About this listen

Was the biggest case of his career the worst mistake he ever made?

Ten years ago, DCI Jack Logan stopped the serial child-killer dubbed "Mister Whisper", earning himself a commendation, a drinking problem, and a broken marriage in the process.

Now, he spends his days working in Glasgow's Major Investigations Team, and his nights reliving the horrors of what he saw.

And what he did.

When another child disappears a hundred miles north in the Highlands, Jack is sent to lead the investigation and bring the boy home.

But as similarities between the two cases grow, could it be that Jack caught the wrong man all those years ago?

And, if so, is the real Mister Whisper about to claim his fourth victim?

A Litter of Bones is the explosive debut crime thriller novel from JD Kirk, an exciting new voice in Scottish crime fiction.

Brilliant unless you're a lover of cats!

A good measure of a crime thriller in today's saturated market is one's willingness to consider the sequel. I'm off to buy it asap. DCI Logan doesn't disappoint. A veteran officer, haunted by the worst case of his career. No self pitying, no long laments; a believable character who's honesty and self deprecating humour is also a breath of fresh air. Suspense at its best! Perfect for fans of Mark Billingham, Paul Finch, David Jackson, Val MacDermid to name a few. Brilliantly narrated!! You get the gist but avoid like the plague if you favour the feline variety. It's hard to listen to at times!

Murder, mystery with flashes of humour

Really enjoyed 99.5% of this book except the tortured cat. Says something about me can cope with people murdered but not animals! However the story was very engrossing couldn't wait for the end and didn't want it to finish. Not least the narrator was brilliant.

Very good book

I enjoyed this, I know the area and found the story engaging. As it's the first of a series, I am looking forward to listening to more, as the characters are developing. I agree with some other reviewers about the description regarding the cruelty to cats, as an avid cat lover myself, but it is fiction. I've purchased the next in the series. Excellent narration.

Excellent book

Really enjoyed this and have already started to read the next in the series. Such a well written book, with a great sense of place. Logan is interesting and likeable, but with a bit of an edge too.
The narrator is fantastic! One of the best in my opinion, whether it’s Shuggie Bain or Chris Brookmyre he’s reading.
Highly recommend this for those who enjoy a good crime story with engaging characters.

What a treat!

This is a really good book. I stayed awake for hours listening to it and didn’t guess whodunnit halfway through! The narration by Angus King really justifies being called a performance.

I loved the lack of cliche, nobody was hospitalised or burglarised. I also loved the lack of ‘terrible coffee’ forced down by detectives in almost every book written now. In this book people sometimes have an unremarkable cup of coffee or even tea, we are British after all.

J D Kirk has a new fan.

Superb Story.

My first encounter with Logan and JD Kirk's excellent narration.
I love this genre and I am a fan of Mark Dawson and Peter James each in turn creating a central key character who hooks you into the series of books.
Angus King's creation of Scottish suspense thriller simply brilliant.
This first novel made me laugh out loud on more than one occasion.
Young boy goes missing, so sad will Logan and his team ever find him?
I'm hooked, already got book 2 in my wish list.
Enjoy Logan and his team I did.

Brilliant

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were compelling and totally believable along with a very strong storyline which built to a crescendo of excitement, mild panic and utter relief. Lots of humour with some potty mouth dialogue which were so in keeping with the location and pure ferocity of what was to come and what was experienced.. Brilliantly narrated and super character definition throughout.. An easy 5* and onto to the rest of the series.
