About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Can a good company become a great one? If so, how?

After a five-year research project, Jim Collins concludes that good to great can and does happen. In this book, he uncovers the underlying variables that enable any type of organisation to make the leap from good to great while other organisations remain only good. Rigorously supported by evidence, his findings are surprising - at times even shocking - to the modern mind.

Good to Great achieves a rare distinction: a management book full of vital ideas that reads as well as a fast-paced novel. It is widely regarded as one of the most important business books ever written.

One of the best business books that I've read

One of the best business books that I've read so far.

What differentiated this book compared to other books on the subject is that while other business authors that I've read tended to formulate ideas, patterns and a narrative based on select anecdotal evidence (typically CEOs they're friends with), Jim Collins and his team set out to find common characteristics of companies going from good to great using scientific methods and based on well-defined criteria, THEN contacted key (ex)management of these companies to find out what were the key factors in their transformations.

The Level 5 leader, Hedgehog Concept and the Flywheel are all now well-known terms with successful technology companies and it was interesting to find out that all of them are formulated based on rigorous research.

The book contains multiple engaging stories from the select companies and the reading of the book (I listened on Audible) is very entertaining.

Highly recommended.

Loved it.

As an entrepreneur, this book has given me food for thought of where to take my company, and what not to do.

Excellent book.

An excellent brilliantly delivered and narrated. Lots of great concepts and learning to reflect on a apply in your own organisation. Sadly, I don't recall ever working for a Level 5 leader.

A Must Listen

Excellent book with fundamental insights, applicable today. It'll require a few listens to digest. Still applicable today if you follow the basic principles but adapt it to current needs.

Interesting points how you can suceed

I just love that the author's findings are that the most successful achievers are modest, wanting input from others, self critical, almost selfless for the bigger cause, disciplined and not scared to cut dead meat off.
Only small niggle is that the narrator's tone reminds me of a preacher in church. He is certainly passionate about his subject which is wonderful.
