Story
Ruth has returned to Edinburgh after many years of exile, left rootless by the end of her marriage and career and now the death of her father, from whom she had long been estranged. She is faced with the daunting task of clearing his house, believing he had removed all traces of her mother. Yet hidden away in a barely used top-floor room, she finds he had secretly kept a cupboard full of her possessions. Sifting through the ancient papers, Ruth discovers the diary and letters written by her ancestor from the 18th century, Thomas Erskine.

Another great story from Babara Erskine

I loved listening to this book, which accompanied me on my journey to and from work or out walking the dog on a rainy day. I was totally engrossed in it. Although it felt slightly different to Barbara's other works I felt it was equally just as good. I've read lots of her books and listened to a few too over the years.
The narrator made the story come to life for me and was fabulous at all the different character voices. For me personally, the narrator can make or break a good story but this one was spot on. I've already looked for more books read by Vivian Helbrun but disappointed to find only this one. I hope she does a few more.
Ok, so there were one or two frustrations with the Police not catching one of the villains earlier but it didn't detract from the storyline.
All in all a really good book. Thanks Babs, now onto the next one!

In The Hidden World of the Fox, ecologist Adele Brand shines a light on one of Britain’s most familiar yet enigmatic animals, showing us how the astonishing senses, intelligence and behaviour that allowed foxes to thrive in the ancient wildwood now help them survive in the concrete car parks and clattering railway lines of our cities and towns.

Story
Anna grew up in a house that was loving, even if her mum was ‘a little eccentric’. They knew to keep things clean, to stay quiet, and to look the other way when things started to get ‘a bit much for your mum’. It’s only when her mother reaches her 70s and Anna has a family of her own, that the cracks really start to appear. More manic. More irrational. More detached from the world. And when her father, the man who has calmed and cajoled her mother through her entire life is diagnosed with cancer, the whole world turns upside down.

There were a lot of familiar things in this book within my own life. I felt so much for the author and her relationship with her parents. I cried a couple of times while listening to it. Credit to the narrator who made the whole thing believable.

Listening to Chris's story of growing up, I was intrigued to know more about the person who persists so much to give nature a voice.
I found the pace of the book satisfying. The trials and tribulations of his growing up days led me to feel normal. The guy has taken an emotional battering and one literally throughout school life for being different. We all feel at some point that we don't quite fit in (don't we) but the book showed that some have to deal with much more crap than others. I really enjoyed it and felt a lump in my throat.

Story
Tom Watson began to put on weight in his early 20s, having developed an appetite for fast food and cheap beer while studying at the University of Hull. As time progressed - and his penchant for anything sweet, fatty or fizzy persisted - he found himself adjusting his belt, loosening his collar and upsizing his wardrobe to XXL. He continued to pile on the pounds when he entered the world of politics as MP for West Bromwich East (despite short-lived flirtations with fad diets and fitness classes). By December 2014, his bathroom scales had tipped to 22 stone.

Encouraging read
Reviewed: 13-01-20
Tom has done remarkably well losing 8 stone and his book is inspiring. It has encouraged me to start my own weight loss program, so for that it deserves 5 stars. If there is any slight criticism, I would have like a bit more information on his weight loss progress and how he overcame the daily temptations of food. A bit more information on the individual meal times would have been useful but maybe that will come in a further book.
I did enjoy the book and got the impression that Tom is a thoroughly decent bloke supported by his family. I wish him well in his future endeavours and hope that he gets back into politics because the world needs people like Tom to make a difference!

This book gives you the lowdown on 1066 in a concise, non waffling way. It might not suit everyone but it is an hour well spent. As a person who loves listening to documentaries I now feel I can put the events of this eventful year into chronological order, which may not have happened if I'd read a more detailed analysis. It has paved the way for me to delve into further reading of this period.
