really interesting background, that not only tells the story of Doctor Who, but also puts it into the historical context of what else is going on in 1963 (Kennedy assination, Profuno scandal etc), what was on the other networks and so on. great storytelling and research.

highly recommended

This is an amazing collection. It has edited extracts from Benn's own recordings made at the end of the day when he was in politics, and then his Free at Last diary, and then some exclusive BBC radio programmes. I was not specially a fan of Benn, but am interested in the period and this collection really throws a light on that, but I did get to know Benn much better through this, and came to like him and admire his commitment to Parliament and Democracy. Well worth a listen

why oh why do we not have Judi's own interviews. it is so weird to have Barbara Jefford pretending to be Judi. it does not work. total failure. I can't bear to listen. let's please have the original interviews which I imagine are brilliant.

I originally had all these on CDs, now all out from BBC and on Audible at a great price. listening to them all again, they are fantastic, I prefer the dramatised versions to one that at one actor reading, and the BBC radio versions make the SH stories completely alive, as if you are listening in on them. Totally recommended.

these are brilliant plays superbly produced but Audible it is maddening on an anthology that there are no titles chapter headings text or on the recording which makes it really hard almost impossible to navigate

this is a classic story. but this version is spoilt by the staccato treatment of the reader. I have found an alternative reading by Samuel West which for me is far superior but it's not on Audible.

If you want a reason to NEVER vote Conservative, this is it.

Swire artfully and maliciously documents her time during the Cameron/May and finally the early days of the Johnson Conservative governments. What we find is that they are vulgar, self-seeking, totally out of touch with real people, seeing politics as a game rather than something to work hard at to help everyone get a better life through opportunities and support.

The contempt at which the local members of Swire's constituency party are held, and depicted with 'funny' west country 'yokel' accents is despicable.

Yet, the horror of it, makes it somehow compulsive,

Terrific, easy to follow history of coal mining

Very well written, this is an easy to follow history of coal mining in the UK. Paxman is expansive in his telling of the effects of coal, and forthright (as you would expect) in calling out some of the calamities, betrayals and the sheer challenge of being a miner. Some of his descriptions of how it was down the pit are chilling.

However, Paxman is not a great reader, he is a great broadcaster and interviewer, but as a reader it sounds like he is announcing. I think an trained actor would have been a better choice.
