Story
Summer 1914. A world on the brink of catastrophe. In London, 26-year-old Venetia Stanley – aristocratic, clever, bored, reckless – is having a love affair with the Prime Minister, H. H. Asquith, a man more than twice her age. He writes to her obsessively, sharing the most sensitive matters of state. As Asquith reluctantly leads the country into war with Germany, a young intelligence officer is assigned to investigate a leak of top secret documents – and suddenly what was a sexual intrigue becomes a matter of national security that will alter the course of political history.

The politics of Britain and Germany & WW1
Reviewed: 26-09-24
Having long been intersted in WW1, I was glad to read of the political background to Britain"s response to the prospect of war with Germany.
Robert Harris combines the facts and prsonalities involved into a fascinating insight to the events of the time. PM Askew, Kitchener, Lloyd George and Churchill together with the socialites of the time are all dealt with and illuminate these dark times.
Beautifully written, this is a compelling account of historical and social magnitude.

Story
1992. Eight respectable, upstanding people have been found dead across the US. These deaths look like accidents and don"t appear to be connected. Until one body - the victim of a fatal fall from a hospital window - generates some unexpected attention. That attention comes from the Secretary of Defence, who promptly calls for an inter-agency task force to investigate. Jack Reacher is assigned as the Army"s representative. Reacher may be an exceptional soldier, but sweeping other people"s secrets under the carpet isn"t part of his skill set.

I did not know what to expect of "Geneva". Three narrators / actors tell the story from three different characters.
A very intriguing and relevant story for these days of dementia headlines.
I thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns in this book.

Written to take advantage of the brief window between the end of lockdown and Jimmy getting cancelled for saying something unforgivable to Lorraine Kelly, this book is as timely as it is unnecessary. Because you might be interested in Jimmy"s life but he"s damn sure you"re a lot more interested in your own, Before & Laughter is about both of you. But mainly him.

Jim narrates his autobiography (part the first). A tale of much mirth and jolliness. Plenty of "laugh out loud" stories and anecdotes.
The book covers his years through childhood school and early employment. A career in music diverts him to London in search of fame and fortune.
I am looking forward to Me Moir part the second.

Ramble Book is about parenthood, boarding-school trauma, arguing with your partner, bad parties, confrontations on trains, friendship, wanting to fit in, growing up in the "80s, dead dads, teenage sexual anxiety, failed artistic endeavours, being a David Bowie fan and how everything you read, watch and listen to as a child forms a part of the adult you become. It’s also an audiobook about the joys of going off topic and letting your mind wander. And it’s about a short, hairy, frequently confused man called Adam Buxton.
