This epic novel by master writer James Clavell, loosely based on the Namamugi Incident and Anglo-Satsuma War that took place in the late 1800s, is a richly researched, panoramic view of Japan’s budding relationship with the Western powers, its sweeping societal changes, and the political upheaval that followed.

Not as engaging as Shogun or Noble House which are stunning books, characters don’t seem to develop enough. Difficult to follow the many characters and as for Angelique, I have to agree with other reviewers, she’s very irritating! Narration I thought was first class. It’s a long book and takes some commitment to complete. Ending is somewhat sudden and disappointing, I would have loved to know what happened next!

Story
A series of apparently random murders draws amiable, old-school Detective Mick Matlock into a world of sex, politics, reality TV and a bewildering kaleidoscope of opposing identity groups. Lost in a blizzard of hashtags, his already complex investigation is further impeded by the fact that he simply doesn’t ‘get’ a single thing about anything anymore. Meanwhile, each day another public figure confesses to having ‘misspoken’ and prostrates themselves before the judgment of Twitter. Begging for forgiveness, assuring the public 'that is not who I am'.

Ben Elton has simply nailed it! His precision in identifying, deconstructing and exposing the worst and best of the unstoppable trend of emerging identity politics makes, surprisingly, a very entertaining listen. Perfectly in tune with the times with characters, based on whom you will have no trouble identifying, which cynically manipulate an upcoming referendum creating something akin to hysteria amongst those easily offended and swayed. I loved it!

Huge Disappointment
Reviewed: 28-05-19
I should have taken stock of the reviews which said this book was way too long, it is. Would benefit from a deep editing to take out much of the over description. Action scenes were sometimes way over stretched whilst the demise of some significant characters almost glossed over. Shame, book had good promise but alas doesn’t deliver for me.

This is the second time I’ve listened this book and loved it just as much as the first time. I’m a big time travel fan and this must be my favourite. It’s a beautiful story interlaced with some dark plot lines which really make you feel for the characters. The science is believable thanks to the depth of research whilst the narration is simply fantastic. Highly recommended on every level. I was so sad it finished and would love there to be a follow on book.

In his major new work, Michael Palin - former Monty Python stalwart and much-loved television globe-trotter - brings to life the world and voyages of HMS Erebus, from its construction in the naval dockyards of Pembroke, to the part it played in Ross’s Antarctic expedition of 1839-43, to its abandonment during Franklin’s ill-fated Arctic expedition, and to its final rediscovery on the seabed in Queen Maud Gulf in 2014.

Having read Terror, by Dan Simmons, and watched the Ridley Scott mini series, I was drawn to this book to learn more about the life of the Flagship Erebus and her sister ship Terror as well as the lives and times of the amazing men who sailed with them, I was not disappointed. Well researched and written in an engaging style, Michael Palin has nailed it. Great narration gives a real sense of the challenges that were faced by the seamen and the main real life characters of Sir John Franklin, Capt Crozier et al. Highly recommended as a read in its own right and a must if you want to find out more about this epic ship and the mystery surrounding her disappearance in the Arctic.

Very slow dull book
Reviewed: 15-01-19
I have never written a poor review previously however, this book was so slow and long and never got interesting until very near the end. Maybe I just didn’t get it but I found the lead character so self absorbed with her own thoughts that it became predictable and unfortunately, boring. I persevered hoping it would get better but there simply wasn’t any reveal worth talking about.

Takes a little while to get going but you won’t be disappointed. I particularly liked the nostalgic references to 1986!
As time travel novels go I think this is amongst the best and I’ve read many. Must admit I didn’t see the twist at the end coming and am now looking forward to the conclusion in book 2, I hope it’s as good as the first.

Story
The Tattooist of Auschwitz is based on the true story of Lale and Gita Sokolov, two Slovakian Jews who survived Auschwitz and eventually made their home in Australia. In that terrible place, Lale was given the job of tattooing the prisoners marked for survival - literally scratching numbers into his fellow victims' arms in indelible ink to create what would become one of the most potent symbols of the Holocaust.

I listened to this book in one sitting !
The story had me gripped from the beginning with its graphic description of the horror of life in Auschwitz and the impossibility that humanity can still be found there. I cried a number of times but was ultimately uplifted by this incredible true story of love and survival against all odds. Highly recommended 🙂
