For somebody who is interested in but totally unfamiliar with Byzantine history, The World of Byzantium lecture series is as great a starting point as I have come across. It is not the most thorough or detailed look at Byzantium, but it does give an excellent overview of the transformation (for lack of a better term) of the Eastern Roman empire into what historians refer to as the Byzantine Empire.

My one gripe is about the professor's pronunciation of the word Mediterranean, which really bugged me for some reason. He's a great lecturer, but pronunciation needs work on more than a few words. It didn't take away from my enjoyment overly.

A great book delivered expertly by the narrator, this book was absolutely riveting. I would absolutely recommend this book to anybody with an interest in the life of Caesar or of the end of the Roman Republic. I look forward to listening to the rest of Goldsworthy's work.

Robert Garland does an incredible job of bringing the past to life for his listeners in The Other Side of History. Whereas a lot of readily available histories tend to focus on the "Great Men" of history, this lecture series breathes life into the forgotten corners of our past. The people who are the focus of these lectures are the people who are usually in the margins of history: The poor, children, women, working-class people, etc. Listening to these lectures is like touring a foreign country and being immersed in the culture there, and I recommend this to anybody which a love of history.

The author of SPQR does a good job at presenting the first millenium of the Roman civilization in an in-depth but understandable way, and balances a healthy skepticism of the traditional narrative of Rome with a very clear passion for the material. It is a book that is approachable for someone with only a passing knowledge of Rome, and the narrator's clarity makes it even more so.
