Good Dark Fantasy

This was a really fun dark fantasy novel. Plenty of action and great storytelling. Audio was done really well with plenty of scope and variation for the myriad of characters. I look forward to book 2.

Story
When British hat manufacturer Christopher Brooke is arrested under Regulation 18B in June 1940, a slow process of personal disintegration begins, affecting his family irreversibly. Irish farm girl, Mary Byrne, arrives in England in July 1940 to work as housekeeper for Cynthia Brooke and her three children, bonding with the family. When Mary is shockingly expelled from the house upon Christopher's release from internment in 1943, her narration continues through the mouth of 15-month-old Katie, conceived on a prison leave.

Dark. Brooding. Excellent.
Reviewed: 13-05-21
I thoroughly enjoyed this. It's well researched and regales us with a part of history from the Second World War within Britain that I was not aware of (namely, fascist sympathisers). The writing was dark and brooding, but there were plenty of touching moments, and funny moments, to not make it overly depressing. Told from multiple POV's, and spanning many years, Hare has really accomplished something quite unique.
I'm normally quite hesitant to listen to the audio of a book that is narrated by its author, but Hare has done a really good job with this and has a lovely, soothing voice.

Funny Short Story

Fun short story set in the Rivers of London series. No spoilers given to any of the books in the series so can be read as a standalone.
Found this rather funny, but then as a librarian I love a story with library puns.

It is said that, in this library, all the secrets of creation are stored here. Everybody that arrives has no memories, no names, and no escape. Together, they must find out why they are here, what sent them, and why they all feel like they are being watched. A plan is formed. Escape from the library at all costs. Until a new visitor enters. A visitor who, like the others, has no name. No memories. But, he is a bit different than the others. If the library contains the secrets of all creation, maybe there is no need for escape. Maybe a new plan needs to be formed....

Not sure how to categorise this short story, it has elements of gothic horror but also fantasy and mystery.
This was a good short story, compelling plotline and rather weird, which is just what I enjoy.
Narration was done really well, Warren has a lovely melodic voice.

A fun take on the fantasy genre
Reviewed: 11-02-21
I thoroughly enjoyed this fantasy book. Well written and good characterisations and world-building, with plenty of mythology and action sprinkled in. Garafalo is most certainly a name in fantasy literature to keep an eye on.
The narration was done well and Smith does a good job at conveying the many different characters, but some of the accents felt a little off with regards to this style of story.

Presented is a two-volume collection of Wells' most celebrated classics of science-fiction and horror: The Time Machine and The Island of Doctor Moreau. This audio-enhanced version - with sound effects and musical soundtrack - combines Wells' groundbreaking exploration of time travel with his "youthful blasphemy" tale of animal and human hybrids.

These were great. I've been meaning to read The Time Machine for many a year now and always got sidetracked so to find the audio was a great find for me. Having the Island of Doctor Moreau on it was purely bonus.
I love old sci-fi, and although these haven't dated that well, they are still excellent reads. Highly recommend.

When the hunt for a mysterious enemy leads Berengar back to Dún Aulin, an old friend’s request thrusts him headfirst into danger. In the Ceremony of the Cursed Blade, the sword used by the Lord of Shadows in his conquest of Fál will change possession, and it’s up to Berengar to keep the blade from falling into the wrong hands.

For Fans of Skyrim...
Reviewed: 22-06-20
I have thoroughly enjoyed this trilogy from Romines. Fun fantasy/grimdark series and action packed. Characters and world building are explored and enriched throughout all three books and there is plenty of scope to add more books within this world.
I had requested this, the third book, to listen to as it looked like it could be read as a standalone, and Romines very kindly gave this and the previous two with absolutely no prompting, which is incredibly generous of him.
I do think this could be read as a standalone but it reads better as part of the series, and in order. Although action packed, previous adventures and character observations/progessions aren't reiterated, so reading as a standalone could be frustrating for a new reader.
Reading these I have really wanted to replay Skyrim, but alas I cannot as the xbox is at my partners and covid lockdown means I haven't seen him or the xbox for over 3 months now.

Being a warden is tough work at the best of times. Keeping the tenuous peace between the five kingdoms of Fál is a difficult business, especially in a land of monsters and magic. Esben Berengar, the realm’s most feared warden, relies on his wits and his axe to deal with unscrupulous rulers, bloodthirsty outlaws, and the occasional witch. When the king of Munster is murdered, Berengar is called upon to investigate. Many had cause to want the king dead, and treachery lurks behind every corner.

The job sounded simple enough. Rid the village of an ogre and rescue the girl. In return, the local lord would overlook that ugly business in the church. It was nothing he hadn’t dealt with before. That was before he heard the howls coming from the Bog of Móin Alúin. Before he crossed paths with the headless rider. Before he woke to find the witch’s crooked fingers on his face. Now, Berengar must unravel the labyrinth of secrets and lies surrounding the village before a deadly curse claims his life, all while a darker evil looms in the shadows....

Thoroughly enjoyable grimdark fantasy novel. I requested the third book to listen to via Audioboom as it looked like it could be read as a standalone, and Romines very kindly gave me all three books, which is pretty awesome of him.
Excellent start to the series. It's action packed from the beginning and generally fun to read. Have already recommended to one friend so hopefully they will also enjoy it. Only criticism I have is there wasn't too much backstory given, so I'm hoping this is explored more in the second book.

This is a childhood favourite of mine, so to find the audiobook was a blessing having never read it in that format.
Alice Larkin is wonderful in the audio of this. Her voice really suits the style of the book and brings the characters to life. Will be looking out for more of her narrations.
