Historia
One of America’s most celebrated novelists, Cormac McCarthy announced his towering presence on the literary stage with his first novel, The Orchard Keeper. Within the pages of this classic work, John Wesley Rattner, his uncle Ather, and bootlegger Marion Sylder find their lives dangerously entwined in pre-World War II Tennessee. There, the men’s tragedies and struggles are mirrored by the looming specter of industrialization.

First time reading the story
Revisado: 03-14-24
Evidence of future brilliance but it’s prose is a stumbling block in most instances. The religious imagery is a beautifully crafted and his characters have potential but the motivations are not flushed out with the clarity of later novels

Historia
In this taut, chilling audiobook, Lester Ballard - a violent, dispossessed man falsely accused of rape - haunts the hill country of East Tennessee when he is released from jail. While telling his story, Cormac McCarthy depicts the most sordid aspects of life with dignity, humor, and characteristic lyrical brilliance.

A glimpse into future McCarthy
Revisado: 03-06-24
Evil incarnate. People underground. The river. Sexual perversion. Faulkner, Jung, Doestevsky etc influences are obvious even here. A great book for someone to cut their teeth on McCarthy. Lester Ballard ranks with judge Holden and Anton Chigur in McCarthy’s most despicable characters

Historia
The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history. A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the “New Germany,” she has one affair after another....

Talented writer delivers mediocre story. Narrator top notch . Nothing dramatic occurs during the service of Ambassador Dodd but it gives insight into the persons that would make history

Historia
Like most Americans at the time, Plennie Wingo was hit hard by the effects of the Great Depression. When the bank foreclosed on his small restaurant in Abilene, he found himself suddenly penniless with nowhere left to turn. After months of struggling to feed his family on wages he earned digging ditches in the Texas sun, Plennie decided it was time to do something extraordinary - something to resurrect the spirit of adventure and optimism he felt he'd lost. He decided to walk around the world - backward.

Great Author but subject weak
Revisado: 04-04-22
I bought this based on the story the Author wrote on Gramma Gatewood. Well written, but Plennie Wingo was a uninspiring dipstick. His pursuit was silly, a misguided scam that never panned out. Gatewood found another life on trail, a life she deserved all along. Plennie got what he deserved as well. Nothing.

Historia
Colin, a newly divorced lecturer of critical theory, wants to spice up his life. He attempts to learn Russian, gives online dating a go, and even entertains the idea of becoming an alcoholic - but nothing sticks. So when two young women he’s never met before ask him to party, he ignores the red flags and climbs into their car. Almost as quickly as they pull away from the curb, Colin learns they’re not headed to a party: they’re headed to an abandoned building in Detroit to discuss the Frankfurt School of Critical Theory.

Historia
A young woman leaves a party with a wealthy US senator. The next morning her body is discovered in his car at the bottom of a pond. This is the damning true story of the death of campaign strategist Mary Jo Kopechne at Chappaquiddick and of the senator - a 37-year-old Senator Ted Kennedy - who left her trapped underwater while he returned to his hotel, slept, and made phone calls to associates. Leo Damore's 1988 national best seller, originally entitled Senatorial Privilege, almost didn't make it into print after its original publisher, Random House, judged it too explosive....

RIP Mary Jo
Revisado: 07-31-19
This book is not only about the misdeeds of Ted Kennedy, and the favors bestowed upon him by political allies, but also about simple local authorities that bungled the investigation. Chief Arena way in over his head, screwed it up from the start. Dr Mills, cared too little for the victim or her family to really do a proper examination or ask for an autopsy. Gargan and Markham come off as sane, but of course they are the sources for this book. Ted Kennedy got hammered then had sex with Mary Jo on Chappaquiddick around midnight away from the cottage. He got spooked when Huck Look spotted him and drove fast down dike road and went off the bridge. He left her to die, then went about like he was going to pretend she was alone in the car. He went to Edgartown to his hotel and woke up without a care in the world. Total scumbag.

Big fan of Jurek but prejudiced and insulting to Southerners
Revisado: 05-17-18
Great runner and great guy by all accounts, but this book depicts rural southerners as boogeymen was reminiscent of stereotypes given to blacks 100 years ago. These offenses usually take place in Jenny Jurek’s voice (who absurdly wondered in Virginia if locals had ever seen an Asian person before). Very insulting to anyone who has hiked the trail or lives near it and know the generosity of spirit and tangible goods that people in the south provide. Her imagination runs wild in the south with mythical tales and preconceived notions about southern folk. She felt unsafe-many women do-but attributing that to a specific group was off putting.
On the good side, Jurek’s struggles in New Hampshire and much of Maine make me feel better about my thruhike.
