Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Superb Narration

Great story, wonderful characters. I think I liked it even better than The Martian. I don't read much sci-fi at all, but I would read anything by Andy Weir. So glad I went for the audiobook - the performance was exceptional, really brought to life, it really enhanced the story and characters.

Story
Sprawling across a quarter of the world's land mass and claiming nearly 500 colonial subjects, Britain's empire was the largest empire in human history. For many, it epitomised our nation's cultural superiority, but what legacy have we delivered to the world? Spanning more than 200 years of history, Caroline Elkins reveals evolutionary and racialised doctrines that espoused an unrelenting deployment of violence to secure and preserve British imperial interests.

Well researched, not well read, quite a slog.

First of all, why is a book written by a woman narrated by a man? When men doninate academic fields, this seems like an effort to minimise womens' work further.
I found the narration grating and the tone a bit too American entertainment / presenter voice for the gravity of the topic.
But it is incredibly well researched and a much needed expose of the horrors of the Empire. As such it is not an easy read and I found I had to keep listening to other things for a while to break it up. It is very long but maybe that was necessary to provide a comprehensive critique. It was a hard slog, but worth it. I learned a lot and had my opinions on the Empire utterly vindicated. I have a much greater understanding of the Palestine-Israel conflict too.

Story
What does it mean to be lonely? How do we live, if we're not intimately engaged with another human being? How do we connect with other people? When Olivia Laing moved to New York City in her mid-30s, she found herself inhabiting loneliness on a daily basis. Fascinated by the experience, she began to explore the lonely city by way of art. Humane, provocative and deeply moving, The Lonely City is about the spaces between people and the things that draw them together, about sexuality, mortality and the magical possibilities of art.

A brilliant blend of memoir, psychology, philosophy, centred around the fascinating lives and works of several artists. Really interesting. I think the only thing the audiobook may lack compared to the book is pictures of the art discussed, but I will definitely listen again and look these up.

Story
What’s in a label? Are we the product of our upbringing or do we have a natural propensity towards good or evil? The eternal question of nature vs nurture is at the centre of Dr Diane Buckley’s world. A talented freelance forensic psychologist who has never quite found the key to engaging with people on a casual level, she is drafted in to examine a grisly murder – a body found in a children’s playground.

Annoying errors if you know the area...
Reviewed: 14-06-18
Some glaring errors about the North East. Grey Monument?! And Tyne and Wear Civic Centre? Surely it would be very easy to ascertain that Sunderland and Newcastle have separate civic centres? Also, forensic psychology is a very competitive field, nobody would just fall into an assistant psychology job in forensics. Competition is fierce. Good story, but not thoroughly researched.
