About this listen

What happens when innocence is confronted by monstrous evil?

Nine-year-old Bruno knows nothing of the Final Solution and the Holocaust. He is oblivious to the appalling cruelties being inflicted on the people of Europe by his country. All he knows is that he has been moved from a comfortable home in Berlin to a house in a desolate area where there is nothing to do and no one to play with. Until he meets Shmuel, a boy who lives a strange parallel existence on the other side of the adjoining wire fence and who, like the other people there, wears a uniform of striped pyjamas.

Bruno's friendship with Shmuel will take him from innocence to revelation. And in exploring what he is unwittingly a part of, he will inevitably become subsumed by the terrible process.

A Heartbreaking Story

A great book that is well read! The story is about friendship no matter what their faith is - seen through the eyes of young boys during such a tragic part of human history !!!

It gets better with age.

The story has been more compelling each time I read the book and at an older age.

What an outstanding true story with mixed emotions throughout.

Having listened to a number of titles on this topic, this book was such a brilliant but extremely sad tale. The narrator was fantastic and I liked the layout of this title. I was gripped from the very first page and listened in 24 hours on and off. I just wanted to carry on listening. I liked the extra bit at the end of the book by the author. It really gave great insight in to it. I really hope nothing like this can ever happen again.

Sad, thoughtful and thought provoking.

I particularly liked the speaker adjusting his voice to the different characters and the repetitions of phrases throughout the book.

Great story & brilliantly read

Having read this book a while ago, I revisited it in audiobook for & was so impressed.

The book is as impressive as always but the narration is really top class, brilliantly read and bought to life.

Beautifully written and read

Listened in one sitting. Poignant story based on fact. Equally relevant for children and adults.

Amazing story!

Innocent and light but educational and heart touching. It was such a beautiful friendship narrated from the standpoint of Bruno. I listened to the full book in only 1 night. The story was well tailored that can fit with any audience. It was a phenomenal storyline that I have heard in a long time!
