Story
Aside from the fact that they are brothers, Peter and Ivan Koubek seem to have little in common. Peter is a Dublin lawyer in his thirties - successful, competent and apparently unassailable. But in the wake of their father's death, he's medicating himself to sleep and struggling to manage his relationships with two very different women. Ivan is a twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player. He has always seen himself as socially awkward, a loner, the antithesis of his glib elder brother.

I really enjoyed this book. Family relationships are my favourite genre and this at times was a hard listen as two brothers tried to find their way after their father’s death. The narration was excellent.

Really enjoyed the progress through the book, well written and the narrator really good. Didn’t like the ending at all, too abrupt, almost as if the author got a bit bored and went off for a coffee!

This book is really great, I read it when I was much younger and loved it. This version is brilliant, Robin Bailey, (who I am old enough to remember!) really brings it to life with his hugely versatile command of language and dialect. A good story and very well told, it is definitely 'of it's time' but the odd episodes of racism are accurate for the time in which is was written and sensitively told. I thoroughly recommend. I feel inspired to read more from Nevil Shute.

Story
She can’t recall what started her collection. Maybe it was in a fragment of conversation overheard as she cleaned a sink? Before long (as she dusted a sitting room or defrosted a fridge), she noticed people were telling her their stories. Perhaps they always had done, but now it is different, now the stories are reaching out to her and she gathers them to her. When Janice starts cleaning for Mrs B—a shrewd and tricksy woman in her 90s—she meets someone who wants to hear her story. But Janice is clear: she is the keeper of stories, she doesn’t have a story to tell.

I liked the book and the narrator too although she should keep away from trying accents they don’t work very well. Also the skipper of a lifeboat ‘coxswain’ is pronounced ‘coxen’ so that was a little annoying, but overall a good read!

I really enjoyed this book, great story and good narration. Only slightly annoyed by some sloppy editing, with occasional duplication including chapter 39 (Dean) which crops up twice! But otherwise I highly recommend
