint as the author but, it wasn’t something that affected the overall telling of the story. For those that care, it had to do with the acceptance and inclusion of a certain character’s unconventional relationship choice into the book. It happens enough times in stories and also, I know there isn’t anything I can do about it. So, it is what it is. Regardless, this was still strike one for me.

Second, I have little to no tolerance for any form of (morally) dark magic, such as necromancy, death, and eldritch like skills abilities and or spells. Even (in this case) when a certain skill was forced onto the MC. The fact that the MC didn’t get the choice to refuse the skill gain irritates me in and of itself. Strike two.

Thirdly, I really hate it when books give characters skills that mess with their free will; having to constantly stay in control or be “consumed” by it (pun intended). This alone is strike three but to make things worse, the skill itself has some level of sapience to it.

Please, authors. For all that is good and fantastical, one sapient being per body. PLEASE! Bonus strike four.

All in all, I reluctantly will not be continuing with this series. There were too many red flags waving in my face to be able to see a good story through them.

It kind of reminds me a little bit of Iron Man but, more magically inclined rather than purely tech.

I have one gripe about the book hence the minus one star. This is a personal gripe in terms of my tastes in fantasy preferences and is not about being poorly written or something being stupid. That being said; I genuinely don’t like component based magic. I.e dried animal feces mixed with the hair of a mythical haired pigeon and blessed tears of a demon; made into a paste and applied to the forehead to cast (insert spell here). I made this up, but I’m not particularly exaggerating. To me, this is alchemy, not magic.

If it weren’t for this book being really good, I would have moved on from this title. However, I thoroughly enjoyed it and intend to read the next book.

Another solid book to the series. Cool new cards, lots of world building, and a decent amount of character growth. I was hoping to see a little more growth in the relationships department but, considering the general urgency this book’s plot had; I don’t think interpersonal interactions would have fit very well in this book.

Regardless, solid book. Looking forward to the next. :)
