Stretches believability
Revisado: 10-04-24
It's a decent story, and the plot while as elastic as a box of rubber bands, mostly holds together. The protagonist is likeable but incredibly naive. The supporting characters are with rare exception, uniformly stupid, incompetent and frequently corrupt. How a doctor can regularly outfox and beat law enforcement professionals, international spies and trained assassins, pulls that elastic aggressively. It's still a good listen, because the reader is excellent. Don't bother with the second book, it is utterly unbelievable and takes itself way too seriously.

Excellent reader, weak story
Revisado: 10-04-24
This is the second book featuring the protagonist Jonathan Ransom. Adventure writers take one of two approaches when their narrative crosses the line into unbelievability. The better ones will subtly break the fourth wall and wink at the reader indicating that they know that the reader knows the story cannot be rational, and the poorer ones plod on with all seriousness. This book is the latter. While Ransom is a meatball surgeon, whose expertise for decades as been in working people in terrible circumstances, magically displays mental acuity greater than that of intelligence and police professionals, international spies and the physical ability to regularly trounce professional killers. When pursued by law enforcement he only encounters the most incompetent ones imaginable and even the passing intelligent drop the ball every time. When others are blown up, he gets a scratch. When he jumps from a car going at 100 km/h he dislocates a shoulder and bruises some ribs. One does not need a medical background to know that this is complete nonsense. This book feels, smells and ends up like a poor afterthought to a more successful first book with the character. Too bad, because this writer can and has done much better. Excellent reader though.

An interesting story with excellent characters that maintains a brisk pace and never wallows in emotional muck, deep feelings, excessive self analysis or political correctness

If this is a Will Trent story, I never found it
Revisado: 09-10-24
I became a fan of the Will Trent character based on the television show. 3 hours in, and there has been a high speed Trent drive by and the rest is a long winded and exhausting output of emotion and feelings dreck, No likeable characters, a tedious reader and if there was a plot going somewhere after 25% complete, it still had not showed up. I prefer a story that moves, not oozes. So I learned my lesson and will enjoy Trent as a TV show but won't waste my time on these books. Others clearly love the book, but while I last listened a day ago, I cannot even remember the names of the characters, it bored me to tears. Thankfully Audible has an excellent return program when I do not gel with a book.

Best of the series
Revisado: 07-06-24
The toughest and most brutal of the series at times sickening. Also the most thoughtful and mature. Ray Porter is my favourite reader and does a tremendous job. Carr goes wider and deeper in his work with Reese. There’s plenty of action, but there’s also fear, courage and the will to achieve the goal. Brilliant

Historia
When Brian Holloway (Jack Quaid, The Boys) was hired by famous horror author Paul Robinette (Titus Welliver, Bosch) to crack an antique safe in his home, he had no idea what he was about to encounter. Opening that safe door unleashed something sinister — something that continues to haunt him. But what exactly? And can whatever slipped through that threshold be stopped?

More Enquirer than anything else
Revisado: 06-23-24
Bought it hoping for insight but it’s just a series of recorded interviews espousing personal opinions and exposing just how simple minded some of those in and around the Beatles were.

When a rogue military faction in China kidnaps a CIA case officer, global tensions ignite. Desperate to forestall the looming firestorm, the United States deploys an elite team of Navy SEALs to rescue the agent, protected by nothing but their training and a single pilot providing air cover from his FA-18E Super Hornet—normally, it wouldn’t be enough. Liked the concept involved
Revisado: 05-24-24
I like the authors and found the idea interesting. I found that the genius characters to be remarkably slow on the uptake and the book moves really slowly until it leaps ahead. The long term plot is still not clear and I found myself stopping listening just to get a break. Ray Porter is a great reader. With a lesser reader I may have given up
