Story
In this rich and memorable evocation of the fictional South Riding of Yorkshire are the lives, loves and sorrows of the central characters. There is Sarah Burton, fiery young headmistress; Robert Carne of Maythorpe Hall, a councillor tormented by his own disastrous marriage; Jo Astell, a socialist fighting poverty and his own illness; and Mrs Beddows, the first woman Alderman of the district (like Winifred's own mother).

I really enjoyed this book, a portrait of life in the 30s. Characters who held your interest. I had feared it might be a bit dated, bur no. First class narration.

I would not recommend this book to anyone who didn't have an interest in or knowledge of sailing. Lots of technical information and long descriptions of sandbanks and ports. I did finish it but it was hard going.

Story
This tale, published in 1828, is based on The Story of an Apparition, a ghost story published in Blackwood's 10 years earlier by an author identified only as A. B. Sir Walter Scott took that rather flimsy story and turned into a masterful tale of the supernatural.

I don't usually read ghost stories but was recommended to read this one as part of a course I am doing. I enjoyed the descriptions of the castle and the chamber .
The narrator was American but I didn't find that a problem and I thought the speed of narration was fine. Pity more Walter Scott stories aren't available on Audible.

The Wow O’ Rivven is a great example of George McDonald's wonderful storytelling. Rivven is Ruthven, Aberdeenshire, and The "Wow o Rivven" refers to the local church bell. The hero of the story is the old "fool", also known as "colonel" who is buried near to the old bell.

This is the first writing of George Macdonald I have read and I plan to read more. I know he is very well regarded in America but is less well appreciated in his home town of Huntly which is also my home.

When the skeleton of a young cavalier was found by William Rashleigh at Daphne du Maurier's beloved mansion, Menabilly, she once again found inspiration in her surroundings. Putting pen to paper, Daphne created The King's General, a historical tale which takes place during the English Civil War and introduces one of du Maurier's greatest heroines: Honor Harris. Honor is a beautiful, brave and kind protagonist, a true embodiment of the name by which she goes.

An excellent story read well by Juliet Stevenson. If you enjoyed this try The Proud Servant by Margaret Irwin, the story of James Graham Marquis of Montrose who lead the Royalist troops in Scotland, a true hero.

The most acclaimed Scottish novel of all time, Sunset Song is a powerful portrait of a land and people in turmoil, seen through the life and struggles of its heroine, Chris Guthrie. In the years up to and beyond the First World War, Chris' resilience, like the land itself, endures despite everything and is portrayed with a lyrical intensity that echoes through the years and still resonates today.

I have always loved this book but the excellence of the narration takes it to a different level. A natural Doric speaker myself I found Eileen McCallum faultless , I hope there is a plan for her to read more Lewis Grassic Gibbon books.
I would recommend this book to anyone who hadn't tried an audiobook before.

Story
Window in Thrums - the story of the "untrue son" - is about the fictional village of Thrums. The story and setting are widely acknowledged to be modelled on Barrie's home town of Kirriemuir. It was one of his earlier works which, along with Auld Licht Idylls, also published in 1889. The novel contains many memorable sketches and illuminations of Scottish life at the time, and it paved the way for the rest of Barrie's great career.
