Story
The festival was intended as a getaway from UCLA for Gary, his girlfriend, Joan, and their friends. But soon after they arrive, Joan vanishes. Calls to her parents’ home yield only dead air. Her school records are gone. And there’s no evidence that Joan, or even her roommate, ever existed. Most disturbing of all is what they do find. Among Joan’s belongings is a prayer written on a small scroll. It’s a safeguard — and a warning — from something called The Outsiders. For Gary and his friends, it’s the only clue.

An unusual story about kidnapping by a cult of a former member. More absorbing than it might sound and worth listening to. Not one of Bentley Little's best but still quite good.

Mediocre at best
Reviewed: 14-03-24
Having read and listened to a great many book by Dean Koontz this was by far the most disappointing. Mediocre at best. Almost as if knocked out to meet a publishing commitment lacking the depth, twists and turns that I have experienced in other more worthy titles.

If I had paid to listen to this story I would have returned it about a quarter way through. The occult based storyline was poor and the narrator particularly disappointing. A good narrator can make all the difference and this one did for all the wrong reasons. As it was, I skipped half way through to listen to the last 45 minutes. and I don't think I missed much.

A story line with promise
Reviewed: 15-01-24
This story line had great potential and got on with delivering at pace without going off at tangents to pad it out. that said it wasn't the best haunted house story I've read. in fact disappointing. A bit like a watered down Amityville horror.

Story
For the town of Randall, Arizona, the terror starts quietly, oddly - a senile woman in her 80s becomes pregnant. Then the town's beloved minister mysteriously disappears, leaving his church and home hideously defiled by blasphemous obscenities scrawled in blood. Farmers going out to their fields in the morning find their herds of goats slaughtered. Then, as the terror intensifies, the farmers themselves are massacred. The town begins to smell of death, and the trust which has bound neighbors to one another turns to ashes.

Another good story from Bentley Little, with many parallels with others he has written. Quite a few similarities to The Town. Well narrated by David Stifel. Nothing more to add despite being prompted to add more text to satisfy the review requirements.

An interesting story about life after death. A little too much about this experience as imagined by the writer and not enough dedicated to the love story that bonds it together. A promising book just fizzled out into nonsense.

I only decided to give this a try because it was a free Audible download by Joe Hill that had good reviews. What a mistake. I hated all the theatrics and it felt like I was listening to a TV programme but without the pictures. Not surprising when I discovered this was written for just that purpose. I pretty much hated the story and whole presentation right from the off but decided to give it a try. Three hours is more than enough. For me a complete waste of time. Deleted. No wonder it was a free download.
